Scott Hope, what was the point?

I found Buffy's new boyfriend pointless. it was too soon after Angel and did they have to pair her up just for the sake of it?

What does everyone else think of this short lived "relationship?"

Buffy was trying to move on from Angel. I agree it did seem too soon, but as far as she knew he was dead, and there really isn't a point on hanging onto someone who's gone and never coming back. Especially when the guilt was eating her alive; she'd spent the entire Summer mourning Angel and blaming herself for everything that happened with him.

I think Scott was just her attempt at trying to move on to a "normal" boyfriend and get back into the swing of things.

I loved Scott Hope. I found him sexy, sweet and intelligent. Out of all the guys that are shown in the Buffyverse, Scott is actually the one that I would most likely date in real life. I liked that Buffy was allowed to have a normal relationship for a short amount of time, and Scott realised, before anyone else, that Buffy was still in love with Angel, and how much it was hurting her to be away from him.

He turned out gay though. :P
I liked Scott... He seemed really sweet and adorable (until he dumped Buffy)... I didn't mind him. As far as we knew Angel was dead and it seemed liked a chance for Buffy to move past the gloom and doom in her life.

I took the Scott/Buffy pairing about as serious as Buffy/Parker. Which is like none. I mean, he was a cool decent guy (unlike Parker) but I knew it was going no where (just like Parker). I agree, I think he was kind of a "we need to pair Buffy with someone" guy.

I completely forgot who he was (oop!) so I looked him up. It said he came out as gay in a later season. When did that happen?

If I'm very honest here... I didn't care a bit about him. I barely even see him as a 'character'. Just some dude Buffy hooked up with and who stupidly dumped an amazing girl. 😉 I don't even get why he gets a mention in season 7, lol. Waste!

The point is to show that Xander is finally over Buffy. C'mon, for the past two seasons, every guy Buffy dates/shows interest in makes Xander boil with jealousy, but after S2, Xander realized there's no chance, and moved on to Cordelia (and Willow).

I don't think that was the ONLY point, but good point. :)
Buffy tried dating a normal guy (i.e. not a vampire) before - Owen. And it didn't work. Because she wasn't normal herself. Same with Riley. And even Parker. Dating normal guys is just not Buffy, I guess. No matter how much she tries, that kind of relationship seem to never work out. I agree, Buffy was trying to move on, and she wanted to do that with a regular guy. But it was meant to fail from the start. I see a pattern. So I think Buffy really really wants normal relationship, except she might never have it.
What I'm trying to say is, Buffy tries to have normal life whilst she can't have one. Because she's living in another world. It wasn't all about dating normal guys, it was also about HAVING a normal life. Sorry, Buffy.

If you're willing to overlook the fact that he was a closet case. Of course, that was retconned later.

Was it retconned? I thought he was just flat out gay. But yeah, I don't really think he was gay. Just another rumour. After all the same person that said Scott was gay also said Buffy was a lesbian.

He didn't say Buffy was a lesbian. He said that Scott was spreading rumors that she was. Because he was actually gay himself. :P

Holden Webster tells Buffy in Conversations With Dead People.

I don't mind Scott, but I don't particularly like him either. I'm ambivalent.

Do you think Scott dumped Buffy for the reason he said he did? Reminder: he said that before they were dating, she was more alive-like. Why did he dump her, for this reason, he was worried about her too much, was it because he was really gay, or because he wanted to date another girl, say the one he went with to Homecoming?

I've always thought it was a mix between him being actually gay and she wasn't really into it.

How do we know that wasn't just a friend of Scott's? Can you imagine if Buffy had just been dumped and had no one to go to a dance with? I'm pretty sure Xander would offer to take her if he was available. And they have been seen dancing together as well. I don't see why Scotts quite innocent dancing with another girl made him a bad guy. And well, his instincts were right about Buffy, she was in love with someone else. I don't think it's impossible to judge that when you're in a relationship with someone.

I always just thought it was to show that Buffy was a "normal" teen too. It would have been weird if she didn't have the normal love interests. I didn't mind the relationship, I thought it was just meant to be what it was. A casual highschool thing.

I agree. Don't think there was much else to it.
I never got the point of that relationship, Buffy was miserable at the time and was probably just trying to reassure her friends that she was okay by dating and showing that she was moving on.

I did not like Scott Hope, he was nice enough but annoying and bland..
and I hated him as Ethan on Queer As Folk so... bleh 🙄

I think she was pushed in it.

Her friends wanted to see her happy, and she could be happy without a man.

Maybe he showed us that not everyone can understand Buffy, and that some guys just want to live normal High School life. Scott was one of those guys..

And people think Riley is boring, but they like Scott Hope?! I do not get that at all. Riley held Buffy's interest for a year at least. I think the main point of adding him to the lineup was the get that awesome episode title, but other than that I agree that it is to show Buffy trying to move on. The problem is that the minute Angel came back, poor Scott didn't have a chance in hell. Personally, I didn't like him at all, I found nothing attractive about him. He was kind of annoying. I liked Owen better.

I like Riley! In a lot of ways I preferred ruffy to bangel!

Riley karma!
I get that Willow wanted Buffy to move on, but why did they pick Scott? He seemed like a boorish, skinny pencil neck. At least Riley had a cool job and a physique that Buffy could appreciate. Scott Hope is what Willow should have dated if Willow weren't dating Oz.

I agree with the 1st part, but not about Willow.
