So how did you seduce the unwilling to give Buffy a try?

I was given an ultimatum by my younger daughter that I had to watch the series in order to pay her back by forcing her to watch TOS as a young child (which she loves). I loved it - I became a rabid fan. So rabid my older daughter swore she would never watch the show, laughed at me (and not in the nice companionable way) made fun of the show - hated the very idea of the show.

Then, one fateful day, I convinced her to watch The Body - she turned to me and said that now she needed to know who these characters all are and we did an intense Buffy and Angel marathon! While she will not go public, she is a strong Buffy fan.

The Body does give away Joyce's death - but it is so hyper realistic and gut wrenching. As far as Dawn was concerned she assumed Buffy had a younger sister who would someday show up - and once season 5 came along she was puzzled as any newbie. Besides, there was no way she would have tolerated season one - she had to actually care about the characters to commit.

Me and my brother used to do the same, we'd do a trade off of shows. He'd have to watch Buffy, I'd have to watch the Simpsons.

Or if you wanna introduce it to a teenage girl, you just show her half naked Spike. I guaranty you that will work 😛 (yes, I was a hormonal teenager okay! Who isn't)

What do you mean by good Fuffy shows? I have no idea what 13 years old watch. My 12 year old niece loves Supernatural though. I didn't ask whether or not it was cause she thought the guys were hot though. I'm not ready for her to be into boys yet. lol.

Let's just say she would be far more interested in episodes with a Fuffy twist. My granddaughter watched Buffy with me when she was 9 - and we talked about a lot of issues that will come up in her life. I really think that if you wait until a kid is in their teens you have waited too long.

My younger daughter is bi - and has had a years long on again - off again relationship with her girlfriend who is obviously the love of her life. I made sure she had positive role models of all sexual orientations - she was pretty trans until after high school (people are seriously complex). Actually Willow and Tara would be good for Alex....hmmm. questioned answered. I forgot they were lesbians.

Fuffy twist? I going to assume you mean something where two girls hook up or something. Well I'm not a parent, so it's not my business really to decide what my nieces should know or not about life and boys. I'll leave that to my sister. lol.

So you're looking for shows that have positive lesbian role models? This is probably a question better suited for Blaze then. She's got more experience with those kinds of shows. Other than Orange is the New Black, which is not for kids, I don't know of any prominent gay/lesbian couples in shows. Willow and Tara are good examples though. So there's that.

Usually I just 'happen' to be watching a really good episode of Buffy when the person pops round.

I go 'oh, just wait a sec while I finish this last bit' and they have to sit and watch it with me... for the last 20 minutes or so. I've done this with 'Pangs', 'Hush' and a couple of the S5 episodes (Fool For Love, The Body) and its worked every time.
The person gets intrigued, laughs at a line of dialogue and asks 'what is this crap' (but more curious than anything) and then I tell them, maybe lend them Season 1 and 2 boxsets. Couple of weeks later they're fans. 🙂

With my niece it was even easier because I know what she likes- horror, comedy, teen slasher, that sort of thing. Buffy is a regular box-ticker but also much more.

In my experience people who get hooked on Buffy also eventually get hooked onto watching Angel, but not necessarily vice-versa.

When I saw this thread title I so cringed, and was like "Please say the BB have not stooped to this level"?😱 And thankfully it hadn't😀

The only person I have gotten into the show so far is my Mum. That's because living together at the time that she started watching it on the Sci-Fi Channel along with me. Think one of her first episodes was OMWF which at the time she was not so keen on (she's not much of a musical person, but having seen the episode more now she does like it). I think she got hooked more when Sci-Fi started showing them all the way through and then probably more so when we started to collect them on DVD. A friend of mine has recently said how he wants to give it a look because just because of how much I love it.

As for a young person think you need to catch them at a reasonably young age like 13 or 14 because if they get too close to their 20's and have not seen the show then I think there is more of a danger of them dismissing it as just a "girlie teenage show" and it might be harder to convince them to give it a try. For me I would sit them down in front of it and say "This is a show which means a lot to me, and I hope that over time it will mean a lot to you too. It may take some watching to get into, and some of your so-called friends might try and dismiss it as just a teenage girlie show, but don't listen this is a great piece of art! It will give you everything you could possibly want from a great TV show, you will experience every emotion, you will love the characters, you will recite the lines, you will live through them. With that being said shell we polish the first season off tonight because that is the weakest"😉

I grew up watching BtVS on the BBC. My older sister was much more into than me - I was more preoccupied with drinking and smoking and getting into trouble as a teenager. But it was always on in the evening, I'd fall asleep watching it after school (not out of boredom, just out of tiredness). Then I calmed down a little and began watching it in my own time, making my way through all the DVDs and obviously AtS, too.

I've been trying to get the Worser Half into Buffy since we've been together. He would just laugh and insult me for watching it when it was on. His whole problem with it, especially the early seasons, is that he thinks it's juvenile and stupid, and he can't stand the majority of the characters. So, I started him on AtS instead (because darker and more grown up blah blah), which he actually grew to really like, even though he missed the roots of the characters and the beginnings of their arcs (Angel, Cordelia, Wesley). He particularly enjoyed season 5 and Spike's arrival. SO, with that in mind, I continued to watch BtVS (currently on season 5). He loved all the Spike appearances in the early seasons and once Spike became a regular in season 4, the Worser Half really started to take an interest. So I guess that was the draw for him! Spike.

I was hoping this thread would be about something else. I cant say I have ever seduced anyone into watching the show. There are plenty of better options to seduce people to watch than Buffy.

Yea that's how my roommate feels. He's only seen a few scenes of Buffy, mostly from s2 and 3 and he just thinks its silly and romance drama. He's also a bit sexist when it comes to female superheros. Not sure if he would like Angel though. I don't think he's into vampires in general.

I guess it is silly, romance drama. But obviously much more than that too. I wonder if he'd seen scenes from seasons 5/6 he'd feel differently - definitely lacks in romance (of the 'first love, I can't live without you' variety), and season 6 is so serious (for the most part).

@bespangeled Have you seen Lost Girl? It's not as good as Buffy by any means but the main character is a bisexual succubus and it's a pretty good show once it gets going.

I do that but it seems to just scare them away. And my firstborn resents when I offer her!

I gave it a try but I just didn't get into it. Alex has been afraid to watch Buffy so far because of the monster aspects - I don't think Lost Girl will work for the same reason. But when the time comes I want her under the spell of Willow and Tara😀

The few people I have enticed into Buffy have been by the same method. I beg to watch one episode, they reluctantly agree, then admit it "wasnt too bad". This goes on for a little while, I watch episodes like Becoming part 1 and 2, Bad Girls, Hush, Restless, Triangle, OMWF, Conversations with Dead people, Touched etc. Eventually we start from the beginning.

Im up to s5 with my bf now.
