I seriously dislike the fact that Giles was killed to leave his possessions to Faith, Angel's caretaker, and as a new mean to tell the never seen Ripper stories.

I believe we are not supposed to 'like it'. This is the drama part. Same as we were not supposed to like Joyce dying or Tara being shot to be replaced by Kennedy, etc.

You know, I'm always fascinated when writers rewrite the initial concept for different characters.

Sometimes it works - "Numero Cinco" was initially Jeffrey Bell's concept for "The X-Files". Sometimes... not so much. We'll see.

(I wonder if Spike's having a ship is a hint that Joss plans to tell some "Firefly" stories using Spike instead of Mal). {/offtopic}

"Fray" artist Karl Moline returns to the Buffyverse in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9" #5

Karl Moline, the artist perhaps best known for his role in bringing Joss Whedon’s future Slayer "Fray" to life, returns to the Buffyverse with a tale of prophetic dreams and friendships on the edge of breaking. Moline, who also illustrated the "Time of Your Life" arc and a Willow one-shot during "Buffy Season 8" and more recently provided art for "BPRD: The Dead Remembered," joins series writer Andrew Chambliss for a single-issue story "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 9" #5, coming in January from Dark Horse.

Following the events of Season 8, magic has been banished from the world and decisions that Buffy took to save the world have alienated her from the Slayer army and, more significantly, from her closest friends. In the early episodes of Season 9, Buffy has established herself in a new environment -- San Francisco -- and resumed patrolling for vampires, a role which has drawn increased scrutiny now that the bloodsuckers are revered as near-celebrities thanks to Harmony’s reality television program. Meanwhile, a new player called Severin is on the scene, who seems to kill vampires by reverting them to human form -- dead rather than undead.

Comic Book Resources spoke with Karl Moline about his latest engagement in Buffy’s world, as well as a look back at his contributions to the Slayer mythos.

Looking back to his work on "Fray," Moline said he worked with Whedon to create a future city based on a logical progression of architectural design and societal progress. "When I started working on the look of Fray's world, I remember Joss describing a desolate dirty future landscape, where all of the major cities in the world had grown up and out, becoming impossibly high and connecting with other cities, forming major mega-tropolises. I think he cited 'Blade Runner' as a specific source of inspiration," Moline told CBR. "I started there, and while there was some really interesting architecture in the film, a lot of the look of the movie comes from these very vague, hazy, smoggy shots where the breadth of civilization is suggested by lights alone. I found myself with only a little reference and making up the rest. So I just tried to put myself into the shoes of the city designers. If I were trying to expand a city without knocking down all of the existing buildings, how would I build? I found myself trying to create layers of architecture that became more technologically advanced as I moved vertically and I tried to tie all of the buildings together with walkways, etc., to lend structural support and keep them from all falling down."

Character design in "Fray" was also accomplished with Whedon's direct input, though Moline said there was even more discussion in this regard -- particularly with regard to the heroine's appearance. "With Fray it was more of a back and forth, collaborative effort. Joss started with a description of a tough as nails late teen who was both beautiful and modestly built. More of an athlete than a supermodel, as most comic heroines tend to be," the artist said. "I would supply some designs and he would come back with the qualities he liked or didn't and I would re-adjust again. After a few rounds, we had the beginning of the character, but truthfully, that initial jumping off point is a far cry from where she ended up. As I got to know her better and as my own talent evolved, so did she.

"As for Harth and Erin, they were just the initial impressions I had when I was presented with the characters," Moline added, referring to Fray's twin-brother-turned-vampire and the twins' older sister, respectively. "They popped in my head that way and that's how I drew them. I have come to realize that Harth pretty much looked exactly like me. I didn't mean for him to but that's how it is when you use yourself for a model long enough. I even wore those signature glasses for a while, years later.

After the "Fray" miniseries, Moline returned to the present-day Buffyverse in Season 8's "Time of Your Life" story arc, which also saw Buffy navigating Fray's future timeline and butting heads with the far-flung Slayer. CBR asked Moline whether the five-plus years that elapsed between the two assignments had changed his perception of what Fray's future should hold. "My ideas about the world hadn't really changed at all. I had longer to think things through and I had spent a bunch of years working on 'Route 666' for CrossGen Comics, which was based in 1960s America, so a lot of that design stuff had worked its way into the new Fray stories," he said. As to whether it was fulfilling to work with Buffy in the future environment he had created, Moline said, "I think I would enjoy drawing anybody or anything in that environment -- it's basically a living, breathing character all by itself and its personality is as wide and varied as my own."

Although he now has a full "Buffy" arc under his belt, as well as Willow and Riley one-shots plus shorts starring the vacuous vampire Harmony for "Dark Horse Presents" (not to mention non-Slayer titles like the aforementioned "Route 666," "BPRD" and more), Moline said that Fray remains his most requested sketch. "I think Joss did such a good job infusing her with class and sass that everyone wants to know her or be her," the artist said of the character's appeal. "Everyone who reads that book falls in love, me included, the same way they do for Joss' other characters. Basically we're all just falling in love with the man himself. I think there's a ton of his own heart in each story he creates."

