Schools in the UK Are Removing Analog Clocks Because Students Can’t Tell Time

A head-teachers’ union in the UK recently reported that youths have become so accustomed to using digital devices that they are having trouble correctly reading time on analog clocks, forcing schools to replace them.

According to Malcolm Trobe, deputy general secretary at the Association of School and College Leaders, children and young teens aren’t as good at reading an old-fashioned clock as previous ones. Because phones, tablets and computers play such a huge role in their lives, they are constantly exposed to time in digital format, so seeing the time displayed in analog format in examination halls can be a cause of unnecessary stress for children. For this reason, some schools are removing analog clocks and replacing them with digital ones.
 
IMO that is because the schools do not spend enough time teaching the kids. My daughter has had 2 yes 2 lessons. It is disgusting. She is so nervous about doing it and has no confidence built up by the school. Abbs has a analog clock in her bedroom and I always get her to use it but because they don't reenforce it at school it is hard work sometimes.

it Must be true, we seem to be getting dumber, all the time.
 
Wow. I used to teach 4-6 year old children with developemental disabilities how to read the time while on horse back. It was not a hard skill for them to master - especially playing "whats the time Mr wolf". Do they not play games like that in schools anymore? Looks like traditional clocks will be lost to the tech generation. I wonder what else will be. And thankful these changes wont reach me in my lifetime!

That's sad. It's not a very hard thing to teach.

I wonder what they are teaching in place of this...it seems like more and more is taken out of curriculum (like cursive) but not much is added.
 
Did they actually remove them, or did someone merely bring up the idea of replacing them which has not been pursued in any way but the competitive news agencies needed a new clickbait title?

And would anyone actively involved in such a change (or even suggesting it) be connected by friendship or business to someone who "conveniently" has the digital clocks ready for the taxpayers to purchase for the schools?

I'm twenty seven and can't read analog clocks (read time) or do cursive. I graduated but have spotty education back round and plan on learning this year heres hoping.
 
I can understand dropping cursive, if you have messy handwriting and write in cursive it's hard to read, but I still do it anyway!
 
Oh no, imagine the problems faced if you were a dyslexic writer and had a cursive bad spelling problem that also activated in speech, Oh soddin bugger bollocks and shagging knickers I'm a friggin nancy boy.

PS did you know that there is a town in northern France that's name is Nancy? Yea Gods, what could be worse, Spike is a frog! And he wants to know the time difference for frogs and poms.

This story is another "sign of the times/much ado about nothing" sort of thing. Yes it blows my mind, but at the same time is it going to be big deal or effect them seriously later in life? No.
 
Oh hello, I heard about this! I thought it was a joke. It's not surprising though. I've noticed a lot of extremely bad handwriting from the younger generation (no offence, monkey hands) and it makes sense considering schoolwork is done on computers now. The only time in school I ever used a computer was in Computing Standard Grade, where we learned how to program in BASIC. There was a single computer in the room that was connected to the magical tubes of the internet that we sometimes got to gather around for demonstrations by the teacher.

We also had handwriting lessons in our first year of high school to prepare for the endless handwritten essays and homework. Now I barely write anything. Although when I do I get compliments on my handwriting, an indicator of a totally different time. Part of the last generation to grow up in analogue.

Side note - I miss analogue when it comes to equipment, or broken equipment, as I used an analogue amplifier for years that I could fix and twiddle with it until it worked again. Digital is all one's and zero's, so it's either working or not and no workaround. Damn you, digital electronics, you will be the downfall of us all.
 
If a huge solar flare were to fry many of our sats and many electronic devices on Earth (as could happen) in say 20 years or so, our first world countries are going to be in BIG trouble! 😱

But hey, who cares about that when you've got gadgets to sell today.

Yep! I heard dr karl on about it the other week. Royally frakked if it happens.
I was thinking about this thread last night. I put a clock in my room a few months back and the ticking sent me bonkers after so long without it! The rabbits seem to like it in their room though. Ticking clocks calm lots of baby animals (sounds like heartbeat) and I wonder what mummas will use instead for the babies rooms. Was a bargain at the op shop.
