I bought the "Serenity" DVD for my hubby... He's in AIT for the Army, so I wanted to get him some movies to watch on his laptop since he can't watch regular TV, and I found "Serenity" for $5 at Wal-Mart. 🙂
He's never seen 1 episode of Firefly... Do you think he'll like it?
 
I saw Serenity before seeing Firefly and really enjoyed it. Whether he likes it of course, I would not be able to tell you... Seeing as I am not him.
 
I saw Serenity before I saw Firefly and hated it.

Granted I am not a fan of Firefly either, but it is so much better.

I don't think Joss can do movies based on TV shows because he loves the character story and he wants to put so much in yet he is limited.
Plus after watching Firefly it doesn't make as much sense as it should.

Having said that, $5 is £2.70 so for that money doesn't matter if he'll like it or not, its 2 hours of 'entertainment' (read killing time) for less that a bag of sweets.
 
I saw firefly first, but I made my dad come along to Serenity with me when it came out and he enjoyed it without ever seeing the series. He has actually asked to borrow the DVD before lol! Hopefully your hubby will enjoy it, but if he doesnt, its not much cash wasted.

That's what I figured, too... He has actually expressed interest in watching "Firefly" before, 'cause I converted him into a Buffy/Angel fan when we got married, but neither one of us have ever seen a single "Firefly" episode. I am not much into space stuff, but he loves that kind of thing so I'm thinking he's gonna like the movie. And if not, then hey, it was only $5. 🙂

As a stand-alone film, it's great. Lots of action and great dialogue. A real "guy" movie. But as BB said, it doesn't stand so well as a continuation to the series. The development the characters went through in the series was pretty much forgotten, and the exposition is a bit much. In terms of closure, the movie did the best it could, I guess.
 
I had heard of Firefly before seeing Serenity. I came home after the movie and immediately ordered the DVD set, and I wasn't disappointed with it either, except that there wasn't enough of it.

Serenity is a good movie on its own merits, but it's definitely worth watching Firefly first. You'll get a lot more invested in the characters, plus Firefly is a great show that needs to be seen!
 
I watched Serenity before i watched Firefly too :L
and i totally didn't like it. (when it first came out)
I agree you need to watch Firefly before ye watch serenity, so ye can get to know the characters a little better 😉
 
I saw Serenity at the cinema with my girlfriend.

I hadn't seen a single episode of the TV series so I really wasn't sure what to expect.

I was actually just drawn-in because I loved Joss Whedon's work.

My girlfriend bumped her gums that I was taking to her to see (as she politely put it) "more Star Trek shite!"

Needless to say, we both absolutely loved it. And believe me, my girlfriend hates EVERYTHING. So it must be good.

Serenity isn't just a great sci-fi movie or a great action movie. It is simply a great movie.

It is everything that the Star Wars prequels should have been - relentlessly exciting, endlessly inventive and laugh-out-loud funny. It's an absolute joy to watch and is easily one of my favourite films now.

Serenity is that rare thing - a movie that proves blockbusters don't have to be vapid, trash entertainment.

Whereas the Star Wars prequels were soulless CGi garbage, Serenity shines with the kind of love, attention and creative flair you rarely see in summer movies these days, giving us memorable characters to actually care about, a genuinely moving storyline that has depth and intelligence and a script full of quotable dialogue, all marrying with superbly staged action set-pieces and hyper-kinetic space battles. Not to mention that Captain Mal is the most thrilling and endearing action hero science fiction has seen for decades.

Like all the best phenomena, it is the kind of universe that you'd just love to be a part of.

It was only after seeing the movie that I decided to go out and buy the Firefly boxset.

I know a lot of people wish the series hadn't been cancelled, but it was blessing in disguise - we probably would never have gotten such a fantastic film.

The fact that this movie has still to reach so many who would almost certainly love it is a tragic shame.
 
To me Firefly/Serenity is Joss's alltime masterpiece *ducks flying debris from Buffy-ites.* I think it needs to be watched contiguously. I was plowing through my first walk-through of Buffy when my next-door college dorm-mate, who was writing her senior thesis on Buffy as the archetypal young female heroine, told me that Joss's current project was "a Western set in outer space." It was several years before I watched it. My ex brought home the Firefly box set one afternoon and we quite literally watched the entire series through until four in the morning, then waited for shops to open and drove to the suburbs to find a big box store selling Serenity. I can't see how the significance of the characters in Serenity would resonate if you hadn't seen the series. However, if your beloved hubby is in AIT, jeez, take what you can get. I don't think the CO's speak Jossverse 😉