Like his one-shots "Riley" and "Willow" during Season 8, Moline will be lending his skills to a one-issue story in "Buffy Season 9" #5. Moline told CBR that these shorter stories centered on a specific character allow him to "switch gears and learn someone new." "The way they look, the way they carry themselves is always very specific and figuring that stuff out is scary and fun at the same time," he said. "It's like going to a new school or working at a new job. The first few weeks are full of brand new emotions and experiences and your senses are all on high alert trying to take it all in. Willow was a little different since I had some time to play with that character in the 'Buffy' books and had already come to know and love her. I really enjoy drawing her as her face is such an interesting blend of awkward and beautiful simultaneously."

Buffy's environment and cast has changed a bit since "Time of Your Life" with the army of Slayers disbanded and even the core Scoobies keeping their distance from the series' lead. Though Season 9 has already introduced several new characters, such as Buffy's roommates and the mysterious un-vampirizing Severin, Moline said he's on more familiar ground for his issue and "only worked with the new characters long enough to exchange pleasantries." "My issue focuses more on Buffy and Willow," he said. The changed environs, however, did take some getting used to. "San Francisco is a really pretty city, very charismatic and very difficult to draw," Moline said. "With all of the immense hills, perspective drawing is a nightmare. I think with more time to get the feel of it, I could really come to love it, though. The small amount of exposure I had was enough to make me want to visit, at least."

Moline was coy about giving away details to issue #5's story, which follows the conclusion of Season 9's first arc, but teased that, "like every good story, nothing will ever be the same again." The story finds Buffy experiencing apparently prophetic dreams and visions that seem to suggest the magic-less world will soon grow even darker. "I actually feel very lucky that I was the one who got to draw this issue, as I think it will be a landmark in years to come," Moline told CBR.

With prophetic dreams suggesting forward-looking theme and Moline being so strongly associated with Fray, CBR News asked whether fans might expect the future Slayer to appear. "All I can say is that you should definitely expect the unexpected," the artist said. "There is a long-lost Slayer who comes back to say nothing at all, and Buffy's life will change forever.

"Cryptic enough? Good. I hope you enjoy it. I know I did."

Nikki's dead. But hey, they could come up with a retcon that Spike sired her.

The issue is supposed to hark back to S8 #5 and the lost slayer may be that decoy Buffy and the fairies kept her alive underground

Hmmm, that scenario didn't occur to me. It does make sense - by bringing her back Joss could open a big can of worms, and he loves doing that. 🙂

Decoy's reappearance could make Buffy rethink her actions as a general.

As to Nikki - I think it's pretty possible to insert her into Buffy's slayer dream. She may show her some mcguffin, like the one in "Get It Done" - something to do with the restoration of the Seed. The dream will send Buffy on a quest to find it in real world. So she'll visit Wood to find out more about it.

At least that's what I expect from future issues. Of course I may be wrong.
 
Angel and Faith #5 review

Angel and Faith have had to deal with a lot of problems as of late: Resurrecting Giles, dealing with the changing nature of supernatural creatures, waiting and watching to see if Angel will turn evil once again. However, even they can take time out to help their friends, right? Or, two beings that have latched onto Angel against his wishes. Clem and Harmony have come for a visit! Best Friends Forever!

I am always amused at Harmony's antics, but the way she came onto the scene this time might be my favorite. She's carrying around a sex tape of her and some guy she sired. Now, she's being blackmailed because of it. Seeing the leader of Reform Vampirism, whose lead platform is not to sire anymore, doing exactly that would look bad for her image. Poor Harmony, what's she to do? Well, go straight to her old boss of course.

And Clem is his usual sweet self, being Harmony's go-to guy, helping her with her appointments, her career, and even her dogs. People often underestimate Clem because of his looks and his demeanor, but he proves that looks can be deceiving. He can take out two bad guys without the use of hands. That takes some talent!

With great characters from the past, it should have been a fun romp. As much as I wanted to like this issue, I couldn't. I felt like the story dragged on without any direction. Yes, blackmail is wrong and Angel is trying to help, but in the end I found I just didn't care enough to get invested. That is, until the twist at the end. And it wasn't a vindictive "I'm doing this because I hate you" but the blackmail was happening for understandable reasons. I can't fault them for their actions.

This was a filler issue, but a sweet one with beloved characters from the past. I guess we need that once in a while, considering the heaviness of the Angel and Faith storyline.

Buffy looks like a hologram in Andrew's squad command. Ha, ha. Andrew was seen working on a mechanical arm while listening to some loud music. Did Simone lost an arm and needs prosthetic?

