Selfless - Buffy's speech.

This is a shipper war waiting to happen! But all that aside, I like the last part of the speech. I felt the love-him-more-than-anything line was fan-service, and I agree with Viking about Buffy not possibly being able to know that. And I didn't agree with Buffy's decision to kill Anya that easily, without the benefit of the doubt. But the last part is great, I think, because it's very true. They yell at her for cutting herself off, and they even kick her out of the house, but the truth is, no one can lead like Buffy can lead. She was MEANT to make the law. While I agreed with Anya's speech about Buffy not being better, but being luckier, I still think Buffy's ultimately the one who has to take the initiative. And whether they like it or not, her friends look to her to do that. It can't be easy, either. As Faith so rightly said, "Everybody's looking to me, trusting me to lead them, and I've never felt so alone in my entire life."

(Please try not to just respond to the shipper comments in this post. That's not really what I want it to be about.)

So was it just fan service when she said she loved spike too then ;)
There's no difference. Well there is. She can't always allow herself feelings that we ordinary people can. She couldn't be with Angel because he would loose his soul. Her feelings are the same, but her choices are different. She has to think about the world, we don't.

Jumping into the conversation here, but Buffy's relationships were all meant to symbolize something. No, we don't have to consider the world, but there are people in our lives we have to think about. If our friends don't like the guy we're dating, that's an obstacle. If we have a child, a husband, a wife, etc, those are things to take into account. It's not the world at large, but we have to take into consideration things other than how much we love someone. We aren't generally selfish like that, even if we don't have the burden of being the Chosen One.

Angel's curse in an obstacle, in the same way Romeo and Juliet's families were obstacles. You can't always choose yourself, even if you're not a big, chosen hero. And of course, everything has to be bigger and grander for Buffy, since it's a television show and not real life.

good luck
Of course Buffy can't know how she'l always feel, in the future. But at that time thats how she felt, and she meant it. 🙂

I agree, just like I meant it when I told my first love I'd always love him. :)
I didn't say she lied, silly people. =P

I just don't think she can know that. For instance, Vikings said how much she loved her daughter. Didn't Angel have a moment in the Season 8 comics where he realized that no love he'd ever felt could compare to his love for Connor? Different kind of love, yes, but that's the point I'm trying to make. You can't ever know where your life will take you.

That's the point. I don't think Buffy meant she loves Angel more than her mom, or Willow, or Xander, or Dawn, or Giles... because we all know just how much they all mean to her in different ways and I can almost bank on it that if she had to give up Angel to keep one of them with her she'd do it in a heartbeat.

It's an entirely different type of love.

See, it wasn't about friends and family. Buffy was just letting Xander know that even though Anyas the biggest love of his life, she had to die. Just like Angels the biggest love of Buffys life, and he had to die.

Of course you can't know what is going to happen but in that moment Buffy hadn't experienced anything or anyone who wasn't family that compared to her love for Angel. That could change in the future but quite frankly amazing men had come into her life and she never felt as strongly for them as she felt for Angel, so I wouldn't be holding my breath for that person to come along.

Ah, I'm outnumbered! And I think I've said just about all I can say on the subject.

I never said what she said wasn't true in the moment. Only that feeling that way is no guarantee of her feelings in the future.

Several episodes later, her last words on the show were "I love you","Spike". Please don't tell me she was lying to Spike and speaking the truth about Angel.

Yeah but did she say "I love you more than anything in this life"? What Buffy said was "I loved him more than I will ever love anything in this life" it isn't her saying she will never love again but she will never love anyone like she loves Angel again.

We both argee that she loved Spike, what we disagree on is how she loves him. It's semantics. I'm not trying to take away from Spuffy here just talk about what she says about Angel.

Ok she will never love anyone like she loved Angel. Agree on that.

I agree. They are different kinds of love. But she loved Dawn, and Willow and Xander with different kind of love. And I think, I belive, that you know who your true love is. I belive people just know that things. Even if they don't end up with that person, I belive they'll know who their true love is, because sometimes this world is harsh, and doesn't give us what we want all the time.
