But whether you like it or not you are questioning my word and integrity.

Initially nerd4hire had every reason to ask me to offer support on what i was claiming. I made a statement that he needed proof of, that is fair enough.

However, after that i have plainly stated that i have no proof available to you simply because i have not the time or energy in my working day to track it down. I'll be honest here, even if i had all the time in the world i probably wouldn't do so, simply because at the end of the day this is just a thread about a speculation on a television series. No matter how good that series is, it is still not something i would actively devote my time and resources to proving.

So, after being perfectly honest and stating that this information is from memory alone and that i cannot offer support, i instead offer my word to you that i'm being truthful and that i wouldn't bother pushing this information on to you if i didn't know in my heart that i was 100% correct. In that i gave my word.

By not only refusing that but then going on to make me out a liar nerd4hire was absolutely questioning both my word and my integrity.

May i also point out that all of this is over one word. One word in a sentence spoken in one episode that has nothing whatsoever to do with the scythe in the first place. I even offered up several other explanations that would help avoid the problem altogether but rather than accept them we instead continued to dwell on the fact that i could only offer my own expertise on why that one word wasn't appropriate.

As for why should people believe me when i say that i'm an honest man? Well, the fact that you are even asking me that question is a sad statement about the way of the world today. Frankly it's laughable that you would think i would care enough to lie about something as ultimately trivial as a television show. Are we discussing weapons of mass destruction in Iraq? Are we deciding the fate of a man on trial for murder? No! We are talking about a theory based around things mentioned in a television series!

Honestly, i have more important things to do with my life than make things up about that.

So again, when you remove all the details and information regarding Buffy and the subject of witchcraft it boils down to one thing. I gave my word on something and it was rejected. No matter which way you slice it, that is what i would describe as questioning my honesty. The very trivial nature of what we are discussing just makes the insult all the more annoying.

Very well then. I offered The Watcher final word on this thread by way of summation of his arguements on the question - Is it possible the Scythe can be used as a conduit? The Watcher has refused. This dissapoints me. I was pretty sure I could offer up a pretty substantial, well supported arguement to back up my side of the debate (Yes it is a debate. Insinuating it is something else is pointing at the elephant in the room, and saying "What elephant")

So be it though. If The Watcher doesn't want final word, I will take it. I will post this, then close the thread.

OK so since we're kumbayaing about what we see as our personal characters, allow me to offer up my interpretation of my own.

I see myself as a common sense kind of guy. If someone says to me "Why can't we trust the word of the people we meet on the internet without double-checking their facts?" I'm going to say because we can't. There are so many incidents of why we can't I don't know where to begin - although I did get an email recently from a guy in a Nigeria who wanted to make me a millionaire. Hey, maybe I should believe that guy. Maybe I should give him the bank account number he requested without typing Nigerian email scam into Google.

As I said common sense. If someone produces an arguement I believe to be specious based on common sense, and research I am going to tell him that's what I think the arguement is.

Specious: plausible but false; "a specious claim"; "spurious inferences"

I am not calling the person a liar. I am saying I find his arguement specious. I will tell him why I think that is the case.

If I suggest a person's arguement is a dilettante's arguement, I am not insulting the person, I am insulting the arguement.

Dilettante: adj : showing frivolous or superficial interest

But back to myself, and common sense. I'm the kind of guy who when confronted with the kind of arguement which I interpret as nothing more than a big floaty head of illusory expertise, yet am told "Pay no attention to the man behind the screen" I will do a Dorothy. I will ignore the floaty head run over to the screen pull it back, and talk to the desperate looking little man behind it who is pulling the switches. I want to know the truth.

When I am debating someone and he tells me it is not a debate, I'm going to say "Sure it is. You can tell, because we're debating." I'm going to suggest the possibility he doesn't see it as a debate is because he believes once he has spoken there is no further need for arguement. I will suggest that is not necessarily the case, and try to support the arguement in a common sense manner.

To me this debate goes beyond the question of what happened in a TV show. It goes to the question of am I allowed personal opinion, or must I accept the opinions of others as fact once they present themselves as having expertise on the subject.

The arguement also asks questions like must fictional representions answer to the interpretations of offered up experts in fields external to the fictional universe. I say no. I think it's worth discussing.

Now as to the question of is it possible the scythe can be used as a conduit, I believe it is central to the theory presented in this thread. Telling me it is not without offering support as to why, is just another "big, floaty head" arguement. It is saying, "You're points are invalid because I have said so. The great and powerful Oz has spoken."

Common sense tells me that's what I'm hearing. If one does not want to hear the reactions of all the wee, little Dorothy's of the world who insist on peaking behind the screen, they would be wise not to seek confrontation with us.
