scratched dvd repair???

Hey.

so my awesome gf bought me S6 + S7 of buffy a few months back.

I got her into buffy last year and have owned S 1- S 5 for a while now. so we watched all those and she boguht me 6/7.

anyways. watched 6, no problems.

got onto 1st episode of disc 2 of S7 (the ep where anya kills the frat boys w/the spider demon). and.. the ep won't play after a certain point. i look @ the dvd and there is a HUGE scratch across most of the disc face.

I'd like to just rebuy S7 except where when my gf bought it it was $20. it's now $50 (i assume cuz of all the friggin twlight fans think 'oo vampires yay' sorry. no sparkling, no prancing shirtless man/boys or whatever 😛).

anyways to get the point. does anyone know a way to repair a scratch in a dvd so it'll read properly so i can watch the rest of the damn ep's on the disc?

If the scratch is really deep on the back of the disc then I doubt it can be removed. A lot of gaming shops (well here in the UK) will clean a disc or CD for you. I had an Xbox 260 game that I badly damaged and the scratches were too deep to clean off. Take it back to where you bought it from and enquire as they might be able to give you a straight swap on your DVD's.

There's a bunch of products available that claim to remove scratches on DVD's etc I've never used any myself, can't say if they're effective or not. There's also a bunch of "home remedy" stuff online, don't know how much faith I would put in them though, basically I wouldn't be rubbing any of my DVD's with a banana or toothpaste 🙂 I'd stick with professional products.

I would try to exchange it first (hopefully your girlfriend saved the receipt or paid by check or credit card so that you have proof of purchase) and if that doesn't work, you might try someplace like Amazon.com or Warehouse.com (you can buy a "used-like new" set for just under $20 if you're willing to buy that way. I've bought dozens of used dvd's from Amazon, and have yet to get a bad one, but that, of course doesn't mean that it couldn't happen) As far as repairing a badly damaged disc, I doubt that it's really possible with the equipment that you would have at home.

Yeah i'd try to exchange it. Most places that sell used DVDs have a guarantee for stuff that doesn't work right. So you should either be able to get another copy or get your money back. Good luck. 🙂

yea i dont have the receipt anymore (i had it for about a month or so but then it got tosses with some scrap paper) but i'll see if they can do a disc exchange.

also i found it at best buy for $20 (for whole S7) so push comes to shove i'll rebuy S7.

Try going to a place that sells second hand DVD's.
Maybe there is somewhere that distributes hire copies, the repair equipment they have will be better than most places.
DVD's are made with a good coating of plastic (or similar), so that the surface the info is on doesn't get easily damaged.
Before getting another copy ask if it can be repaired.
Alternatively go to a place that distributes and sells second hand DVD's, if they are willing to buy it your scratched version then the chances are it can be repaired.
How do you clean your DVD's? the correct way is gently from the middle to the outside edge with a dry cloth that won't leave bits.
How often do you clean your DVD player?
Can it get much dust, smoke, crap on it? Run a proper cleaner disc every two to four weeks, that may be to often, but depending on how often you clean your discs, it might be just right.

If a DVD doesn't work right it may have a deep scratch, course it could be that the DVD lense has a bit of a film on it and the two combine and exasperate the problem.
