Review on Season 5: This season and season 4 were tied for being 2nd to last place.
Taking place where the 3rd season final episode left off, A.I. team taking over Wolfram and Hart.
Pros: There were some really good episodes throughout the season. Cordelia came back this season just to do one episode, the 100th episode, which was really good. She acted like herself again, which was missed since toward the end of season 3. The interaction between Illyria with Wes and Spike. Connor comes back in this season.
Wes's character changed so much throughout the seasons, that he had the best transition and was entertaining. From being the goofy character to become dark Wesley and then later on become heartbroken, watching and feeling the woman of his dreams, Fred, die in his arms.
Cons: Knox being added to be a wedge between FRED/WES. I don't understand what the reasoning behind Fred's interest in Knox. Knox brought nothing to the season besides being boring and stale. Again, the writers tried to act like geniuses to separate FRED/WES pairing off. This was a terrible idea just like Gunn being a wedge between FRED/WES was in Season 3.
FINALLY, we get to see FRED/WES hooking up. But the problems is, it's short lived, thanks to Knox and Gunn's involvement. Gee, that's a shocker. Also, Fred realizing that she made a big mistake being with Gunn and should have been with Wes instead all this time. No duh... But it's already too late.
Other characters were added to the season: Spike, Harmony, Eve, Knox, Lindsey. Some of the characters took too much screen time and left the other characters who were in Seasons 1-4 out in the cold. Some of the episodes should not have been made or just too rushed or just out of place.
Gunn's character: Since 3rd season, I've never liked the whole pairing of Fred and Gunn. It was a terrible idea. Gunn is arrogant, liar, selfish, takes credit from other people. In one episode, he lied to the team and hurts the A.I. team and almost costing none other than... Fred's life in the process. Another episode, he lies to the team and tries to take credit from another person and it's connected to none other than... Fred.
Fred and Gunn had finally broken up in Season 4.
Now, we go to Season 5. Has Gunn changed to become better? I was hoping for it. But the answer is still NO. Here's the problem again as in season 3, Gunn acted selfish and lies to the team and this time, it definitely cost one of the members life... namely Fred and hurts the team in the process. Another
episode, instead of taking responsibility from his previous action, he wants to blame someone else. What? He still doesn't get it. As I said before, Fred and Gunn were poor pairing in the begin with. I still don't understand or can't get a definite answer from other people what is so special about Fred and Gunn pairing off in the first place. When Gunn does something stupid, Fred is somehow connected to it.
The final episode NFA: Hated the fact that Wesley died. Black Thorn just popped out of nowhere was badly done. It was cool that everyone in the A.I. team had their day before their fight with the Black Thorn. If Whedon and the others knew that this would be their last episode and they knew they were going to kill Wes, why not just kill everybody else off too: Angel, Spike, Fred/Illyria, and Gunn. No cliffhanger or happy endings then. At least they all fought fighting. The writers already killed Cordelia, Lilah, Lindsey, Fred, and now Wes. The writers had no problem killing off characters before. What's another four more to the list?
