Serenity; The Movie - Discussion - (Spoilers)

Ok, I saw Serenity when it came out at the cinema last year and totally loved it. I had never seen Firefly at the time but that didn't matter, the plot was easily explained to those who didn't know the firefly universe, and I immediately fell in love with all the characters, so much so I bought firefly on dvd soon afterwards.

Now I really don't understand how this show did not get more than one series! Its so good! The film really went all out and expanded on everything set up in firefly, but there was still so much more that could be done.

So I just watched it. I watched all of firefly a few days ago before i watched Serenity tho.

As everyone has mentioned before me...WASH! Why WASH! He was so...washy *weep*.

I wish there was more Inara/Mal. Or like, flashbacks to parts of the show, to explain some stuff to people who didnt get it.

River delivered some hilarious lines. Plus her spying on Simon/Kaylee doin teh sex, just her head poking in, was so hilarious to me. I was laughing so much.

I really wish they explained how Book knew stuff. I thought we were going to get some sorta explanation. Remember how he got hurt, and they took him to that ship and they scanned his ID and immediately gave him attention? I wanted that explained damnit!

I loved the way it was shot, the music was awesome, the colouring of it was good too. I wish there was a tiny tiny bit more humour, but only because i LOVE the way Joss does humour in all his creations.

There better be a comic explaining Book's knowledge, though it ain't that hard to conclude he worked for the Alliance and was probably high up there, perhaps before being a shepherd.

I rewatched this twice this week, after reading it had polled as the best sci-fi movie ever, which I'm beginning to agree. I remember when Orson Scott Card claimed it was the best sci-fi ever, I was like "I love it, but wtf". Now I begin to agree. Not only is nearly every scene perfect and has that kind of replayability few movies have, but I don't know, there's something about the way it never has anything stupid and everytime it goes down cliché island, it redeems itself by playing the cliché that's fantastic.

I still think Wash's death is one of the greatest ever. I'm a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar!

It's frustrating as Hell the way some people refuse to get that. They'll point out some old chestnut that's been used a thousand times, and smugly offer it up as some kind of proof of inferiority. They just don't get that the cliche is being spun on, quite often with a specific purpose of pointing towards a deeper layer.

Tim Minear also likes to use the technique. I can mention him here, because he showran Firefly. It's going to be a bit of a drag when Drive comes out this Sunday, and this is all going to have to be re-explained when you just know some genius is going to offer up the show as being cliched.

Tarantino built an entire career on "cliches". They're his medium of expression. Like a collage artist or something. OK, he didn't build the building blocks. It's how you juggle the blocks, arrange them, create new combos that counts. The viewer has to appoach it half way, or at least part of the way. Figure out the creator's mindset, if possible..
