Scary Movies That Actually Are Scary

Seen any lately?
I really want to watch a film that genuinely scares me, but I'm always really disappointed.

I'd love it if people could recommend genuinely scary films to me, when I do a google search, it generally just pulls up The Exorcist, which while being a classic, isn't particularly scary.

I thought The Strangers, and The Exorcism of Emily Rose were a bit jumpy, but not really scary.

Any suggestions?

I think all of the Paranormal Activities are good for a few jumps, I personally like the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Descent is good too. I'm not easily scared, but a few of my friends have said Insidious is scary (I don't agree personally). This is the best list me and my boyfriend can come up with though 🙂

I saw Insidious a few weeks ago and the beginning of the movie really scared me, but then the story gets way too silly to be scary, so I can't fully recommend it.

It's difficult with scary movies, cos there aren't that many. I do recommend the french film Martyrs. it's not great but it freaked me out!

The problem with "scary" is that people get scared by different things. I'm tense in regular life and if I watch a movie, at least alone, when you're always waiting for the "jump" scene (no matter what kind of movie it is) it goes into overload. So even if they aren't scary as such they just don't suit me. I watched the first Paranormal activity at the theater and I thought it was more funny/silly than scary.

I think that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) and The Evil Dead (1981) are pretty scary, but there's one important rule you should stick to:

Watch them in the dark! 😉

I haven't seen any movies recently that really scared me. I saw the first Paranormal Activity and didn't think it was scary until towards the end. It's a film that kinda just crept up on me and gradually got more creepy. I never saw the 2nd or 3rd but I heard they were just as creepy if not more. I also heard Insidious was scary but I'm too chicken to bring myself to watch it alone :scared01: and nobody I know really likes scary movies and will watch it with me.

As [MENTION=8013]Washburne[/MENTION] said everybody is scared of different things though. I've never been scared of monsters or serial killers. The only thing that bugs me out (and it really bugs me out) is supernatural ghost type stuff. Watching Poltergeist as a child scarred me :scared20: In that respect I'd have to agree with [MENTION=11500]drizzlydaze[/MENTION] that Japanese and Korean horror films are about as scary as they get. I remember being petrified after seeing The Ring, had trouble sleeping for weeks. But again, tons of people said they didn't think that movie was scary at all. :idunno:

There was a movie, but I don't remember its title or cast or anything, not even the plot. It was a long time ago. I just remember a scene where there seemed to be a skeleton, and then it suddenly came to life and charged at the girl. That scared me to death.

Well I tend not to get really scared by scary movies but IT was creepy to me as a child. I hate clowns.

Seven with Brad Pitt is creepy it isn't really horror but stuff that can happen in real life is creepier to me than horror per say.

Nothing here is very scary, but then I've been watching Horror flicks since I was five, so I'm a little jaded. 😛

Insidious is really creepy. James Wan and Liegh Whannell are freaking geniuses. Dead Silence isn't bad either. Not as creepy though.

The Blair Witch Project and Ringu were films that I found pretty scary...a lot of modern "horror" films are just gross-fests but those two worked their way into my psyche...

Instead of scary, you see bloody, slimy, disgusting, and downright ridiculous human behavior in what should be stressful situations, but scary requires more than fake blood, pig guts, and computer graphics.

I'm easily scared by horror films, even the rubbish ones. I watched IT when I was a child and it scared me to death, I've been afraid of clowns ever since!! I was terrified by Paranormal Activity 1 (I've not watched the rest) and from what I saw of Insidious (half of it was watched behind a pillow) I was scared of that too.

A friend of mine says The Shinning is one of the scariest films she's ever watched. I know its a classic and not one of the new ones but she loves horror films and reading Steven King novels so her opinion is pretty good. I've never watched it 🙂

The only recent scary movie i thought was really scary was Paranormal Activity 1, & the mist, a little ( even though I thought the book was much creepier). can't think of many others. The ones that really creeped me out are way older: IT, The shining, Texas chain saw massacre
