I was excited to see this one because I really liked Scream 5. I'll say I think I still prefer Scream 5, but I still enjoyed this one. I thought the opening kills were really clever, I liked bringing back Kirby, I really liked the ending, because I did not see it coming. They got me with the Kirby fake out. I did suspect that there was multiple killers though, I just didn't see the family thing coming. But I think there were some problems with this one that I didn't feel were in the last one. But I still don't like Sam seeing de-aged Skeet Ulrich as Billy Loomis. That's just too much for me. No one really significant dies. We didn't know or care enough about Mindy's gf or the therapist, and cute neighbor guy didn't die. Also, I'm tired of the cops showing up like 10 seconds too late. I understand horror tropes, but let's get rid of some of them and stop trying to "subvert" everything. But still I enjoyed seeing this, there was a group of people in the theatre cheering and laughing, which made it fun.

Every one of the new “core four” got at least a little growth—especially Tara and Chad! Gale’s scenes were so much more well done than last year. And Hayden was having SO MUCH FUN as Kirby.

Did we see the same movie? Other than Sam and Tara I didn't see any character growth. Chad was just here as a useless love interest for Tara. Hayden was fine but I wouldn't say "fun", Gale had one good scene, but cute neighbor boy was pointless other than to be a red herring. And Mindy was only 1/3 right about the killer.

There's no way Chad, Gale OR Mindy should have survived those stab wounds.

Absolutely agree. Mindy I could see surviving, she only had one(or two) stabs to the gut, but Chad was stabbed like 20 times all over his body. He should have absolutely been dead. Maybe even Gale, but I feel like they want to keep Courtney Cox around in case Neve Campbell doesn't want to come back for Scream 7 either. I feel like killing Chad could have given the characters someone to grieve over in Scream 7.

The cop saying he switched the bodies and nobody apparently checked if it was Quinn or not because ‘it’s amazing what they’ll let a grieving father get away with’ didn’t really make sense.

I agree. I watch too much Law & Order, to know that he couldn't get away with that, at least not until the coroners does a proper examination. Also, what was Quin planning on doing after? Be like "whoops I didn't die".

NYC was nonexistent- It could've taken place in any other city and wouldn't have made a difference.

I think they could have used NYC a bit better. Like when they were running around Central Park in the middle of the day. That would have been a great opportunity to have Ghostface killing out in the daytime. Really make it feel like all bets are off with this one.

Not even! He could just say he was a ghost. Worked for Nick Jonas on that better Scream show.

In 5, Chad had like 15 lines and it was all about being the typical jock trying to get into the pants of his girlfriend… and then not, when he thought she could be the killer. Mindy has less lines, and was literally just there to be the new Randy and explain the rules. In 6, Chad has evolved and began to truly care about his personal love interest, and his new surrogate family, he names the “Core Four”. He’s become a protective teddy bear for them. Mindy now has a girlfriend and you can see that she isn’t just called a lesbian for what felt like wokeness. You can even see in the way Anika and Mindy interact, they have established a loving relationship. Kirby went from subverted horror nerd to badass FBI agent, and was even used as an awesome red herring!

I really think the reason they didn’t die in this one was to set up 7 to really hurt when Chad or Mindy or even both are actually killed. By spending two films with them, their deaths will hurt so much more.

Yeah, as much as they hyped it up I thought it would have been a bigger backdrop. With the exception of maybe two scenes it could have taken place literally anywhere else.

It didn't feel big enough or crazy enough. And NYC can be hella scary even without masked serial killers chasing you around. Aside from the flaws in the script, I would've simply liked to have seen more of the city itself...it really didn't feel like we were in NYC (& I'm from NY state, went to college in Manhattan & lived in Queens for 6 years). We also should've seen more New Yorkers confronting Ghostface, getting in the way or helping etc..Maybe I missed it when I went to the bathroom but did we even see a cab/car ride? I don't think so. It did little to show the sprawl of the city or capture that chaotic, sometimes scary energy. There are so many nooks and crannies of the city.. I guess I was hoping for serious chase sequences and got zilch. The subway scene felt more like an artistic dream than a scary encounter. The bodega... like why? It would've been much scarier if he simply followed the girls once they left the bodega (and made more sense), kept to the shadows behind them until they were underground, more trapped or isolated. Attacking in the bodega shows more style than substance- why doesn't Ghostface just walk through Times Square blowing people away with an AK-47? doesn't seem very stealthy. And the ladder scene... I already saw a scene like that in the movie Nerve and it was much more interesting & exciting. Scream 6 could've used a skyscraper, the Empire State building or a million other things.

