Serenity by Itself.

So now that it's all history, and you can look back at both Firefly and Serenity, what do you think?

Do you need to see Firefly first before you see Serenity, or could it be enjoyed even if Firefly didn't exist? Is Firefly better after Serenity?

Personally I liked Firefly, but I didn't love it. After Serenity though I'm a mad fanatic about both.
 
I saw Serenity first, and I liked it, but it wasn't until I saw Firefly that I truly realized how great Serenity was, Now I am dieing to see Serenity to Fully appreciate it!!
 
I think Firefly with or without Serenity is brilliant; Joss' best work in any medium. I think Serenity without Firefly is a great action movie where a whole lotta ancillary stuff doesn't make much sense.

Together, they totally rock the casbah.
 
Hmm. I enjoyed Firefly, but wasn't super psyched and emotionally involved with it. Joss's work is mostly about personalities and relationships, and that usually takes quite a long while to work its way into my brain, heart...though that's always, without exception, what stays with me, makes me a loyal fanatic.

I'm thinking Joss is an acquired taste for a lot of people. It's almost like he's daring all the "regular" people of the world to be geeks, to just jump in and deal with it...just in terms of the comic book, pulp stuff he loves so much. I don't naturally take to cowboys and space operas, in general. And I thought I'd grown out of comics when I was twelve or so...

I really liked the movie, though I bet I loved it more cos of my familiarity with the characters and my built-in love for Joss's dialogue.

I thought that the movie was really sort of cathartic in a way that the season finales of Buffy and Angel could be at times. You had a dramatic emotional payoff"”sort of a semi-resolution of the themes in the show"”but didn't have to wait four or five seasons to see it.

Now I gotta watch the show again...
 
Did anyone think Serenity felt like a TV show when you were watching it? I sorta did, but I didn't really care. In fact, it felt right, sort of endearing.

I was reading this interesting Serenity thread on rottentomatoes.com"”all the posters seemed very bright, savvy"”seemed to be film students or filmmmakers themselves. They were going into all the technical, sort of, deficiencies. Flat interior lighting, conventional TV framing and shot composition, sequencing, etc...saying Joss is a better writer than director (most of them loved the movie, BTW).

I think that's true, but it was so much fun to see Joss allowed to branch out a little, artistically, ya know? Getting better technically, visually. His characters, for a sci-fi action film, are so well-drawn, worked out as individuals. Much better than what's typical for Hollywood these days...

It was a ton of backstory and plot to try to work out...probably too many threads for a non-Firefly person to completely make sense of...
 
i saw Firefly first, and def thought it helped when i (finally) saw Serenity...but my friend watch Serenity without seeing Firelfly, and she really liked it.
it wasn't until i let her borrow my DVD's of the show that she realized how great they both were.
i def think it helps seeing the show first, and finding out how they all met and got onboard Serenity, but as my friend proved, it's not absolutly essential to see Firefly first.
 
Ok I just watched an Add for Serenity on the 40 year old Vergion DVD, and I actually can't wait till the DVD comes out to watch it again having seen the series now!!
 
Actually, I watched Firefly first just to get a general knowlegde of Serenity.

I say it helps a bit.

Well, I know what you mean but I still felt Serenity was so different from Firefly that way, felt a lot more likea movie (well, obviously it is a movie but you know what I mean)..

I definitely liked Firefly a lot even before I saw Serenity, I loved it even.. But after Serenity it did become a lot better, the whole thing. However, even though I know a lot of people who saw Serenity first, and loved it, but I also really understand those who didn't love it. I mean you know so little about the characters, I don't think I would've loved it half as much hadn't I seen the show first...
 
i saw serenity first and loved it.
but then i got firefly for my xmas and loved that more.

however im glad i saw serenity first cos after firefly i was attatched to the characters. watching serenity again i was just thinking, "youre gonna die" 🙁

also bits of serenity make more sense now :0
