In the opening scene of season seven, we have the bringers killing a potential slayer, right?
Does this mean that the first knows the slayer line as well? How can you know who a slayer is if the selection is just random from a whole group (thousands) of girls?
How do you tell the difference between a girl and a potential?

There is some marker of sorts.
In The film, they attribute this to a birthmark which one would assume is present on all potentials, however, this seemed to be dropped in the show BUT a marker of sorts is still present.
We know this because Potentials can and are detected.
We don't know exactly what this is, but we know its there, maybe its a small genetic marker tag that is placed on a particular blood group of girls that is supernatually passed to every potential and originally emanates from the First Slayer.
Maybe its something far more mystical.
But if Witches are able to locate potentials, then a being such as the First Evil that has armies at his call and eternities to execute plans, surely can.

If the Shadow Men created the First Slayer, and they became the Watchers, it stands to reason that they would have some method of identifying the Potentials, and possibly even be responsible in some way for who is actually Called. That would help to explain why the First Evil not only tried to destroy the Slayer line, but the Watchers as well.

There has to be some type of marker...because the Watcher's council starts training potentials with their Watcher. How else would they know?

and possibly even be responsible in some way for who is actually Called.
there's no evidence to suggest that the Watcher's had any control over which girl became the Slayer. they had the power to identify the Slayer and the many Potentials, of course. but i'm sure that, through the ages, there were Slayers Chosen who were not to Council's expectations. Nikki Wood could be one of these Slayers. We never find out if she had Robin before or after she became the Slayer. if it was before, then the Council definitely wouldn't want a mother as the Chosen One.
Kendra would have been a better Candidate for Slayer in the Council's eyes than Buffy...yet Kendra was overlooked and Buffy was Called. Kendra had to wait until Buffy died.

In the book Blackout, tho it may not be cannon, it is explained she had Robin before she became the slayer, and found out who she was the night her grandmother was killed by vampires. Her watcher found her then, and then she slayed for four years before being killed by Spike.

yes, but in the Tales of the Slayers story about Nikki's Crucimentium, they find out that she's pregnant with Robin on the night of the actual test.
There's never been any difinite word from Joss and Co. about this...so i guess it's up to each individual which story they believe.

To be perfectly honest, Nikki Woods story is given grander, and better, scope if she is pregnant while being the Slayer.

See, you could imagine her being a tad rebellious ala Faith(but not turning bad) and the pregnancy was a consequence of a midnight liason.

I know that Dawn in season 6 was Joss' attempts at young mothers, but honestly I kinda would have liked to see a story involving a baby in the young teen world....maybe have Anya get pregnant in season 6. Ohhh that would have SO made Xanders character choices more difficult and more believable.
