Question Series ending Season 5?

So, Ive been reading alot, and I did hear something in the commentary from the dvds that Joss thought Season 5 was the end of Buffy..

Was it because of ratings or because of the network change that he thought this?
 
I think he thought that 'The Gift' would be a good place to end the show, but when he got the chance to move to another network, he changed his mind.

That would be about the it.
He actually said this in the Extras.. That the episode was the 100th one, and would be a great way to end the series... but then he gave up and resurrected her xD
 
I always thought that it wasn't that he wanted to end the show there but that they were having very difficult contract negotiations with the WB who wanted to cut the budget so he thought it might be the end so wrote The Gift with that possibility in mind. Then of course UPN came on board with more money and more creative freedom for Joss and his team so they made the move.

I think I heard joss saying, he had plans for the show to end with Buffy's death. everyting had come to closure..No unanswered questions and it would be nice if the heorin just for once, could rest in peace without having to save the world
 
If I remember correctly it was because the contract with the WB was coming to an end. I remember in an interview that he was actually really pissed off and bitter because they were celebrating the 100th episode and at the same time the show was going to be over because they could not find a home for the show. Then the UPN comes along and makes everything allright. He stated that because of what happend with the WB the season five ending was meant to wrap up the whole story so that if they could not find another home then the show would have some kind of conclusion.
It is interesting to me that he did this for season five but not for season seven. Obviously he knew it was going to go somewhere eventually, or at least I have to imagine he thought it might.

How do you figure it was NOT wrapped up in season seven? there was no more hellmouth- job done. there was no more one girl in all the world- job done. it was established that Buffy could lead a normal life at the end of the season, exactly what she wanted- job done.

He wrapped it up perfectly. Great ending.

Actually, I don't know about the death of Buffy, I mean that is kinda bad way for Buffy to go.
It makes her entire struggle pretty irrelevent.

I did hear somewhere (probably on BB) that he had always planned to end the show with Sunnydales destruction and that season 5 was building to that BUT had a last minute reprieve because it was commissioned on another channel.
 
I did not like the ending. Let me explain that the mere idea that there would be no more Buffy or Angel is more than I could bear. I was so angry at both endings because it was like WHAT?!?! OVER!?!?! CANT BE!?!?!! I cried like a little bitca and I feel like I will only be satisfied with the ending when it is Buffy and Angel riding off into the sunrise. 🙂

better get used to an unsatisfying life then... the whole sunset thing, that wont happen.. best chance you had for happy ending was already done.. next will be bad.
 
Alas it is a negative attitude that will hinder ones ability for true happiness. I am okay with keeping my vision of the perfect ending whether it will ever happen or not.

Letting them eat your boyfriends brains first whilst you flee can hardly be considered a plan!
I was just watching the "Chosen" commentary last night, and Joss mentioned how they designed the season finale of five to end the show if it had too - because they were not sure if they'd get picked up for another season. It's weird to think that there could have not been a six anf seven...those are my favorite seasons.
 
when i first saw season 7 a part of me wished joss had let it end after the gift despite how sad that episode was it would have been a pretty cool way to end, but i judged it to quickly and would have hated it to end so soon, it was always popular, always got the ratings not to mention the strong cult following and loyal fanbase it could have ran longer, it annoys me when i see stuff like smallville still going after 8 seasons and buffy finished wit 7 🙁

You're kidding.. that would mean no Once More With Feeling, that one episode was a pretty iconic moment. To advance the plot and storylines all while in song was/is an amazing testament to what kind of show Buffy was.

Granted before her death we had Hush, but Hush and Once More is a one-two knockout punch.

Also, I don't think Buffy would be more iconic if it had ended at season five. So much of the ongoing interest/discussion in the series revolves around seasons 6 & 7.

i completely agree. There wouldnt have been Spuffy!
What?! If it had stopped after season 5, there would have been so many loose ends, not being tied together. Like Dawns role, the Hellmouth still being opened for action, and not to forget Buffy and Spike, and Spike in general. I think a lot of characters only fully developed during the last two seasons, like Dawn, Spike, Willow. I agree that Buffy dying in the end would have made it more iconic and all, but I'm glad they didn't stop after season 5.
 
Also, we would have missed Mature S7 Xander 🙁 I really loved the man he became. Same goes for S7 Dawn.
