Which moments from Season 5 stand out in your mind as the most heartbreakingly sad?

Five nominations:

5. From "The Body," Buffy's wide-eyed, stunned disbelief through the entire beginning of the episode.

4. The moment just before Buffy tells Dawn about Joyce. Not Dawn's meltdown itself, but when Buffy is watching Dawn talking to her friend in the art room. The innocence of Dawn's conversation, combined with Buffy knowing that the seconds are ticking away to the moment when she'll have to shatter her sister's world.

3. Willow's freakout over what to wear to the morgue. Because we never see Willow worry about anything like that, we know that it comes completely from her deep love for Buffy and her desperate desire to be the perfect friend.

2. The end of "Forever," when Buffy breaks down and confesses to Dawn how terrified she is.

1. The end of "The Gift," from the instant Buffy realizes what she has to do, all the way to the final moment.

Willow's clothes dilemma in The Body is one of my all-time favorites. But I find it more adorable than sad.
(Not sure adorable is the right word to use but I hope someone gets what I mean.)

The end of Forever has always got to me though.
Much more than anything in The Body actually.
- Who's gonna make things better? Who's gonna take care of us? Love those lines from someone as strong as Buffy.

The end of The Gift is of course also a great moment.
Buffy's realization of what she must do and the fact that she seems to find peace in that moment makes me feel less sad though.

Totaly. I can see how you get adorable from that scene. It's not exactly the feeling I get, but it's close. There's something about Willow in that scene...
5. Buffy telling Dawn that Joyce is dead

4. "The Body" "But I don't understand" -Anya

3. "The Body" "Mommy?"

2.The end of "Forever". "When I stop, then she's really gone" When Buffy and Dawn embrace and fall on the floor together

1. The end of "The Gift" (needs no explaination)

Anya's why speech
Willows face when she sees Buffy dead
Giles running to Joyce's body when he sees it on the ground
When Buffy is arguing with Dawn about leading a normal life and says :THEY MIGHT TAKE YOU AWAY!
Buffy throwing up on the ground in the Body

Definetely the Body - Anyas speech- buffys face when she find her mum.

The Gift- Buffys speech to Dawn-Spike crying in the back ground

For me, the most sad moment for Season 5 would definitely be from "The Body". After Giles arrives in the apartment and runs in to help Joyce, Buffy yells "we're not supposed to move the body!"-- that's the point where I'm pretty sure I burst into tears. Sarah Michelle Gellar had some brilliant acting in this scene; watching I could almost feel the revalation sink in that what was once her mother is now nothing more than a body. Totally heart-breaking and gets me every time. 🙁

Season 5 had a lot of moments that made me cry. But, of course, I'm a big emotional wreck so I cry over everything. LOL I cried during The Body, the entire episode. When Giles comes in and Buffy's like "We're not supposed to move the body!"... I always start there and it only gets worse as it goes on. Anya's speech is the best part though, and I always sob with her at the end of it. 🙁
I cried at the end of "Into The Woods" when Buffy ran so hard to try to stop Riley and still didn't make it in time, and then cried even harder at Xander's speech to Anya. Awww...
The end of "The Gift" made me cry as if someone I knew personally had died. I remember this aired right after we lost The WB on our cable list, so I went to my aunt's to watch it in her spare room and came out looking like I'd just had a break down. LOL

I only can agree with TheChosenTwo.
Those moments were the saddest moments I have seen in the whole series. So far 😉

I actually have a ranking for sadness of episodes... the top two being hard crying and sobbing. Hell's Bells and Amends are the only two hard crying ones! (The sobbing are Becoming Pt. 2 and the Gift)
Riley waiting for Buffy at the helicopter in Into the woods was a sad moment, when he realized she wont come. I felt bad for him the full episode. He's probably been worrying for months that he could be dumped at anytime, and Buffy can be really unforgiving at times(alot), like during their argument. Kinda wish Riley stayed.

Buffy just missing Riley in the helicopter.

Willow feeling like she has to change in The Body
Anyas speech in The Body
Dawn being told her mom is dead in The Body

To save time... The Body lol

I wouldn't say the saddest moment, but one of the most compelling is when Willow acknowledges that she will have to look after Tara. Followed by her feeding her.

Just going to save time and say The Body. Heartwrenching and a watermark of television, I always say to everybody I know that if you have even a passing interest in quality well made television then watch that episode.

The Gift is a close second. I always shed a tear whenever Buffy tells Dawn "to live, for me". Wonderful stuff.

My saddest moments is when Buffy finds her mam dead on the sofa and she said " BUFFY: (quieter) Mom? (even quieter) Mom? (very quietly) Mommy?"

Buffy crying on her house steps when Spike comes along with a shotgun to kill her. As soon as he sees her crying he drops the gun and comforts her. I cried.

I was flat out crying when she did the Mommy? As UK said, but I started up all over when she had to tell Dawn at school. Absolutely heart wrenching.
