Question season 3 question

I recently started watching the show and really liked it. I am in season 3 and I have a question. I just finished watching the episode called 'Helpless' where Giles gets fired. My question is, why should Buffy or Giles for that matter recognize the authority of the council of watchers or whatever it is called. It doesn't seem to me like they are all that powerful. They are just a bunch of old guys per my understanding. What authority do they have in the matter of what Buffy or any slayer for that matter should or shouldn't do? What will happen if the slayer refuses to obey?

Since this is your first time watching, I don't want to spoiler you. But throughout the series you'll find out more about the council. Their origins, how much power they have, etc etc.

Are you sure you want to know more? I think I can say, without being spoiler-y, that Giles has since a early age(which I think is mentioned in season 2) been raised to be a watcher, so it was hard for him to break away from them. We're actually seeing more of Giles' past with the watcher's in the season 9 comics, which I hope you get to read one day. Lots of flashback-y goodness.

It's a bit the same for Buffy. Watchers' show up, tell her her destiny and that they're meant to guide her and that she has to obey. She's confused, lost, but want to help people, so she listen. But you'll soon see that Buffy's not very pleased with this arrangement.

Well they did threaten to deport Giles if he interfered with the new watcher's (I'm assuming you don't know who that is yet) plans. This makes Buffy realize that they have quite a bit of power, so they (she and Giles) might as well play along for now.

They have a lot of power and influence. It's a large government-like organization. They also have a gigantic "database" that was accessible to Giles as a watcher. This helped them greatly in their research of demons, and they were probably able to request weapons and other items that would help them to battle demons.

It's really pleasing to see Buffy fans actively discussing the show even though it's been years since the show ended...to be honest, I wasn't so sure I would get an answer, let alone 3. So, I'll keep watching the show to find out more about the watchers and just assume for now that they have a lot of power...

P.S. did you guys get my doubt at all when you were watching that episode?