Similar to how Scream 3 used Hollywood/LA, no? Everything about this film is an homage to the 5 that came before. I am not from NY but I did feel like it fit there.

Yeah, but they didn't have a poster with Ghostface standing by the Hollywood sign, they didn't have trailers touting all new location and people talking about how LA is going to be the centerpience for the movie.

The whole film used NY staples (bodega, small flats, train station, etc) without being like “since were in NY, Ghostface throws a body off the Empire State Building”. But also, the crew had an issue of creating a NY feel but filming in Canada. I think they did a great job of making it feel like NY, despite that barrier.

I wouldn't say giving them love interest is character development. Chad is literally introduced in this movie with his shirt off, trying to hit on girls for his friend and ready to get into a fight with someone. How is that different from his character last movie? I think your grasping for straws on Chad and Mindy's "character development."

I actually thought the ladder scene was ridiculous. Why does that guy have an extendable ladder in his apartment? Is that a common thing for New Yorkers to have on hand?

I've been to New York twice, and especially at night, that place feels sketchy as heck. I remember walking through Central Park around sunset, and we literally went around because we didn't want to walk under this bridge tunnel that had dim lighting and questionable people in it. I also watch a lot of Law and Order shows, so if you're gonna do New York, then DO New York!

The killer in the opening was kinda dumb for a Scream killer like he stepped in Ghostface's game, got lead on so easily & got killed off without a big fight. I don't remember but was he a newbie in the killing business?

It was his first kill! He said it on the phone when he thought he was talking to his roommate. I thought it was a great flip on what has gone before. You still have the innocent blond killed, but it’s slightly subverted. And it makes sense that there would be copycat Ghostfaces.

We did see one. Tara and Sam get into a taxi when they leave the police station.

Finally saw it Monday. It's certainly the most brutal of the films. But I agree with those who say it is becoming predictable. I nailed 2 of the 3 killers early on (Ethan and Wayne). Didn't call Quinn because 1) seemed likely there was only 2 killers and 2) she seemed legitimately dead since we saw her body hauled out. I had assumed she was killed for betraying the family by being friends with Tara and Sam.

I certainly agree that Danny having an extendable ladder in his apartment seems odd. Most you should need is a stepladder. Maybe his job needs one and he doesn't want to leave it in the back of his truck? Of course, given the damage Anika took I seriously doubt she'd have lived long enough to get on the ladder, let alone make it part way across.

That is sort of what I assumed too. That he was just some handyman type. He certainly seemed it!

My favorite Gale line this movie was "It's all about true crime mini-series these days". I felt that deep in my soul. And slightly attacked. 😂

My favorite Kirby line was "Saw that in a movie once". Was that a callback to Sidney? I feel like Sidney said that in the original.

Reading through the thread it seems many were in the 'this film sucked' camp, and whilst I understand the rationale I feel that this film wasn't terrible. I think the hype surrounding it, and its fresh setting, may've set up expectations that the film failed to deliver on.

- I thought that the opening, with both killings, was very strong, possibly one of the best openings, and the set-pieces seen in the trailer were also strong. But, not much else to rave about.

- I really like Sam and Tara. I actually like them more than I ever liked Sydney, Gail or Dewey. Also yay for returning Kirby.

- I enjoyed all the returning characters (with the exception of Mindy, who I still dislike), but all the new characters were pretty flat, even the ones who ended up being the killers.

- Also this film was way too safe, nobody of significance died, and this in the film that declared 'this is a franchise now, anybody could die!' Actually, no, none of the returning characters will die, even ones that clearly should've. And yeah, I know this happened with Dewey but I didn't like it then either.
It seemed like a waste given that the absence of Sydney was a golden opportunity to really shake things up, and its probably the biggest mark against this movie; not enough horror.

- Finally, for the first time I guessed not only the identity of one of the killers (the Dad) but also the motive, since the motive was revenge just like in Scream 2 (and also Sick, another Kevin Williamson film with a 'family revenge plot') which made the ending seem pretty by the numbers and a tad too predictable.

All in all I'd give this a 6-ish. It's certainly not a bad Scream movie (so its not 3) but its passable/middling instead of dynamic and excellent. Still, investment in seeing the characters means that I wouldn't mind seeing another
