So what´s the deal here? The Faq clealry says "We do not allow posts selling items on the boards - that is not what they're for." But it seems one (at least) of the mods have given persmission and now we have a few threads. Personally I don´t care much either way but if we are allowed to sell items can we make a subforum (or what ever it´s called) in the "Buffy and Angel Collectibles" section so those threads are easier to find?

I don't like selling stuff threads personally, we are not ebay. If i wanna buy something i'll go to ebay or another auction or shop 🙂

I thought the FAQ section was confusing too, until a staff member said that it was okay to post selling threads. Apparently, there's a debate going on now, and they're going to change the rule into something less confusing.

As long as we sell Buffy-stuff and don't spam I gues we're okay.

Are there any rules about selling yourself on the Buffyboards? Cause I really need money and I've got a wicked tongue...

😉

*looking in my wallet* God dammit, why did I buy those comic books!?!
The reason you may have heard conflicting info is that we are currently talking about the issue but will make it clear once we have come to a decision so that you know what is going on 🙂

Oh and no...you can't sell yourself here!

Get yourself some popcorn, have a seat. Put your feet up. Uncle Nerd will explain the whole background history of this, so you can follow along at home.

A long, long time ago there was no Collectibles forum, but there was the law. No selling at BB. This one is necessary. I wish I could post you a link to an example of an old abandoned message board so you could see what happens when there are no spam rules. We're talking porn, and links to virus-laden sites. Nobody wants that, so there's a rule.

Also there's the twitchiness of Copyright holders. Technically resale of purchased items is legal. If it wasn't you wouldn't have used car lots, used bookstores, gargage sales, the used DVDs rack at Blockbuster. Nevertheless a lot of copyright holders don't like resale. They're lobbying for new laws which will say you don't actually own anything. It's more like you lease it. I'm not sure, but I think in places like Australia, some art is considered this way. I know companies like phone companies, and Microsoft want this.

In the background of all this site owners have to keep in mind the infamous DMCA site takedown request. All that's needed there is somebody to claim copyright ownership, and claim a violation has taken place. He doesn't even have to be right, and in some cases not even be the actual copyright holder. We're talking the site disappears for say 2 weeks while the legality is worked out. Nobody wants that.

Nevertheless back in the golden days, before the Collectibles forum a circumstance would come up such as an old time member would post something like wanting to sell a tiny section of his comic collection. Now me as mod, I'd look at that, and say what's the harm. He's been around forever, so it's not like he registered just to sell a couple comic books. Also the climate was such there wasn't a lot of interest in such things, so the thread would quickly sink to the bottom of the list then disappear. There wasn't going to be a sudden barrage of people wanting to resell fan items, or guests seeing resell was allowed, then signing up to sell their stuff.

Then came Bbay. This was a forum put here at BB where people could make trades, but not resell. This offered a little slack for people who wanted to move their memoribillia, or so it was thought. It never caught on though, so it was removed.

However there was still an interest in memoribillia. Fans still wanted to talk about what they had, and where to get more, so the Collectibles forum went up. This one did get traffic.

And here's where the problem presently lies. The old practice of allowing the odd, old-time member to post the odd post flogging some item he lost use for never adapted to the Collectibles new popularity. So now when such a post goes up it's seen as an endorsement in a popular forum of the practice of resale. People sign up just to sell stuff. If it continues a big chunk of that forum will be about the resale of fan items. And yes there are such forums elsewhere on the internet where such practice is allowed, and they get by. But are the problems of such places, and I suggest they exist (potential and actual), something BB wants to deal with.

And now the mods and administrator sit there scratching their collective heads, talking amongst each other, wondering what to do. Not to worry though, this is how puzzles are unpuzzled. What I mean is, as Faith said we're on it.

Wow. Go N4H. Way to answer.
You write very well.

*putting down the pocorn*

Seriously, write history-books that can be used in schools. Kids might actually learn something.

And I get the problem now. Hopefully it will work out. It's not good that the Collection-section is filled with items for sale/trade, because it's hard to find the threads ABOUT the collectibles, either I guess either ban selling or get them their own section.

Not wondering what do, discussing what is the best thing to do.

But until a change is made, everyone should still go by the rule, which is No selling on the boards...

I know I have absolutely NO say in this what so ever but to be honest, I think I would rather you shyed away from te selling.

There are SO many websites already dedicated to this that I don't see a need here.

