Season 9

Frankly, whenever Joss does deciede to stop working on the Buffy comic, I would be fine with them giving the offical comic an end and start up a non canon comic series again. Start from the beginning again and work their way up.
I'm not sure I was clear on what I was saying.

I believe that at the end of this, the "Buffyverse" will be given to the fans to do with as they like. There will be no "c" word.

If your 'thing' is to have Buffy shacking up with dozens of vampy cats, reproduce by mitosis, and invent warp drive to explore the galaxy then that's what she'll "remember" in the morning. And it will be just as valid as anything else.

Do you see? A gift. The Buffyverse will be yours to play with as you see fit. 'Ship wars? Rendered meaningless.
Old Buffy comics and novels? All good.

Meanwhile, Mr. Whedon can revisit his initial concept of Buffy and explore other angles; everyone is happy. No one gets a "c" answer, but everyone can have it 'their way'.

* The utter weirdness of many Buffy and Angel moments on tv used to make me crazy. Like, "WTF were they smoking when they wrote this?" type crazy.

From the smallest things like 3 demons can say some mumbo-jumbo, hurl themselves into the Hellmouth with the 'Word' of Valios (a necklace? Seriously?) and the Apocalypse starts. Nice. And they know this works how? Previous example? Did some other world end this way? And what a frickin' easy way to end it.

To... well top of my list used to be Jasmine. I mean, really...

There are just so many WTF? WTF?? WTF??? moments on both shows that season 8 is nothing more than "more of the same", just amped up to endgame status.

Until you realize that it's a madhouse, and it's not supposed to make complete sense. Then, it makes sense.

I mean as little offense as possible, but that pretentious enlightened rant is... wrong.

"Weirdness" and "not making sense" are not the same thing by any stretch of the imagination.

There is such a thing as "nonsense" as a genre/style, Whedon's Buffyverse does not fit the bill. Most fiction is weird by real world standards, and certainly all of genre fiction would fall into the category of strange compared to reality.

Nonsense on the other hand is when stories contradict themselves and/or don't adhere to their own logic. I don't know for certain, but I'd imagine if anyone Whedon respected called his stories nonsense he'd take it as an insult, as that's not his genre.

I'm not sure I was clear on what I was saying.

Fictional Canon does in fact mean something. To oversimplify the term, it means valid and true to the fictional characters.

What you're talking about is the fan-term fanon which is entirely different. Every fan can make up their mind regarding what tales they choose to believe. That doesn't negate the fictional canon being "valid"; and, it certainly does not render our debates "meaningless."

But... why would ANYONE want this? As fans, and assumed that since we're a part of this forum, heavily active in the fandom... why would the creator of a cult series want to "give away" the story like that? All the characters, plotlines, relationships, etc. would be publicly up for grabs? I would never want that.

I think Joss will just end it when he' ready. He seems very protective of his "things" lol.

Your sincerity is truly moving.

As for the rest of your 'comments'; an inspired twisting of what I said into something I didn't. Bravo.

Are you suggesting I'm saying 'Public Domain' or something like that? If so, then you misunderstood the point.

Then could you possibly clarify? You've replied to 3/3 (100%) of the responses to your post saying that we all misunderstood your point.

In my case, I directly quoted your unedited posts ??? And the bulk of my reply was comprised of the definitions of "Fictional Canon" and the "Nonsense" genre--two terms which you used in manners that were derogatory to the author and fan base.

To be honest, I'm a little concerned about a new season as I'm uncertain about what the the depth of Joss' involvement would be in its creation. From what I've read in the news, Joss is the primary candidate for directing/writing Marvel's new Avengers movie due out in 2012. I really can't see Joss taking on such a great undertaking and still being very involved in another season of Buffy comics. If he does wind up as Avengers' director, I'd be very surprised if he would be able to do much beyond sketch out a rough story of how he'd want the season to pan out, leaving it up to the writers to actually make the story, and then giving a final nod of approval of the final version. Even then I don't think he'd be very focused on it as he'd have roughly every Marvel fanboy's dream movie to occupy his time. Also, another reason I say this is that this movie is Marvel's huge pet project that they have been building towards for quite a few years now and I don't think they'd want the guy sitting in the director's chair to have a lot of side projects.

Not to be too much of a cynic but when I read that he might direct that movie, I also felt just a little bit that one of the reasons he made the season 8 comics was to certify his comic book credentials to improve his chances of getting the job. The Avengers movie has been in the works for a very long time so it definitely makes me think that a comic book fan like himself would want to try to take one of Marvel's core stories and bring it onto the silver screen.

You make a heck of a point, but I think you're underestimating Joss'... well, narcissism, hahaha.

While I'm kidding, there's a bit of truth there. When Joss handed Angel over to Fury & Bell in S5 so he could devote more time to his movies, comics, etc, Fury said Joss still came in every week and threw out whatever ideas they were working on that he didn't like or conflicted with his long-term vision.

Keep in mind Fury wrote the most Buffyverse episodes after Joss himself. Yet Joss didn't even trust him to direct his seemingly least favorite show without strong oversight.

I think he learned his lesson with Noxon on S6, in her own words "Joss had to come back after I ruined the show" lol
I can guarantee that Joss had no idea a directing job like this was in the cards when he started season 8 (five years ago). Marvel only decided to do an Avengers movie after the success of their recent movies, most of which came out after season 8 had already started.

Season 9 shouldn't be that much of a conflict for him. He already knows the basic story. He just needs to make an outline, have a "writers' room" meeting with the people who will be writing the issues, and let them have at it. He'll read the scripts when they're finished, and the completed issues, make any corrections he wants, and send it back.

I doubt he'd be actually scripting any of the early issues, but bear in mind that Season 9 won't start until mid-to-late 2011, and will run for probably 2 years after that (assuming they skip a month here and there). His directing job won't last that long, and he would probably be able to write the final arc, if he wanted to.

You guys make some good points and definitely help give me some higher hopes for season 9. One thing I've always respected about Joss is that he marches to the beat of his own drum and if he wants to play an active role in the comics than I'm sure he wouldn't let much get in his way.

As for whether or not Joss knew about the Avengers movie back when season 8 started, I can't say for certain what he knew but I know that I did. There wasn't anything concrete about it back then but as far back as the early 2000s I heard talk that Marvel was going to release a sequence of movies based on different Avengers heroes and then bring them all together for an Avengers movie. I'm not saying Joss's primary motivation for the comics was to land the directing job, nor am I saying he's had his sights set on directing the Avengers way back then, though I know that he loves comic books and he loves film and I'd be very surprised if he didn't want to direct a big-time comic book movie.

I think that Joss could totally pull off directing the Avengers and esstentially directing S9 of Buffy. He was doing three shows at once, writing Fray, doing other entertaiment things, wrote for marvel. And for majority of S8 he has been directing. He doesnt write every single issue, he gave out the overall plot, let the writers do what they wanted to do and he went over it and approved it. And Avengers would take up 6 months at most of his time, year tops. But once again he will probably write the beginning and ending arc of S9, leaving everything in the middle up to other people.
