I was about to reply that draining the inherent magic from magical creatures and people is a typically magical ability -- but then I remembered that in the last batch of interviews Chambliss was talking about "fading" of magic and Allie - about "changing" of magic. So I guess the writers intentionally leave a lot of wiggle room for season 9.

I very much like this idea of this new character being able to drain or absorb the magic force from vampires and other demons -

Also, in TOYL pt 1 Gunther brings in the "I don't trade in magics dear" perhaps this will be part of Willow's and this new character's transition arc for joining the events of TOYL and the Fray timeline.

Joss mentions a lot of the same stuff. The series will be grounded, insane stuff still will happen in Buffy's life but it will be more reflective of what people in their 20's go through, crossovers will happen eventually but after the two series have established themselves etc. Spuffy fans will also be happy to hear that Joss said Buffy and Spike will be spending a lot of time together and that those two are very fun together. Joss calls them "gold!"

- Chambliss was a fan of Joss, and it is a kind of amazing working for the guy that made him wanted to be a TV writer.
- He remembers getting a call from his agent saying that "Joss wants to meet you tomorrow, they are bringing over a copy of the Dollhouse pilot for you to read, it was one of those sureal moments when youI was, Oh God wait, this is actually happening!"
- He was thrilled to be in such a place with so many good writers Joss included, all those people that he was recognising their names from television.
- He remembers been told that they were going to do a Dollhouse one shot and thinking "I wish there could be more", and a couple of months they called him telling that DH wants to do a mini series.
- Some of the ideas for Dollhouse were the ones that they would have gone to if they had had the chance to go to the Epitaph timeline, but they also came up with some new stuff like introducing Trevor, a little boy. And they thought it would be good to tell a story about Alpha and all the personalities he's got in him and to reflect them through this little boy who tries to survive into this crazy world.
- Buffy and Dollhouse continue both in a unique way it's not like you can't touch certain elements but it is a continuation of the story. So he says that it is a wonderful thing that there is so much hunger for new stories. And in comics you can do all those things that you can't in a TV show, you can do anything that you think of.
- Season 9 is about Buffy being faced with her life. Before she always thought that she was gonna die and never grow up and have a life, and now all of those lay in front of her and she thinks, "what do I do". The things that every woman in her 20s thinks, who they are, what they are going to do. And it is connected nicely with the world and the magic fading and so things are becomming a lot more real for her.
- The season is not going to be epic but set in San Francisco, focused on Buffy and things that affect her life as opposed to Buffy trying to save the world. Of course there are still a lot of big bads and excitements, but it is focused on Buffy and her core group, the scoobie gang and a couple of new characters they are bringing in.
- He is asked if we have got a pic of the big bad in the very last issue of season 9 but he tries not to give away anything and he says that there is a big bad who may be pairing with somebody else we have seen before.
- He is asked if he is a very big fan of Spike and he says that he is. Then the interviewer tells him that the fanbase, especially Spike's, felt that season 8 didn't have enough of him and he agrees. Then he says that Spike is a big presence in season 9, a lot of people came down hard on Buffy for destroying the seed but Spike wasn't one of them. So in a lot of ways he is the person that she can turn to and the person that is always gonna be there for her.
- The interviewer says that it is gonna be like season 6, two people alone that can relate to each other and he waves his head in positive way like saying yes.
- He says that he loves the dynamic between Buffy and Spike in season 6 and hopefully he can find a way to explore some of the same things, where they are both right now, etc.



