King in the North
So I know I'm a little late to the party for the S8 reread, but I decided to go through it again anyways. I've bought all the S8 library editions (which are really, really cool by the way, and highly recommended), and I was planning to go through them, two stories or so at a time, to see what everyone else thought. The first volume includes "The Long Way Home", a one-shot issue about an underground Slayer and the "No Future For You" arc.
The Long Way Home:
I really liked "The Long Way Home". Reading the season again, but without having to wait for the new volumes to be released, has really enhanced it. I found it a little difficult to follow initially, but the second time through has been really enjoyable so far. I picked up far more details I'd missed the first time.
I liked the military angle, and the initial settings up of Twilight (I haven't finished S8 yet, so I still have no real idea what the hell it is). Not to sold on skinless Warren, he kind of strikes me as a bad guy better off left dead, creatively I mean. Amy worked well as a bad guy though. I thought the plotting was laid out well, it flowed.
Buffy was really interesting as the lead, her sense of isolation. Kind of repetitive that her and Dawn aren't getting along...again...but the irony of Dawn literally becoming a giant when, as Xander says, Buffy has surrounded herself with dozens of new "sisters" was interesting. Looks like they're going to, finally, start exploring a Buffy/Xander relationship, which is cool. I like Renee a lot, and the chemistry between her and Xander. Xander really feels like he has a purpose, a place, this season, which is much improved over S7.
No Future For You:
This was another story I liked more the second time around. At first, I thought it was going to be yet another "is Faith evil?" story, and I wasn't that into it. But it was done really, really well. I liked seeing Giles being effectively removed from Buffy's side, and it being left open to the reader's interpretation as to why (personally, I think it has to do with Giles' actions towards Angel and Spike in AtS S5).
Genevieve was a very hateable villain, and seeing Faith's internal conflict at having to kill her was really interesting. I hope Team Buffy doesn't think Faith has gone off the reservation again (although I'm assuming that Giles would have filled them in on that). The ending to the arc was my favorite arc. Giles taking over as Faith's personal Watcher and the two of them seeking out girls in trouble. I like that a lot, and it feels like the perfect direction for Faith.
Anywhere But Here:
Just a one-shot, and while it was well done, it was confusing as hell. Seriously, no idea what the hell was happening. It was a character driven issue, and it was interesting to see Buffy and Willow finally talk (well, sort of at least). What was doubly interesting was that at the end, they were still apart. I like visions, prophecies and predictions in fiction when they're done well, and I'm totally into seeing the ones in this issue develop.