A Zompire mob is in full effect and Buffy, with a little (very little) help from Xander and Dawn, is trying to lessen the mob as best she can. She thinks she succeeds only to find out that she has failed miserably. However, all was for naught, she's just dreaming. Buffy's dreams, always vivid and a bit confusing are no different this time around. As she attempts to figure out what they mean she enlists Willow's help. The dreams (references to the first Slayer, season 8 and Disney) finally become clear(ish) and it seems that the magic conundrum is on the verge of being resolved (no, they don't learn complicated card tricks). Willow must take her own path and as Buffy's roommates are questioning whether they can all continue living together because of Buffy's dangerous slaying, Buffy's world is positively turned upside down!

This issue has the potential to set up some very interesting and very important verse changing storylines (if the big "whoa" moments are indeed real and not part of a dream or something along those lines). The dialog and art are very good and the cover is one of my favorites so far! I didn't know how to feel about this issue when I finished reading it but as it ruminated for a while I realized I really liked it and I am super excited to see where it is going to take us. Everything is very good, albeit a little "wha?" inducing, but ultimately a strong issue.

When I was in grade school I used to go to my grandmother's house a lot. I would wind up there after school when I was too young to hang out around the school where my mom was teaching after-school. It was great, she always treated me like a little prince anything and everything I liked was always at my disposal, but I also remember her need to watch her "stories". General Hospital was, I think, her favorite. I remember being so unbelievably bored when she had that on just waiting for my chance to turn on cartoons. I remember promising myself that I would never care about stupid stuff like that.

Well friends January 11th's Buffy has shown me that I was fooling myself if I thought I didn't have stories of my own. Buffy was a soap opera as a tv show and has definitely remained one in comic book form. The slayer army, Xander's inability to have a girlfriend that doesn't get killed, Dawn's crazy love life, Willow losing her powers, face it fans this is a soap. So obviously I must hate it, right? Well no lately I've been noticing the comic books I really enjoy are definitely action packed and super-heroy but they all have very character driven plots. X-Factor, X-Force, iZombie, Irredeemable, Animal Man I could go on and on.

I do have to admit that the plot had gotten a little stale towards the end of Season 8. What with the whole "Big Bad" named the same as that annoying sparkly vampire series. Also the deaths not only of Giles but of all magic as well. It had gotten depressing and I was kind of reading the title out of habit, waiting for the plot to turn.

Well wait no longer fans of the Buffyverse! It finally seems like our heroes are getting back to just that, being heroes! Last months finale to the "Freefall" four parter was a good issue, chock full of action and drama (as well as a cool cameo by Spike) but it left me wondering where they would go next. This new issue really felt like a return to the show, there was slayer lore, Buffy getting help from a "scooby" or two and some really huge reveals. No the magic has not returned to the world but our heroine is finally working on it.

Buffy's world has always been a little angsty and emo-ish and the start of Season 9 wasn't much different. A lot of hand wringing and it's all my faulting. Now it seems that Buffy has been punched in the gut and told to woman up! As well as stumbling across a clue to finding out just how, if possible, to undue what she's done. And that big reveal I mentioned? Definitely big. I'm really looking forward to seeing just what Joss and the crew have cooked up for us this time. I just hope those dark kids will be quiet while I'm enjoying my stories.

"People are gonna assume this is a prank or a fake cover, but it's not. She really does get her arm torn off by a zompire in the middle of a big battle involving Spike and Dowling. It's not a dream, unlike much of the action in Buffy #5. Why show it on the cover? It gets to be a drag saving all the juiciest stuff for the insides, and we think that it'll still have some surprise impact when it happens."

Wow, okay so bomb-dropping issue and again incredibly difficult to review without too many spoilers. What I can do is set you guys up with a fairly decent overview without any direct explanations.

Issue #5, beautifully guest-penciled by Fray artist Karl Moline, is without a doubt the most feminine issue to date. It begins with Buffy finding herself facing some troubling Slayer issues within herself concerning things she can’t fully understand. As such she turns to Willow for help and they have what starts out as a heart-warming girls night as Willow tries to help Buffy reach inside herself to find the answers she seeks. The answers she finds are even bigger than herself.

Not only that, but Buffy finds herself with even more questions at the end of her and Willow’s evening, questions that as Buffy starts to answer them by the end of this issue leave us with more questions than we could ever imagine going into it. This one’s a game changer folks, BIG time.

Not sure what this means for the series. I was enjoying this series so much because I found it massively relatable as a 20-something. Where Buffy’s going in this next chapter is a stage I can’t cross yet and worry about Buffy crossing on her own when she has so many other issues in her life. Seed troubles, villain troubles, and perhaps most troubling serious financial troubles only aided by something else that happens as a mere footnote in this issue. It’ll be interesting to see how the writing staff handles something that ends up with most people using the various and kind government funded programs average Americans in her situation typically find themselves using.

Like I said, this issue is about women… and this is the worst possible time in a woman’s life to be alone. Not to mention… well, knowing the Whedonverse, it’s probably going to bring about the next apocalypse.

Revelations on the effect of Severin's power on Spike? Willow discussing Spike with Buffy? Kinda fits in with the 'girly' theme--you know, boy talk.
