Scientology Vs South Park

Has anyone else been following this war South Park is having with Scientology? Isn't it fascinating? :aah:

In case you missed it, it goes something like this... You know how South Park likes to bash...well...everything. I guess they were going through their list of religions that needed bashing and they said, "Hey, wait a minute. Back up. What about Scientology. We haven't hit them yet."

So out comes this episode, which tears a strip off Scientology, Tom Cruise, John Travolta, R. Kelly, and anyone else who's ever been connected to the religion.

Well, it turns out Isaac Hayes who plays Chef in the South Park cartoon is also a Scientologist. He quits, and rages against the heretical machine that is South Park. :soapbox:

You'd think that would be all, but it turns out big shot Hollywood actor :: directo Tom Cruise was also watching.

Tom Cruise stopped a US TV channel from airing an episode of 'South Park' that mocks him - by threatening to refuse to promote 'Mission Impossible 3'.

"Temporarily anozinizing our episode will NOT stop us from keeping Thetans forever trapped in your pitiful man-bodies... You have obsructed us for now, but your feeble bid to save humanity will fail!"

I've been keeping up with this ever since i found out about it, what strikes me is the Isaac Hayes
"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

How can a man who says something like this expect to be taken seriously when he has been with the show since the first aired episode. For Whedons Sake, he plays a character in a show that has God portrayed as some freaky Platypus mix, a Gay Devil who screws Saddam and Jesus as a whiny guy with a talk show........
South Park spends 20 minutes of its 22 minute running time poking fun at EVERYTHING, but by the end there is a genuine message of how certain things are taken to lunacy levels.....this saddens me, and don't get me started on Tom Cruise.

Hmm, i wonder if he'll stop the channels showing Scary Movie 4, i mean that not only mocks War of the Worlds, it goes straight for him.
 
The really bizzare thing about Issac is that the Scientology show aired last year and he just quit this week!
 
Yeah, it's like Scientology was working in the background getting ready to hit the rerun with a double-whammy of Isaac and Tom.

Did you notice SP was also calling Tom Cruise a homosexual in that episode? Nicole Kidman says to him, "Come out of the closet Tom. You're not fooling anyone".

So I get it now. All those Conan O Brian in-jokes were going over my head, about how Katie might be pregnant and it couldn't be his. So this is why they say the Katie and Tom thing is just a setup for publicity, right?
 
Apparently "The Church" has been on Issac's back for a while, hence why it took so long for him to say "Hang on, that episode last November was offensive!"

Allegedly the whole pregnancy is a publicity thing, as apparently Katie isn't the baby type, or not this young. Only read interviews and stuff when im bored, but I think her family are dead set against Tom. The whole relationship started when Batman Begins and WOTW came out, so it was a nice hookup for them. Dunno when Katie is due, but could link to MI3 (dunno when thats due either).

Personally I side with South Park, cause it knows how to mock itself.

This confuses me, How would Tom not promoting MI3 give him leverage, shouldn't it work the other way round, They say they wont air ads for MI3 if they are not allowed to air the ep??
 
Apparently the same conglomerate owns the studio putting out MI 3 that owns Comedy Central which puts out South Park. MI 3 is a gigantic investment. If it bombs it can affect the fortunes of the studio. That's my understanding.

Tom Cruise's manager claims Cruise had nothing to do with the SP episode being cancelled.
 
IF Tom Cruise doesnt go on the 'Chat Show' circuit of the world, then that would affect the press the film would receive, thus not getting the message to everyone.
The execs weigh up the viewers for the show, against the hopesul $300m at least they would hope to earn from the movie, and bow to his whim.....but he never actually said it though, did he😉?
 
Going slightly OT, but staying slightly on, there was another incident of religion bashing on South Park I found kind of interesting.

Do you remember all the fuss that was made about the Mohammed cartoons which appeared in that Danish newspaper? Well, didn't Matt and Trey do cartoons of Mohammed pre-dating the Danish comics? It was the super-friends episode.

Why would the Muslims choose to attack the Danish cartoons, but ignore the South Park ones? South Park reaches many more people than a Danish newspaper. Could it have something to do with the fact South Park has also bashed Judaism, and it would be more difficult for the Muslims to appear as if their religion was being singled out?

Here's my point. I think religious protests of these sort are strategized by church higher-ups to assert credibility to their private causes, rather than any honest umbrage against a slight to religion.

I personally think it's funny that everyone (and I mean here, a majority of the population) is up in arms about this! Come on, Mr Hayes, you have a freakin problem with Scientology bashing, but what about all the other religion bashing that's been done on the show? You might not practice those religions, but show the same respect that you expect for your own personal religion!

It's just funny. South Park makes fun of everything. Nothing escapes it. The writers are not biased on anything. Everything is fair game. Deal with it! And if you don't like it.... don't watch it!

Why all the fuss over Scientology? Its only been around for like five minutes, but they bash Judaism or Catholicism, or Hinduism, and nobody says anything. Maybe its just 'cause the people involved. I mean if an A-List actor got upset about Catholicism bashing, maybe I would understand it, but as it is, I don't really have that much respect for a religion where you have to be relatively wealthy to join. Religion shouldn't have anything to do with wealth in my opinion.

Ok Scientology is rather bizarre but..If they want to beleive that they are Aliens in Human bodies ok with me as long as they don't harm the population, with their theories...As long as Katie Holmes is not carrying an Alien ....

Seriously South park i found rather offensive anyway so it is no surprise they polk fun at things that should be left alone.
 
I agree its slightly juvenile, but there is something slightly cultish about Scientology, besides they were getting back because (it appears that) Hayes quit because the Scientology church wanted him to.
 
Scientologist are really sneaky... tricking you to get into there building pretending it's a "stress" test or something....

As for the people questioning Scientology's authenticity as a religion.. What the hell? Do you think you're George Bush or something??
 
I'm a South Parkologist. We think both George Bush (politician), and John Travolta (scientologist) should be publicly "pantsed" and laughed at for their shortcomings (so to speak).
 
Okay, so I think that people should be allowed to believe in whatever they want to believe in, whether I agree with it or not. But I also believe in the freedom of speech and expression. If you don't know, South Park makes fun of everything, and its nondiscriminatory towards anything. It makes fun of everything without exception. Nothing in life is so serious that you can't find some humor in it. That includes religion. If you find it offensive don't read it or watch it. To get angry and to make remarks about how wrong you think it is will just lead to arguments that detract from the orginal discussion.

Personally, I think that any religion that makes you pay a large sum or money up front to join its Church, is something to look into very carefully. I prefer religions that aren't concerned with money or material wealth, rather those who focus solely on the spiritual. South Park is IMO a way for us to step back and look at the way we see ourselves, and maybe loosen up a bit. Its just humor.
