All I know about Scientology I learned from South Park.

Ohh and I bought that season of South Park last night.

Back on topic, I've been reading more about it and to be fair the unbiased stuff sounds OK (I don't mean the ridiculous stuff) but that doesn't change the fact how it started and how bizarre it is - its like something out of Galaxy Quest!

I'm so very, very glad that Mr Cruise has finally gotten to show the world that there is so much more depth to his character than that kid sliding across the floor in his jockey shorts in "Risky Business." I bet all of the skeptics will finally shut up now!
 
WHY THE HELL DID I WATCH THAT SECOND VIDEO YOU POSTED?! That McPherson and Boiling Bath Tub Guy thing was no joke. I had no idea so many bad things were linked to scientology. Now I'm gonna be stuck with serious thoughts all day.
 
When I was a teenager and starting on a pagan journey that would have frightened rather a few parents, my dad said: "Do anything you want, except take your brother and sister with you and join the scientology church."

I haven't watched the videos you posted, E.B., I'll give them a look when my boys are in bed. But generally the scientologists scare. The way they pray on people who are in a rough patch (or are just plainly weak) is deeply unethical.
 
For really funny insights in Scientology, you might wanna have a talk with some people who left, because they couldn't identify with the goals and ideas behind it. And now have to live under false names.

Was part of a few protests outside a Scientology building ages ago. Deeply, deeply unpleasant organisation. They kept trying to photo our faces all the damn time too.

It's funny that poor old Beck always gets a mention as their sole redeeming representative though. Always Beck, and only Beck.
 
Scientology is no more absurd than any other religion. And just like other religions they are easy to attack. The reality is, its all just the way you frame it. Tweak a word here, a sentence there, you could substitute lots of large organisations in an attack piece. Similarly in defense, everything is all about framing.
 
I haven't really looked into this much, to be honest. From what I have read/heard etc, I do find it all a bit strange. And some of the videos of Tom Cruise talking about it - I really did find them disturbing. He just didn't appear to have a clue what he was saying and none of it made sense.

I do try and defend it where I think it should be, when people misunderstand something about. My example of this was all the hoohah about Katie Holmes giving birth when it was reported she wasn't ALLOWED to scream. Most of friends just figured they were evil but I explained that they discourage screaming so that a baby isn't born into something negative - which I do kind of get.

However, I did watch the Panaroma documentary on Scientology and I found some of the things they did to people deeply disturbing and upsetting.

EB - I totally want to hear about it after you've been. Unless they like make you swear secrecy or something!
 
I promised myself I would stay out of this thread but ohh well, I havn't watched the second video but im guessing I already know what is said.

Ive done a fair bit or research on scientology and what Tom Cruise is babbelling on about is half to do with some of the crazy theories scientologists believe, and half just him being a crazy wacko actor. Even if I were to believe in this religion, im sorry, but there is clearly something wrong with him in that video. I could quote individual things (him being an authority, running from suppressive persons, etc, take your pick) but it would be a pretty lame argument.

To take this thread on an even more religious theme...

I do agree with Schillaci that any religion can be 'framed' to be whatever the opponent wants. Its a process of defining the religion as a straw man, and then knocking said argument out the park. Its a pathetic tactic which is used to argue against most religions, especially in the media. Ill point to the fact that never, in my 23 years have I seen a Christian trained in apologetics defend their faith on any national media outlet. Instead, youth pastors, fundy wackos, and the never ceasing hypocritcal Catholic church are used to defend the faith of a religion accepted by more than 2 billion people. This doesnt apply to just the Christian faith but (I presume) is a tactic used by many in their arguments against religion.

My point is that to have an open mind on this subject, one has to actually research these things for themselves and discern a viewpoint based on their own understanding, not whatever the media feels fit to expose you to. The UK is brilliant in exposing people in this mindset, since the media so eloquently supports their belief and seems to leave half the people I meet in a state of, "I dunno, what does it matter?". In the US, the opposite is true, the media seems to support a sense of apathy toward belief in God, "yea, I believe, so?". Im generalising of course, but living in both countries has allowed me to see things a little differently...exposing yourself to different cultures is a pretty easy way to make you identify your own beliefs...


Hows that for a rant, off topic owns me.
