Season 7 – hit or miss?

I dont dislike any season of buffy but I thought Season 7 could have been so much better.
It had too many things that annoyed me & it made me start to go off most of the main characters - Xander, Willow, Giles, etc (yikes, i know that sounds bad). I felt so sorry for Buffy having her home taken over by the poopy potentials and pretty much being kicked out by not only them but her friends. Spuffy was the only thing holding it together for me, and there could have been more of that too imo.

- "Chosen" was so disappointing, it was just a big generic battle...Buffy used to be about subversion and quality, what happened?
- WHY DID YOU KILL ANYA IF YOU WERE NEVER GOING TO MAKE IT IMPORTANT TO THE STORY
- And Dawn went to High school...but the writers completely abandoned that after like 10 episodes. That story had the potential (Pun intended!) to be great...instead they gave up on that like the did the whole season

I have mixed feelings about Season 7. There were some really great episodes for me (Conversations With Dead People, Lies My Parents Told Me, etc). I didn't really enjoy watching the potentials as much as I wish I did. I did love that they seriously injured Xander - it really added to the story, I felt.

Overall, I say I enjoyed the season, but it definitely doesn't make my top 3 fav seasons.

I agree with this 🙂
season 7 was filled with inspirational moments with buffy and also loving the spike and buffy relationship.
But xander/willow/dawn/anya all kind of disappointed me when they kicked buffy out of HER OWN home jeeess. Also dislike for the potentials and the amount of screentime they had. it did feel abit rushed towards the end of the season, but i think the end of btvs no matter what they did would always disappoint us in one way or another as we dont want it to end at all 🙂

Oh, but I do want to throw in that I love how Buffy finally treated Spike well, and I loved where Spuffy had gotten to in Chosen. So even though this wasn't my favorite season, it had its good bits, and its bad ones.
 
Out of all seven seasons of the show, S7 probably has the most holes in it, but at the same time, I really like it.

Despite what some have said, I really enjoyed Spike's arc this season. I didn't like, at all, some of the directions they went with him in S6, but he became one of my favorites again in S7. The only problem I had with him was the brainwashing storyline dragged on for a while I thought.

I thought The First was an interesting villain who could have been fleshed out better, but was a neat concept. I thought the uber-vamps were great bad guys and The Bringers, while not exactly special, were better henchmen than most of the big bads had.

The Potentials were...alright. Again, interesting concept that wasn't executed perfectly. The big problem with them was that they were all pretty much the same and beyond Kennedy, all were pretty useless. I get what some people have said about the dissatisfaction with Buffy leading the Potentials being the driving arc in the back nine of the season as opposed to more of a focus on Xander, Willow, Giles, Faith and Dawn (who I think they just flat out ran out of things to do with in S7).

I thought Robin Wood was a great character. I didn't care for where Giles went and as always, Anya drove me insane (I actually liked her death scene though). Buffy's speeches were awesome, particularly the one towards the beginning of the season where she talks to Xander and Willow about Angel.

I really enjoyed "Chosen", even if it's just about the worst battle plan of all time. Angel's return and Spike's death are two of my all time favorite scenes. Both were pulled off brilliantly I thought, and I couldn't imagine a better way to wrap Buffy and Spike and give Spike a better send off. I'm still glad he came back for Angel S5 though 🙂. I thought the final Angel scene was excellent, and as a big Buffy/Angel fan, it gave me hope.
 
I love lessions and wish we had spent just a bit more time with Willows recovery thses parts are woefuly small and would have been extreamly good to see just what someone does with someone that tried to destroy the world.

I think most of S7 is Ok
 
I love it and Hate it

I have very mixed feelings about season 7. I love the first 10 episodes of the season. It has the classic Buffy feeling. Especially with the gripes of humor. I appreciated this after the dark 6th season. I love Bring on the Night, and the season seemed to have been building up to something amazing. Seeing Willow possessed by the 1st was really a omg moment. But then something happened... more in the lines of... nothing... As the episodes went on, we were introduced to potential slayers. The worst of the bunch being Vroma? Rhoma? Whatever her name is. All she did was complain and nag constantly. I wanted to smash my television every-time she was on screen.

Plotlines and mythology built early on in the season were abandoned, and things seemingly became very convenient. Remember Buffy's first encounter with Caleb? One punch knocked her out... lets fast foward, the 1st imbues Caleb with its ancient strength and power... How can Buffy be able to withstand hits from a super charged being? i watched that entire fight rolling my eyes. Then there's the stupidest idea placed into the show, The watcher who was sent to watch the watchers... WTF was that? A old lady who watches watchers... who died in less than 5 minutes. Then theres the slayer scyth that virtually came out of knowhere. The Turk Han who went from being super strong became super stupid in the finale.

