Serenity; The Movie - Discussion - (Spoilers)

I saw it a couple of weeks ago and its my new fave movie I mean it was absolutely superb you can so tell Joss wrote it.
 
I saw it yesterday, it was an early screening here in sweden since we haven't had the real première yet (it's in about two weeks). It was just so amazing, and it almost felt unreal, sitting there with an audience full of other fans, everyone was so excited.. I went there by myself though and I'm glad about that since I don't know anyone here that has seen Firefly, and I wouldn't want anyone to spoil my experience by not being as focused and excited as I was. Don't know what to say that hasn't already been said, but I just can't post this without saying: I love Joss!

Of course he is. He loves Firefly. I was supposed to see it with him, but I left the DVDs at his place and he couldn't keep himself from watching the whole show in like three days, hehe..
 
Okay, so I went to see Serenity today... it was a great movie!


... ... ... but... ... ... Sith wins hands down! (*ducks from rotten tomatoes*)


Somehow the whole gritty-thing it had going on and the starkly realistic and somewhat pessimistic tone and characters just made me feel less connected... especially since I'm very optimistic in nature. Moreover, at some points it was rather slow, which allowed me to realise I was in the cinema watching a movie, whereas with some other movies (SW3) it was too much of a rollercoaster to disconnect oneself from what was happening on the screen. Anyway, there was some potential in this movie which remained untapped. The whole thing could've become a lot more epic. The space battle ought to have been more elaborate (it was rather pale compared to the battle over Coruscant) and the importance of the supressed memories of River's should've been stressed more, because it seemed the Quest of the crew was lacking a clear goal, which was only revealed near the end.

I guess you were expecting a lot of disagreement so I hope you don't mind me saying that I disagree 100% (not gonna drain your karma though, cause it's a fair opinion).

I can't even compare SW3 and Serenity. There is no comparison. Star Wars has better effects, I'l' give it that. But to me this means nothing, because the action just feels meaningless to me. I mean we already knew what happened to each character, for me that took away all the suspense. And even putting that aside, there's very little time given to building up the characters. Padme is a good example of this, her death just wasn't saddening at all.

But in Serenity you're made to actaully care about the characters. Ok so death #1 probably wouldn't do much to a non-Firefly fan. But death #2 is incredible. It was really well placed, I feel that the main purpose of the death was to make you think that anything could happen after it, and there's many moments that you think someone else is going to die.

There's a lot more I could say about Serenity, but I don't want to review the thing I just want to stress why it is a better film than Episode III. By a lot.

I admit that I liked SW3 after I saw it, it is cool to find out exactly how everything happened and I'll probably get the DVD some time cause there's some really cool bits. But I could watch Serenity every week (and I probably will).
 
I know what you mean, Sci-Fi movies are not really my thing, But I was so impressed with this! Did you watch Firefly?
 
I seen it the same way you did, I saw Serenity and I liked it so I bought Firefly, and OMG it is so good! I was so impresses, and it actually makes the movie better, The series is so good I could have actually seen myself liking it better than Buffy and Angel if it had gone on longer!!

The DVD has just come out in the UK...I was surprised to see the ads on TV though...they seem to be plugging it quite well here...or perhaps it's just round the shows I watch, which would make sense, as I'm a fan...ain't marketing clever? 😉

The unfortunate thing is, I'm going to have to wait because, being a tightwad, I'm going to put a bulk order in with Amazon when Harry Potter 4 comes out to take advantage of their free shipping offer...having to wait for Wallace and Gromit and the new Stephen King book as well...

I noticed that too, it's being advertised very well on TV, with lots of shops adding their names to the add to know where to buy it, which is a good thing, means they think it will do well! And there are a good few big posters in the shops in Ireland!
 
Alright, so...

I finally got around to seeing it not that long ago, and I. LOVE. IT. Thank GOD for my boyfriend and his incredibly knack for buying fantstic DVDs.

Now, by this time, I had never watched the series, but there were things that just jumped out at me:

1. Wash's death. OMFG, THAT WAS INSANE! I was growing to love him, and he was taken away from me. It was so sudden and...visceral. I seriously felt like something got ripped out of me.

2. Zoe's reaction to Wash's death. It was totally in her character [and remember, I hadn't watched the series by the time I watched the movie]. She didn't speak, didn't say a word - she just killed. She went into crazy military mode on those Reaver's candy asses.

3. River's fight scenes. Jesus CHRIST those things were beauty refined.

4. The general air of the whole crew. You get the feeling that these people have been through some shit, and they love eachother. They're family.

The one thing that was downplayed for me was Book's death. I hadn't watched the TV show, so I didn't know his place in the crew, or why he was significant.

But I do have couple issues...

1. When in the blue hell was Book dropped off the ship? And where the hell is he, because that sure doesn't look like Bathgate Abbey to me. And when did he get all badass like?

2. How much time has passed since the end of 'The Message' to the beginning of 'Serenity'? Because I'm all confused.

3. WTF is up with Inara? I know she was getting dropped off, but it didn't seem like she was in any kind of contact with the crew on a regular basis since her departure, and...

4. What, exactly, the bleeding hell was her role in the film? She just kinda sat around and looked pretty the whole time, without any real rhyme or reason for her being in th movie except for bait.
 
1)'In the comic "Those Left Behind", Book expresses concern that he is being corrupted by living on Serenity and he leaves the ship. By the time Serenity begins, he has moved off the ship to the planet Haven.' badass? Not sure what you mean?

2)'six months after the events of the last episode'

3)I assume that she just wanted to distance herself from the crew, she probably missed them alot, and also she was probably very busy teaching companions.

4) Alot of her scenes were cut from the film as they werent necessary to the main plot, this was unfortunate but it was felt that her character was clearly presented in the small amount that she was in it.
