Would anyone care to speculate on just exactly what the mysterious "attic" in Episode 4 might be? Obviously unpleasant, if going there is a form of punishment, but, beyond that, what image came to your mind when it was mentioned?

Well the word attic makes me think of a kind of storage place, maybe were doll are put in to a kind of sleep never to be used again. Or maybe experimented on to see what went wrong, or something.

I thought it was another word for getting killed. But now Im imagining an attic room with all people in big jars and they use the attic peoples body parts to repair broken dolls....

That's exactly what i thought it was
I think the attic is a place where troublesome dolls (and handlers!) are sent and kept comatose while the Dollhouse people try to figure out what to do about them.

I think we should think along those lines, yeah. The Dollhouse wouldn't go about killing them off for no reason, without figuring out what went wrong. They're smarter than that. Also, since they use people, it might be considered wasting perfectly usable bodies, to just let malfunctioning dolls go. No, I think they are kept on the Attic while the people from the Dollhouse try to figure out what to do next.

That's what I think too.
I always thought "the attic" was meant as a place to store dolls that are no longer useable or have gone wrong. Maybe its like a prison, there locked up forever in confined spaces never to see the light of the day. What ever it is, even from the name it doesn't sound like a nice place to go.

Someone (I'm forgetting now) said to someone something like "You'll be sent to the attic, or killed" so I got the impression they aren't the same thing. I'm going with the popular
place where they're sedated" theory lol

When I first heard it, it made me think of those storage places they held the robots on I,Robot. But, I doubt very seriously that that's how it is. It must tie into the Rossum Corp somehow...

Sierra's handler asked (I believe this is a direct quote): "Are you gonna kill me? Send me to the attic?" The question is, was he saying the two were different (Are you going to kill me OR send me to the attic) or synonymous (much like saying, "Are you gonna feed the dog? Soft or hard food?")

Originally I had thought the Attic was just another word for death. But now I'm starting to think not. I think it's just a place where the Dolls are locked away...permanently or just until their contract runs out, I don't know. (Though whether or not the contract holds up at all once the people sign it is still a mystery to me.) I don't imagine the Dolls up there being in a coma...that wouldn't be very dramatic. I picture them stumbling around, confused, hardly socialized, hardly talked to...it seems like with Dolls so defective that they've gone to the Attic, the Dollhouse wouldn't waste much more money on them to put them into a coma, etc.

It's very interesting to think about and I can't wait till we get the answers. 🙂

I read an interview with Fran (Topher) and he says the attic in a way is like a library of bodies or in a way storage.
I'll go look for a link for you guys.

What's annoying me about the attic is that, it was scary the first time they used it, then even more and mysterious, but now it's just like whoop-di-doo, the attic, you say it in EVERY episode. But I think it's like literally the attic of the dollhouse where the inactive dolls are placed.

Library? That makes me think that maybe those cassette things that Topher has with the personalities get filed and maybe that's the attic?

Ok here I give you an excerpt of the interview about the attic and it's source *Spoilers*

Will we hear about where these personalities, or “pieces of real people” as you said, are coming from?
What I know and what I can say is that there is a place in the Dollhouse called the Attic that stores failed Dolls and personalities. There’s like a whole warehouse where actual bodies are kept.

Bodies? Yikes.
Exactly. It’s like a library, so to speak. Where do we get them? I can’t say. They are real people.

But you know, there is one episode where a friend of someone working in the Dollhouse downloads his or her personality intentionally for the sake of maybe using it later. So that just goes to show that people can come and download their personalities and clearly go on existing as functional human beings too.