I love coming here and the last thing I want to see is it getting over run with people wanting to sell something, even if it is Buffy related.

Well that's how the staff feel about it too, which is the reason behind the rule. Truth is, the odd post by someone who's cleaning out all their stuff and would rather pass them on to a fellow member doesn't bother me, so I would use my best judgement and let a few things slide. Problem is when people start to look at that and then decide to use the boards as a moneymaker. So it's really how to walk the line between being overly harsh on someone with a couple extra comics lying around, and keeping the board free of spam ads.

🙂

Well IF its just occasional clear outs would people mind holding onto them for a couple of months and if not, then have like a Summer Sale season or a Winter Sale season.
A week every few months when members can have a clear out then rest of the year, not allowed.

"Summer" sale! I love it!
I guess it's been decided that we don't get to sell, because my selling-thread was just deleted.

Is this confirmed now, no selling at all?

I have no say in this either, but there is an open thread (and it may be the stomach bug talking)but I have to agree with Al....on all his points.

And, now that I've become delirious I think I should go back and lay down until this annoying agreeing thing has gone away!

Here: have some feel better karma!
I vote a BIG FAT YES for the selling thread. I was going to suggest it as well as a custom figure thread.

WOW! The thread is still open and with me no longer delirious! Sadly, even with the deliriousness having past I thought I'd add a couple of things now that I can think straight.
Having my job on eBay for close to the last 10 years, I can say there are some SERIOUS pitfalls to selling on a forum, especially one like this where everyone is so "close" figuratively but far away physically. The age range hurts a bit too.
One issue being that it is NOT easy to ship things across the world. There are customs forms to fill out and lots of fun things that just aren't very.....fun.
There is also the "trust" factor involved. Do you mail the package before you get paid? What if they don't mail it when they get the money? How well do you know the people selling such things? Are the pictures the real pictures? What happens if it gets lost of snatched up by customs? Ebay and PayPal have some safety fall backs to these issues. But, does everyone here know to ship with delivery tracking, insurance and how to fill out a customs form properly? What about the rules of what you can and can't ship?
What happens if a sale happens and the package gets lost? Does it cause a giant rift in the boards between the people who believe the person who claims they mailed it and the people who are mad it never arrived?
At least in the US, I know that minors can't legally have PayPal accounts or enter into sales contracts. Does this lead to people trying to mail cash around the world? That's certainly not safe! I'm also not too keen on the idea of minors giving out their mailing addresses. That's just frightening. And how many minors have PO boxes just for such deliveries?

On a side note, one of the reasons I love this board is that the "whackos" are usually kept at bay. They can't post links for X amount of posts and to make that many posts they need to have a general knowledge of roughly 12 seasons of TV. If "whackos" come, there is little reason for them to hang around.
With a sales forum, there is more reasons for a "whacko" to hang out. More chances of them being able to "get" someone (in one way or another) and little recourse Buffy or anyone else can take to a deal gone wrong.
And even without "whackos" deals can go wrong in SO many ways. Items misworded so that the buyer thinks it's something that it's not. Items that break in shipping, get lost in shipping, a small nick or paint scuff or bend that makes the buyer upset because it wasn't mentioned or not shown as bad as it might be. Something the seller didn't think was a big deal or didn't even notice!

I have my 100% positive on eBay, but that's not without some MAJOR hoop jumping for a few people that put me OUT money to make them happy. And it's not been easy, even with the items being VERY well described (because I MAKE them and know everything about them) and brand new! Even trying to get your insurance money back from the post office from a lost or damaged package WITHIN the US takes weeks, if not months and can be virtually impossible across country lines. I lost a package to Canada once last year. It's still not been found other than it at one point HIT customs and the insurance money has still not been given to the buyer. I had to fork out my own money to pay her back and hope that ONE DAY after many calls to Canada that I will get reimbursed. And that was on a $30 shipping fee, TRACKED and INSURED package with all the customs forms filled out properly and me knowing to save all the data I might need if it got lost.

In theory, this all sounds very nice, but in actually making it worse, it sounds to me like a board nightmare.

If THAT happens, you just look like a BIG DORK who may or may not be some sort of strange terrorist. IF I knew anyone who would have done anything that stupid.....which I DO NOT! Thank you very much! *KONK* for Scobby!

Well I know there was a problem on AD years ago because someone (privately, not through anything on the main board) sold something and then never sent the product...