Fan Boy Comics interviews Jeorges Jeanty

- George tells the interviewer that he looks a lot like Evil Ed from Frightnight. The interviewer says that this is the first time someone tells him that. They had him confussed with Billie Jo Armstrong from Green Day. George says that he feels bad about saying that because the actor that did Evil Ed went to gay porn afterwards, and the interviewer astonished says, "Yes, no relation!"
- He says that he can say very little about season 9 and Andrew has said more than he could say. It comes out in September, they are in San Francisco, all of magic has been eliminated from earth, which makes some people very upset including witch Willow and Buffy pretty much becomes the slayer again. None of the potentials that became slayers have lost their powers but Buffy she's back to being what she is, the one. It's like she is saying "if you are a great cook, if you are a great driver, that is what you should be doing".
- The interviewer says that this was kind of established back in issue 40 when she received that book from Giles and George adds that this was so Joss. You never stop wondering if Joss still has it or if he has lost it, and then you read little things like that.
In issue 40 Buffy jumps to all the suportive characters and as writing structure Joss does it so well. And given it is the last issue in a way he sums up everything and where they are going and her relationship with them, which he thinks it is very important for season 9. In season 9 all of the relationships of Scoobies will really get tested.
- George has never minded the globe Buffy of season 8, because "if she can't be in Sunnydale, where else would you want Buffy? In Miami beach?" Then he says joking that there was another Hellmouth they suggested but that's why they have created Torchwood to take care of the hellmouths.
-Buffy ending up in San Francisco is more a matter of convenient than a matter of setting.
- With less supernatural elements left in the world one would assume that George draws less things like that. George replies, "You would think! But just because there is no more magic in the world doesn't mean that whatever is left in the world or got stucked in the world doesn't have it's own Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo".
- The interviewer says that he has heard a lot of fans saying he captures the likeness of the characters without doing promo photo coping. George replies "From your mouth to God's ears, that's the hardest thing in the book".
- The interviewer says that Jeanty has succeeded in that, George turns over to the camera and talks to the fans saying "thank you". Then the interviewer says that there was a great call asking him to come back to season 9 because they needed him. George jokes, "Was there any call? Because I didn't hear anything". He also hopes that Jo will also stick around because he has always loved to work with her, maybe a little bit of collaboration, and hopefully in season 9 we will see some of that.
- He's been asked if there is anything particular he uses to capture the likeness without making it look like a promo photo. George replies that he hates to destroy everything that the interviewer said, but he does uses photographs.
- Joss told him that he doesn't want it to be like a photo realistic thing. Joss wanted Buffy to look like Buffy and not necessarily like Sarah Michelle, something that Jeanty has said it before. Sarah is the face of Buffy, but it is the characteristics, the manners, all those little things that as an actress Sarah Michelle was amazing and created this icon of a character and that is what he is trying to capture.
- The interviewer says that George has done a fantastic thing with the vampire characters and he loves opening new issues and seeing Angel and Spike looking like they walked out of season 1 and haven't aged a day, especially comparing to Buffy who is an aged Buffy and doesn't look like season 1 Buffy. George adds that Joss said that the people who can age he wants them to age, but not with Spike and Angel obviously being vampires.
- The interviewer says that his biggest hope was that this would lead to some short of animated season 8 with the voices of the real actors that acted the roles. George replies that he would love to see it animated like that and he would loved to be the animator. But when he sees the motion comic he sees his work and his faults mostly, because he spends a month working on it and he can see things we can't, so he can't really have an objective opinion.
- He continues talking about the motion comic saying that they were probably trying it out to see if it would work, and if yes, they would do the rest of the season. It was lincenced through 21st Centurey Fox because DH doesn't own the property. So he says they can do whatever they want and continue season 8 in motion comics.
- He finishes asking fans to come back to season 9 because it is going to be more of a shock than season 8.

Well, as much as I love Spike, I think in season 8 Joss almost turned him into a saint - so a bit of regression in season 9 seem to be inevitable. 🙂

I agree, but I'm almost sure they won't go there. From what I understand from the inteview, it's gonna be based on beaufitul things, like in the beginning of season 6, before their relationship became destructive. Where they connect with pure respect for each other. If this will be the case, it's wonderful and not at all massive regression.

Kean agrees: If it's friendship Spuffy it will be lovely, it's destructive Spuffy it will be horrible. I have to think they will go with the former.

The Spuffy friendship we saw in the beginning of season 6, and then in season 7, was very beautiful. If they start having a little more, a real relationship that contains even non-destructive sex, I think that would be beautiful as well. I don't think any Spuffy would want them to be back to destructive relationship. But if it's out of love, why not?

Joss says it will be funny - and in season 6, there was a lot of funny moments between Buffy and Spike. Buffy's reaction to Spike's suggestion of "rough and tumble"; "A vampire with a soul? How lame is that?"; Spike "exercizing" in "Gone". Plus, kitten poker!!

Maybe Chambliss means *that* kind of season 6 type of interaction.

