Spoiler! Scream VI - Spoilers

I am the only real Ghostface. Sorry folks! I guess you weren't around on the boards when this exciting fact was revealed. 🙀

With that said, unsurprisingly I am a big fan of the franchise. I even tried to watch the TV series, but god was that awful!

No sequel will ever beat the original, but the last two were pretty decent. I always like the meta-commentary on horror and cinema in general.

Since some people have done this in the thread, here is how I'd rate them:

Scream 9/10
Scream 2 7/10
Scream 3 6/10
Scream 4 7/10
Scream 5 7/10

Yes, that third movie is lame as ****!

As for OP, I'll definitely check this new one out.
 
I think the latest two Scream films have been a real blessing to the franchise, since I think that Scream 3 is actually bad, not 'the weakest' but an actual bad movie, and a crappy way to end a trilogy.
So I'm glad that they decided to continue it, whilst also making a statement about the 'current state' of horror at the same time; with Scream 4's derisive commentary on torture porn horror and Scream (2022) examining the concept of the re-quel (although it's take on 'toxic fandom' was simplistic).


One question; Is this 'the final' Scream movie, or the middle installment of a second sequel?

It hasn’t been billed as the final one. I think they are trying to resurrect the franchise from the awful tv series. So the next one could be the final… or they may go to 10!

I'm excited for this, gonna get my tickets this weekend! I have seen all the movies, but not the TV series. (It's on my list but a low priority.)

Maybe this warrants a separate thread - but does anyone wanna share their experience from watching Scream 1? I saw it in theaters and DAMN it was a ride. I remember being SHOCKED about Drew Barrymore. (Do I need to tag spoilers for a non BTVS 25+ year old movie?)

So, I saw the first one in bits and pieces, as I was like 6 when it came out. But I vividly remember the 3rd one, especially the final act, because it used to play non-stop on one of the movie channels when it first came out.

Then, as I got deeper into the love of horror around that time, I remember watching the first one and being SO CRUSHED that Rose (Tatum) was literally crushed in the garage because I knew her as Paige first. Lol. But Scream 1-3 and I Know What You Did Last Summer 1&2 were my favorite horror movies when I was a teenager. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen these movies. (The possibility of a third I Know sequel coming out is making me so excited!)

Here’s my feelings on each movie:

Scream (1996) - perfect, iconic scary movie. The meta horror and camp was on point, and so reflective of 90s culture. “Please don’t kill me Mr. Ghostface, I want to be in the sequel!” Le-gen-dary.

Scream 2 - Perfect sequel. The kills are amped up a notch, the killer reveal was just perfect, the camp and comedy aren’t overdone. Just love it.

Scream 3 - I actually love this one, even more than the 2 recent ones. I tend to headcanon that Roman made up the backstory about Sid’s mom because it literally makes 0 sense. But the camp throughout the movie was on point. I loved the focus of Gale in this one. She really shows her growth since the first movie. Never had requested a lighter role in this movie and it did good for Gale’s character.

Scream 4- as a follow up a decade later to the original trilogy, this did so well. Again, it was a great Gale story, with her going solo against Dewey in finding the killer. I’ve grown a bigger appreciation for Emma Roberts’s self-mutiliation scene because it is camped up to 1000. And everything Kirby was great!

Scream (2022) - Admittedly, I would have liked more Gale and Sidney in this one. Dewey made a dumb decision to go back against the killer alone and it still annoys me that because it really doesn’t make a lot of sense that this particular character was able to do this. But it’s Scream, so I let it slide. Going back through all the films, it doesn’t hit as hard as the first two films. But it’s still a great re-introduction to the franchise.
 
No Sydney goddam Prescott? The best final girl of all time? Urgh, now I'm disappointed.

That means that Gail Weathers is gonna bite the big one, for sure.
 
Honestly though, Gale has had more character development than Sidney. She’s always doing more in the films. Sidney is usually just reacting to Ghostface while Gale is the one solving the crimes. Gale is the true final girl. Lol

I was in college when the original came out. I was so excited to see it with my friends after we got back on campus after winter break. I remember being worried about Drew Barrymore's character (Casey) but I knew she was on the poster. (I think the trailer I had seen featured her, and the poster maybe only had her.) And I was getting more and more worried but figured she would be OK, because of the poster. And then wow. I was so so stunned when she was killed. Like Drew Barrymore wasn't at Charlie's Angels level of famous yet but she was still a name. You couldn't tear me outta my seat for the rest of the movie, not for all the money in the world.

I don't remember any details about my experience of the rest of the movie but I liked it then and it's more than held up on rewatches.

Like sometimes I want to see iconic movies / moments in theaters. Like Alien 1, seeing it spoiler free in a theater, what a rush that must have been! (I did not see that in theaters.) And then I remember I had that, with Scream. It was great.

BTW your spoiler for 5 (2022) didn't show up for me. Weird.

While I'm glad that new people are getting featured (especially Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera) I am upset that they lowballed Neve Campbell. I'm not gonna boycott the movie (6) but it's such bullshit. Hard agree that they HAVE to get her back at some point, even if it's a shorter role. Pay her!!

I just want them to give Sid something to do. They ALMOST did that in 5, but she only really appeared in the third act. I think they planned on that for 6 before the studio lowballed Neve. The writers definitely planned for Sid to be in it, and had to rewrite some things after that fiasco. But I’m excited. 6. Days!

Exactly.

If Star Wars somehow managed to bring in Harrison Ford for 9, then you’d better believe Scream will manage to get Neve for the final entry.
 
I think there are a lot of ancillary characters they could kill for effect in a future movie:
Martha Meeks (Randy's sister, Chad and Mindy's mom)
Neil Prescott (Sidney's dad; he was declared dead in a deleted scene from 4, but his fate hasn't been discussed in anything canon since his last appearance in 3)
Mark Kincaid (Sidney's husband and the homicide detective from 3)
Hank Loomis (Billy's father, Sam's grandfather)

That could be a good setup for getting the gang back together. Instead of targeting the main characters they target their families.