Then theres Angel's wasted appearance. I would've preferred if he hadn't even showed up. That cookie doe talk with Buffy was embarrassing even to watch. The kiss was just downright wrong on so many levels. I get Joss wanted to cater to Bangel fans, but them kissing at that point of time was very inappropriate considering the situations they both were in. Angle/Cordelia Buffy/Spike. Poor Cordy was in a coma.

Anywho, I hated the inclusion of Andrew. He was not funny. I hated his episode Storyteller. That episode proved just how mentally ill he was. I would've liked it if Clem became a regular instead. Then faith, I love her, they way she was handled on Angel season 4 was superb. Eliza shined in all her seens and the character Faith was appreciated on that show. We see her on Buffy get mistreated over and over again by Buffy. Then she actually punches her in the face. It was at that point where I wanted Faith to kick her ass.

And finally, the infamous Xander betrayal. 1 episode he does a huge speech about Buffy having a big heart... blah blah. the next his eye gets gauged. Then he turns on Buffy because he got hurt. Then the next episode has the audacity to go to Buffy in the kitchen to feed her nonsense about wanting to be with her in the final fight. I couldn't stand anyone on the show at this point. I was rooting for Faith and only Faith
 
I find most of S7 deserving of the fast-forward button, maybe except for the first few episodes. But then it came back magnificently in the last two episodes that were my personal reward for suffering through endless scenes of boring melodrama and characters acting OOC, plus poor SMG battling her cold flying to and fro from Australia and radiating tiredness and lack of enthusiasm in every scene. The saving grace of the season though - and the absolutely needed touch that closed the series on the key of hope, was Angel's appearance in the last two episodes and the final Buffy-Angel kiss. That single scene for me crossed over all the inanity of the last two seasons and once again returned the show to the message of meaning of love and redemption. I was so happy they were able to do this - just to wrap it all properly and give both main characters a ray of hope for a better future. Without that scene ( and Buffy's final radiant smile at the closing) the show would have ended on a note of hopelessness and submission to fate.

And for Buffy-Spike closure scene - it also would have been incomplete without Angel's previous appearance , which put all things into the right perspective and made a perfect start up point for Spike's transition out of the Buffy series and into AtS. Same goes with Cordelia - the kiss between Buffy and Angel was important to put a closure on the relationship that was never meant to be and to make Cordy's final appearance in the AtS S5 a poignantly radiant release of a caged spirit - and still beautiful reminder of their perfect friendship.

But that kiss wasn't included to add closure, but to add hope or a possibility for them to be together again someday as said by Joss Whedon on the commentary.
So I don't see how that kiss was important for Angel's relationship with Cordelia, or Buffy's relationship with Spike. If thats what Joss intended.

Oh, by the relationship that was never meant to be I meant Cordelia/Angel. That's what in a nutshell Angel tells Cordy in You are welcome. So, these two kisses are very important consecutively. The Chosen kiss acknowledges that Buffy and Angel are never over - the You are Welcome kiss acknowledges that the wounds caused by Jasmine's meddling have healed and what is left as a quintessence of that relationship is a memory of a beautiful friendship.

So I don't see how that kiss was important for Angel's relationship with Cordelia, or Buffy's relationship with Spike. If thats what Joss intended.

Without that kiss the 'No you don't but thanks for saying it' does not have much weight, neither is Spike sufficiently motivated to stay in L.A. after his resurrection.

I have NEVER, EVER, thought of those kisses in that manner. Especially the Angel, Cordy kiss. I always viewed that as a downer. Thank you for your post. You have enlightened me. 😉 and I'm going to watch "Your Welcome" now lol.

Cool 🙂.

Angel's return in the final two episodes is my favorite part of S7. I thought it wrapped things up, with hope for the future, brilliantly while at the same time doing justice to Spike, who'd been Buffy's primary love interest for close to three full seasons.

Love that scene.

My problem was I always viewed that kiss as disrespectful to every single character. Angel/Cordy Buffy/Spike. I didn't understand why they would even do that if they both seemed to have moved on in their lives. But I get it now. I guess I'm one of those people who wanted Angel and Cordelia together so I was pretty upset at that kiss.

But I'm thankful for the interpretation of those scenes on this forum. Now I can appreciate those moments and not get pissed off. Especially the Angel Cordy kiss in which I always get depressed LOL.

Yeah, I understand that totally. I've always interpreted the final relationships with Angel/Buffy/Spike/Cordy in that light. It helps that Buffy and Angel together has always been a pairing I've loved.

I actually really like Buffy/Spike (particularly in S7) and Angel/Cordy. "You're Welcome" is one of my all time favorite episodes, and like was said above, I thought the final moments that Buffy and Angel had together really put Buffy/Spike and Angel/Cordy into their own place. They were their own things, not trying to replicate Buffy and Angel. I thought that was very well done.