- He is asked what they are bringing in the comic con this year with the upcoming Whedon's comics. Allie says that they are doing a big Joss launch the next 3 months with Dollhouse in July, A&F in August and Buffy in September. They are picking up with season 9 where they stopped being with a lot of destruction and a lot of heart-ache and they are building from there.
- Part of the point of season 8 was to do a lot of things that they couldn't do on the TV show and go big in ways that the TV budget would never allow. But they realized that this took them away from what works best about the characters and what works best about Joss' writing. So they want to focus more on that now.
- Buffy will be rooted in San Francisco. She may leave, she may travel a little bit, but right now there are no plans for that, it's just a small story that will fit her there.
- Angel and Faith are based in London. Probably they are going to travel around England a little bit but they are going to be isolated. The locations that they are in are going to help to define the world that they live in and the tone of their stories is going to reflect the locations.
- London is going to be very dark, urban as opposed to Buffy that she's going to have a slight brighter environment. Of course there are going to be ups and downs in Buffy but they want what defines her character to be there.
- He is asked if there is a chance of doing a Buffy animated series with the voices of the actors doing an animated version of season 8. He replies that this would be a Fox thing if they want to do it. There was a Buffy animated for a while that didn't go anywhere and he was wondering if they could do another Buffy animated but he doesn't know if they can get back the cast together, or if the cast wants anymore to do that, i.e. Sarah now has a new TV show.
- He says that there is going to be a season 10, they know that far. They have talked about season 10 a little bit. They know enough about season 9 that not everybody dies and the world doesn't end, so they are going to do a season 10.
- He says that they are going to have one-shots and minies with the first ones coming out probably late next spring, but he is not ready to say anything yet. He adds that there will be side stories focused on main, important characters but not necessarily the core 4, well core 3 now.
- There are so many characters and so many of them left out at the end of season 8 but they can't just dive into all them of them right away. He knows that some of Angel's fans were disappointed when they figured out that not everyone is going to show up immediately in season 9. The problem was that it couldn't work to launch everybody back right away in season 9, so they will come up as the story calls for them.
- He says that this was exactly the problem with season 8, putting many characters in it just because they could.
- He says that we will be seing further Dollhouse stories after the one they have in July. They are not going to have a monthly series like Buffy but he thinks it is going to be more frequent that what they did with Serenity.
- He says Joss gives them notes and this is one of the reason that they are not doing more, because Joss can't. He would love to have a Serenity monthly series but they've got to do the stories that need to be told and not just get books out there as fast as they can.
- The way that Joss wants to do Buffy requires the book to be out there all the time, but what he wants to do with Serenity doesn't have that requirement or that need. Dollhouse on the other hand will be semi-regular. With Serenity they are just talking about what comes next but to do it more regularly they need more of Joss' attention and right now he is doing everything he can with Buffy, Angel and Dollhouse (and he also means being busy with the Avengers movie).
- He is asked if it should become a standard practice for cancelled shows to continue in comic forms when they have a big fanbase. He answers not necessarily adding that the previous day he met with someone about their TV show that ended and talked about the different directions they would like to take it. But he believes that not every show needs it even if it has the following it might not have the story and that should definetely be the deciding factor. The thing with Buffy is that they felt they had a lot more to say, the characters lived for Joss and they lived for a lot of use. So he believes that if the story is there and also the audience is there comic is a great art form to keep the stuff going.

A: I think Faith has matured more than anyone else in the Buffyverse, even Xander. She's the together one now...for now.
As for Angel I think he has just gotten more guilt ridden and tortured and feels he is toxic, pushing people away.

Q: How big a role will Giles play in the series?

A: Very big. Giles is the 3rd most important character in the story. We open #1 with a flashback starring Giles.

Q: Any chance for flash-back stories either Fang Gang or Angel Investigations? (Angel is lost without Cordy)

A: Never say never but not right now. And I'm sorry but I don't know who Fang Gang is? Angel & Spike?

Q: Will we see Faith vs Illyria at any point?

A: No Faith vs. Illyria plans. For Illyria you want to stay tuned to Joss' books. He called dibs quick! Guess he earned it. 😉

A: There will be some crossover of characters between the books. Harmony & Clem are in Angel & Faith #5.

A: A&F & Buffy are in the same universe with crossover elements but you can read each on their own

A: Honestly we will be keeping Angel & Buffy separate for most, maybe all of Season 9. They needed some space.

A: With access to Senior Partners cut off I imagine Wolfram & Hart is taking out ads on the back of buses.

A: Shanshu gets mentioned in arc 2. In what context? Wait and see!

Q: Which Buffyverse writer would you love to collaborate with on a Angel & Faith book?

A: Any, they all rule! Joss, of course. @JaneEspenson gave me an idea that is crucial to the whole season!

Q: re: your tweet about faith being together... for now. can you hint at what's going to derail our girl?

A: She falls 4 a handsome Greek from Mass who rejects her because he loves his wife. If Joss approves the story.

