Question Season 4: Worst Season Ever?

Just a discussion really....

Personally, I think that this is one of the most disappointing in the entire series. Although I'm loathe to criticise anything Buffy, I was really deflated after watching season 4. There were good parts of it such as Faith's return,the introduction of new characters and the finale where they all take part in the spell. However I am not a big fan of Riley and think the season in all went off on a tangent.

Opinions/Ideas anyone?

I disagree with you. Season 4 wasn't the best in the series. But I have never had a problem with it. And I've always liked Riley.
 
I have to say that season 4 is my favorite...more specifically the episode The Initiative. It was this episode that completely and totally hooked me on Buffy....the Willow/Spike metaphorical impotence issue thing, the Xander/Harmony slap fight....just hilarious! :happy53: I had only watched a few episodes before I happened to catch this one in syndication. Since then I couldn't get enough. Also, this is my go-to season if I need cheering up!😀
 
Season 4 is hands down my least favorite to rewatch but I still love it. I think the reason it's my least favorite is I miss Angel, Oz, Cordy and Faith (even though I love Spike) and I hate Riley with a passion. I also don't like the Initiative and Adam.

I think it's also hard for a lot of people to connect with it because not everyone has the dorm/university experience whereas most people have some type of high school experience.
 
I love season four. I don't even mind the Initiative plotline. It could have been done better - I think if Maggie had been the real big bad, and not Adam, and the show had delved into the shades of grey of the demons, it would have been more successful.

However... when people say that season four is the worst season I think they're not seeing the wood for the trees and forgetting about all the great standalone eps. People think season four and go - "Oh, Initiative. Adam. Blech." - without thinking about the greatness that is Pangs, and Something Blue, and A New Man, the Faith eps, Restless.

TL;DR: Season four is good.
 
I dig a lot of episodes in season four. And the final battle with Adam was awesome. Bullets into doves? That is greatness. And I also love Restless. It's one of my favorite eps.

And I did like what they were trying to do with the Initiative. I mean really, it only makes sense that the government is trying to control and manipulate the demon world too. 😛

I actually have a hard time rewatching the first season. I'm doing a rewatch right now and it's taken a lot of willpower to not skip a few episodes. Like the bug lady ep. And the demon in the compy ep. *shakes head.

Speaking of season 1, I'm amused that both the Initiative and this secret school of invisible assassins didn't show up when Angel allied with the military while disguised as Twilight.

Special military forces are a dime a dozen in the Buffyverse.

It would have been insane if the invisible assassins came back. Whoever had to draw that issue would have thier work cut out for them. haha
Season four is definitely my least favorite from an overall stand point but it has some of my absolute favorite stand out series episodes. Like Fear Itself, Something Blue, Doomed, Hush, Superstar, New Moon Rising, and the fantastic Restless.
 
Season four was ok. It was strange at the beginning. It seemed like the writers weren't entirely sure how to fit everyone (like Giles and Xander) into the college lifestyle. So I feel like the season was kind of an experimentation with how to meld the slayer/scoobie lifestyle into college when they all didn't have the library to meet in. Things got better once Giles got the magic shop.

I don't understand why people call this the worst season. I just finished watching Season 4, and overall I really enjoyed it. 🙂 I think it had the most great standalone episodes like Living Conditions, Beer Bad, Something Blue, Hush, A New Man, etc etc.

The only thing I really didn't like about this season was Riley.

So far, I think Season 3 would be my least favourite. I found that season had more boring episodes.

I absolutely LOVE the beginning. I love how things don't quite fit, how Sunday kicked Buffy's butt, how they seemed a bit lost. I loved it!!

And this is the season Willow hit "Smokin' Hotness Perfection." Throw in some of the best episodes ever, and Season 4 is great. I think the squandered Adam's potentional, but I still love this season. I doing a little rewatch right now, and I'm loving it.
 
I agree! The first episode of season 4 is genius and I love the tone it set...starts rocky then Buffy gets her feet back firmly on the ground with a little help from her friends.
 
I really liked season 4. It wasn't my favourite, and Adam was a pretty sucky villain. But it had some pretty awesome and/or funny episodes overall. I'd say the worst season was 7, followed closely by 1.
 
I've read an interview with Mark Blucas. There he said that he had a lot of haters back then. Is this true? Because I didn't watch Buffy on orginal airings.
I liked Riley. Maybe on the first episodes of season 4 he was a little annoying. I like the episode with Angel. Riley is jealous on a really sweet way.
 
I don't think it is the worst. In fact, I'd rank a couple seasons below it. I think it is very underrated and had a lot of humorous episodes in it.
