This comic has been long announced and now we finally have a release date - "Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale", written by Joss and Zack Whedon, with art by Chris Samnee, is going to be released on November 24, 2010.

One of Serenity's greatest mysteries is finally revealed in Shepherd's Tale, filling in the life of one of the show's most beloved characters--Shepherd Book!

Who was Book before meeting Mal and the rest of the Serenity crew, how did he become one of their most trusted allies, and how did he find God in a bowl of soup? Answers to these and more questions about Book's past are uncovered in this original graphic novel by rising stars Zack Whedon (Dr. Horrible, Terminator, Fringe) and Chris Samnee (Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps, Daredevil). I will most certainly be looking forward to this, if only to prove or disprove my longstanding theory that Book was in his younger days an Operative similar to the nameless one in "Serenity" who, through some sort of epiphany, came to realize that his employers actually were tyrants, not the benevolent rulers that they claimed to be. It will also be interesting to see how Joss, a very outspoken atheist, handles a story about someone finding God.

These comics have a big problem though. They are so short.
Can't see how they will be able to tell a story that will satisfy me if it's as short as all the other comics I've gotten so far.

Yeah. What was this one? 56 pages? That's only a start. They need to do way more.
 
Yes, this one is a little longer than the average comic, it has 56 pages, somewhere between two and three single issues, maybe, length-wise? It's more like a very thin trade. But it's actually a pretty good length to tell a single, self-contained story, depending on the writer they can be very good.
 
Oh, it was much longer than I thought.
Should probably have complained about short issues in one of the threads with comics that actually are short... 😛

I'm in two minds about this.

As much as I relish any new story set in the 'verse, I'm not sure if I want Book's back story to be demystified.

Some things are best left to the imagination. =/
 
Has anyone got this yet? I just read it and I'm gonna be re-reading, but I loved it.

Although when I saw him working for the alliance my phone rang and it was work, so I had to put it down and come back to it so I spent much longer than necessary thinking that he actually did. Was very glad to see he was a mole.