A: Xander is in Buffy. Darla would be flashbacks only. No Cordelia appearance yet but I dig her too.

A: I would want Joss to write the Buffy/Angel reunion.

Q: When will we see this big idea that @JaneEspenson handed you? Is this that huge twist you mentioned before?

A: Roughly arc 4 but it informs everything.

Q: Will Mayor Richard Wilkins be making an appearance? 😉 I just dig that guy.

A: Me too. But no. However arc 2 is called "Daddy"

Q: Does Kate the cop (or ex-cop) appear in the story?

A: No Kate plans but we Law & Order alums gotta stick together. Would like to write her at some point.

Q: Beside all the redemption path, family etc... Will there be some humor in S9 ?

A: Issue #5 will hopefully be funny. Humor has always been part of Angel.

Q: If your still answering, will characters from the IDW run like Beta Goerge (the fish) be appearing, can they?

A: No IDW characters. Mostly because the cast is staying fairly pared down in general.

I like this, sounds very true to the series.

As for Angel I think he has just gotten more guilt ridden and tortured and feels he is toxic, pushing people away.

I've watched all Buffy & Angel eps & read 1st 6 volumes of After The Fall

I am glad to hear that.

I know I sound negative in my comments, but after season 8 I'm viewing all newcomers to the Buffyverse with a little bit of skepticism LOL.

Chambliss Slays with Dark Horse's "Buffy Season 9"

More than eight years after its final episode aired on television, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and its spinoff series "Angel" continue to inspire a large, passionate fan base. In 2007, series creator Joss Whedon and Dark Horse Comics launched a canonical continuation of the series in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8," a forty-issue series that concluded in January 2011. In September, Buffy returns for "Season 9," this time co-written by Whedon and Andrew Chambliss, with "Season 8" artist Georges Jeanty returning for the new series. Beyond that, Dark Horse is also publishing "Angel & Faith," set in the same universe and beginning in August.

Both "Buffy Season 9" and "Angel & Faith" spin directly out of the events of "Buffy Season 8," which saw Buffy, Xander, Willow and Dawn confronting a mysterious, masked villain calling himself Twilight, as Giles and Faith worked behind the scenes to discover and undermine the Big Bad's plans. Twilight was ultimately revealed as Angel, who had discovered a new, peaceful universe and set events in motions that would allow him and Buffy to live there happily ever after.

Things are never so simple, however, and Buffy returned to our plane of existence to stave off a demon invasion. The sentient universe possessed Angel, leading to a showdown between the former lovers in which Giles was killed and a mystical seed -- the key to all magic in the universe -- was destroyed. Free of Twilight's influence, Angel was left catatonic and Buffy struggled to pick up the pieces of her life by starting anew in San Francisco.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8" ended with Buffy in a lonely place, as her decision to save the world by banishing magic from this plane of existence has alienated her friends and turned the army of former Slayers against her. Add to this the death of Giles at the hands of Twilight-possessed Angel and it would seem Buffy has few friends left. But, Chambliss told CBR News, things are not all bleak in the new series. "Buffy starts the season in a better place than where we left her at the end of 'Season 8,'" the writer said. "She's settled into her life in San Francisco, moved off Xander and Dawn's couch and is finally entertaining the notion of a life that doesn't involve facing the complete destruction of the world. It's the first time she's actually thinking about her future because, guess what, she didn't die saving civilization.

"There's still the fallout from the destruction of the seed to deal with and the whole notion that the world is a dimmer place without magic in it. And a lot people are still angry about the decision she made to destroy it," Chambliss continued. "This fallout is going to lead to one of the storylines that kicks off the season and we'll get to see some interesting side effects to the destruction of the seed that people might not have anticipated."

With the Slayer armada gone and the comic's renewed emphasis on slaying vampires, "Season 9" looks to have a stripped-down, back to basics approach as Buffy establishes her new life. "Joss really wanted to think about 'Season 9' in the way that he approached the TV show -- smaller stories that focused on Buffy and the core group of characters," Chambliss said. "Instead of Buffy being focused on saving the world, this season is really going to be about how she starts to grow up, sees herself as an adult and balances all that with being a Slayer. She's going to make a lot of mistakes along the way, because A) it's fun and B) what twenty-something sails through life without messing up every once in a while? Fortunately, most of us don't have to deal with vampires and demons while we're patching up our mistakes."

