I was looking at a member's profile page (not sure if you need to know who or not) and I clicked the "send message" link. All it did was take me to the bottom of her profile page.

Hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread but I wanted to ask a question in a similar vein:

Why are visitor messages turned off here? Most other forums allow you to write messages on their wall called VM's.

This question has been asked before, and I'm pretty sure we don't have them anymore because when we did have them, they created problems. Bullying, gossiping, stuff like that.

I've had a similar problem with the 'Send Message' but only when I've been using IE on another laptop. At the same time I've had issues with the drop drown menus from Member Community and the like. Are you missing those arrows too? I've put all those issues together as being due to the browser or dodgy connection.

As for VMs, they were basically being used for chats and stuff, which PMs are for, as opposed to a space for leaving comments about profiles.

It's a lot easier having a conversation with people through VM then it is to have to bother with PM's. Plus, it's actually there to have conversations. The link on the bottom of VM's is actually called "View Conversation". It's not that I'm worried about it or asking for it to be changed, I just find it odd that is this one of the only boards I'm on that doesn't have them turned on.

We have the chat for that. As I understand it, the VMs were being used to say really mean things about the respective user, so Darla disabled them.
VM's were turned off because people were using them as PM's and using them to have private conversations, not knowing, or not caring, that everyone who visited their page could see the conversations. They were using them to bad mouth and bully other people on the site, and therefore the staff decided that they should be turned off in an attempt to stop the bullying behavior.

As Lyri and Flannen have already said, we had VM's at one time. They can be a nice feature, but a) they caused too much problems on this site because people were using them to badmouth people and cause problems and b) it's really not that much more work to send a PM instead.

The question has been answered pretty much but in short, it is too difficult to monitor everyone's visitor messages, and bullying and general bad stuff was happening in them. Also there is no way to limit the number of them so when they are used as pm's they just burn up the server space.

And also, maybe this is a IE thing. I'll have some time thursday or so to look into that, but people have said upgrading to IE9 fixes it.
