I have seen all the episodes and I can't find why they kept Andrew around.
Was he there to keep him safe? using him as leverage? how about a hostage?
And at the end, he lives and Anya (a fun respectable character) dies.

Apart from the storyteller eppy (which I found fun) he didn't seem to add much to the plot. Did I miss something like a line or a scene?

He was the first (excuse then pun) person known to have been influenced by the first. (By the first posing as warren getting him to kill warren)

They kept him around for info, then he wanted to help out and be a good guy!

I think they kept him more for comic releif than for plot reasons because xander wasnt really a bundle of luaghs fter the whole losing an eye incident.

i think they kept him around to keep him safe and to study(?) him...like the post above me said, he was the first person to be influenced by The First, so the gang wanted to know why he was so special, why The First picked Andrew instead of one of the others.

I think they kept Andrew mainly around to get some information and so he wouldn't run off or whatever. Though I think Buffy & the scoobies found him rather annoying after a while, asking stupid questions and trying to be good. He was there for comic relief I guess as well but I never found Andrew ever that funny, just annoying, hehe.

Xander is my type of funny guy, Andrew...well, he's just a character from the trio and who is a major geek, still. I'm not much for judging people but hey, he was that in the show so Im gonna call him that here too.

So yes, to answer your question...comic relief and for info. As for missing a scene or line in Storyteller, no you didn't, I don't think. It was just some random episode which some people seem to love, though I didn't because I don't like Andrew Wells.

i think they kept Andrew around because he was the first person to be influenced by the first and he did open that seal thing in the basement of the highschool,so they kind of needed him for information.plus they wanted to keep an eye on him to make sure he didnt do anything evil,if they were to let him go then with the first hanging around there was a seriously good chance that he would do something evil.anyway after a while Andrew wanted to stay there becuase he wanted to become a good guy and make up for all the bad things he has done, and he knew that he was a little bit safer with them protecting him than he was if he was somewhere else in Sunnydale.
the writers kept Andrew in it because they thought he was a funny character and because this season was quite dramatic and focused on loads of people dying they thought he could add some funny bits into it.