Chambliss also confirmed that the new series will feature the core "Scoobies" gang. "'Season 9' is definitely going to focus heavily on Buffy, Willow, Xander and Dawn. It's also safe to say that there's going to be a fair amount of Spike in the season -- writing Spike is fun, so I am digging that," he said. "There will be some new characters popping up fairly early in the season, a couple of them will actually be in the first issue. Buffy's also going to end up with some roomies, 'cause what twenty-something doesn't have to put up with at least one crazy roommate at one time or another? But again, the idea is to keep the core group small in that 'back to basics' approach. The season will definitely feel like Buffy and the Scoobies are back together again."

With Buffy reestablishing herself in San Francisco, Chambliss said that this real-world setting -- as opposed to her original stomping grounds in the fictional Sunnydale -- will influence the direction of some story elements. "There are a lot of cool opportunities that come out of Buffy living in a real city. For instance, the SFPD. Thanks to Harmony and the reality craze, they now know about vampires, so we get to play around with the idea of how Buffy operates in a city where the cops know about vampires and may be more sympathetic to them than to a 'vigilante' slayer," the writer said. "I love that we're in a real city, because one of the undercurrents of the season is that Buffy's life is becoming a bit more grounded and real since magic doesn't exist."

While understandably reluctant to give too many details about "Season 9's" over-arcing story, Chambliss did suggest some of the major themes for the new series. "I can tell you that emotionally, the season will be very much about Buffy questioning what she's going to do with her life. Without magic in the world, everything's going to seem a little bit grittier and real for Buffy. On a plot level, I can say that this season will very much be about what Buffy does best -- which is slaying vampires, but with some fun twists on it because the seed no longer exists. I'm tempted to say more, but I'd rather leave all the fun surprises for the season."

"Buffy" is now running concurrently with "Angel & Faith," though Chambliss said there are no direct crossovers planned at present. "However, "there's definitely going to be overlap, especially with the supporting characters. They'll definitely be some who end up moving from one title to another," he said. "The destruction of the seed is going to affect both worlds in the same way. Basically, both titles exist in the same universe and story continuity, but we're building self-contained arcs so you won't have to read 'Buffy' to understand 'Angel & Faith,' and vice versa (though why wouldn't people want to read both?!)."

Unlike "Season 8," which featured a rotating cast of writers, the current plan is for Chambliss and Whedon to be writing the majority of "Season 9," Chambliss said, though there may be guest creators along the way. "The plan is for Joss and me to write as much of the season as possible. We've broken out the 25 issue arc and plan to either write or co-write most of the issues," Chambliss said. "That doesn't mean other 'Buffy' alumni won't be involved. We're going to have a couple writers jump in to do some stand-alones. Right now, it looks like Jane Espenson and Drew Greenberg will co-write a two issue arc a little bit down the line -- both writers and people I love -- so, yay! Double-yay, actually."

Chambliss, a seasoned television writer on series like "Vampire Diaries," recently saw his first comic published, "Dollhouse" #1 -- continuing from the Whedon TV series for which he was also a writer. "I had a blast revisiting the Dollhouse. Jed [Whedon], Mo [Tancharoen] and I loved every minute of working on that show, so we were glad that we could fill in some of the blanks in the 'Epitaphs' timeline," Chambliss said. "It was also my first full-fledged experience writing comic books, and I couldn't have asked for better people to work with than my editors, Scott [Allie] and Sierra [Hahn]. They really helped me make the leap from thinking about writing in terms of TV to thinking about it in terms of comics.

"I'd definitely love to continue writing 'Dollhouse' comics," the writer continued. "There are a bunch of stories I'd like to explore that we never had the chance to do on the show -- Dominic in the Attic, Topher's mental disintegration, what happened inside the Dollhouse during the robo-call attacks. Right now the deciding factor is time, which neither Jed, Mo, or I have much of. But it's 'Dollhouse,' which the three of us feel a very close connection to, so hopefully we'll be able to work something out. It's just too much fun not to."

[MENTION=6758]white avenger[/MENTION] agrees: If you seriously don't know, "the black private dick who's a sex machine to all the chicks" was Private Investigator John Shaft, played by Richard Roundtree in the late '60's and reprised by Samual Jackson a few years ago.

Guess it was a bit before your time. If you're ever curious, the first movie, "Shaft," was pretty good, though somewhat violent for gentler sensitivities. I didn't care for either of the sequels, and Samuel Jackson's version (actually, he played the original Shaft's nephew and namesake, so it couldn't be seen as a sequel, especially when Roundtree reprised his role as the "real" Shaft)
