So Buffy finds this thing stuck in a rock and pulls it out.
Now I may not have heard when they mentioned it, but what exactly was that thing (besides a scythe. What is it used for)?

Also, wasn't it more along the lines of Willow's magic that brought about the gazillion slayers and not necessarily the scythe itself? How much was Willow and much much was scythe in the multi-slayer transformation?

While I'm at it, doesn't that really tip the scales in the favor of good? Having a gazillion slayers running around is kinda tipping the scales don't ya think?

the scythe was the weapon of the slayers...except it was hidden for when it was really needed. the guardians may have meant it to be kept until that moment, when buffy would need it to defeat Caleb, or they may have meant a time before that, say, the Mayor, or Glory, no one really knows that answer.
anyway, the scythe was the weapon of the slayers, embued with the power of the Chosen One. Willow tapped into this power and devided it between every Potential on the planet.
it was Willow's spell that created all the slayers, but she couldn't have done it without the scythe.
(^^Did that make sense?)

as for tipping the scales...there are millions of demons and vampires in the world...what's the harm in having a few thousand more slayers to help fight them?

In another thread I was discussing what's been called a fanwank.

What that is is, there are times in the creation of a fictional universe when you find something that doesn't have a clear explanation, and sometimes stuff that just plain doesn't make sense. You're forced to find a way to make it make sense in your own intellect.

I'm not sure there is a clear explanation for exactly how the scythe is used. Where the explanation gets fuzzy is where you're going to have to use a fanwank.

There is this from Chosen -

BUFFY (V.O.)
Tomorrow, Willow will use the essence of the scythe to change our destiny.

But what exactly does that mean? You have three known elements to the spell - Willow, the essence of the scythe, and the slayer destiny. Which is most important?

I say you can see it either of 3 ways and at this point they're all correct.

You can see Willow as the mistress of the power using the spark from the scythe essence to draw the slayer destiny out from the universe.

You can see Willow drawing the destiny out from within the scythe.

Or...and this is my own personal theory - you can see Willow as using the scythe as a kind of conduit through which she connects with the source of Slayer power we saw in the Shadowman's cave of Get It Done.

I never claim to be a grandmaster of the BuffyWorld, but one thing comes to mind...
If the scythe was able to do all these magical mystical things on its own--with no Willow help--why didn't it do it on its own?

So the past slayers that stuck the scythe in the rock had no need for it at that time? Why didn't they use it to get rid of the first evil back then?

(I can see Joss sticking me in a closet as he yells "You ask too many questions, grasshopper. You must be dealt with. Get some duct tape for his mouth!) : grinyes

Just going by memory (always a dangerous thing 😉 ) there are some actual facts concerning the scythe which might help to make informed guesses

* The scythe was created by the Guardians.

* The scythe was created elsewhere and brought to Sunnydale

* The scythe was used to slay the last pure demon

* The scythe has been in Sunnydale ever since

* Only the slayer can wield it's power

The inscription is Latin words written with Greek letters: Non tibi est. Ei solae tractare licet.

SPIKE
(translating) "It is not for thee. It is for her alone to wield."

If I'm wrong about any of those please straighten me out, because as I said, I was just going by memory for most of them.

i think you're right, N4H.
i can't exactly remember who put the scythe in Sunnydale, but as far as i can recall, it wasn't a slayer.
no one new about the scythe, so no other slayer could use it. obviously The First got wind of it somehow, and instructed Caleb to dig it out...but he couldn't as Spike's words pointed out 'It is not for thee. It is for her alone to weild. Meaning neither Caleb or the Bringers had slayer powers, so they couldn't get the scythe out of the rock.
(see how Buffy got it out som easily? slayer powers!)

Yeah that inscription is interesting -

There's another quote that's interesting -

GILES
Right. Is there any chance it's
something besides a tool to kill
things?

Buffy shrugs, "who knows."

BUFFY
The First's guys were clearly trying
to get it out of that stone. It's
not just some tool; it's important.

OK, so it's not just a weapon, and only the slayer can wield it's power.

Question: How can Willow access it's power then? Does Buffy somehow magically authorize it? Does it have anything to do with Willow being situated directly over the 2 slayers when she activates the scythe? Surely that inscription couldn't possibly be referring to Willow as the "her"? Nah...

It's a good thing you brought that up 'cause I would have been all over that like a duck on a bug!

Yeah I never really got how Willow could access the "essence" of the scythe. It seems weird if it's just 'cause the slayers are close. Maybe it's the whole thing.. I mean, obviously the slayer thing is not as perfect as it once was, maybe it's got something to do with the fact that the slayer line is weird at the moment, uh, and that makes the scythe changed as well in some way..?

Ok I have no idea what I'm going on about, lol.. Just never really made sense to me.

Even though I agree with Lyri about this, I doubt all the new slayers had watchers and stuff. As we saw (on AtS) it can be kind of dangerous for some girls to have super powers all of a sudden, I'm don't think this is a good thing all together. But, I mean they didn't really have an option, and I doubt the plan was that the world is safer with lots and lots of slayers, the plan was more about finding a way to prevent The First from doing what it planned to do at this very monent. Sort of.

I always thought of the scythe as the magical weapon, and Willow as the magical person who "threw the switch" to let it's power flow...(any surprise I look at things from an electrical perspective?LOL!)

Electricity has immense power...but to get it to work, you have to channel it through the wires, and control it with switches, etc...a battery has lots of stored power, but it just sits there until it is attached to some wires and activated. Inanimate objects cannot act on their own by definition...the scythe needed a switch, and a path to control the power.

N4H...would this qualify as a fanwank? 😉 Or just a reiteration of the facts and the laws of physics? 😉

One more piece of useless information: scythes were used as farming tools, most often to cut grain/grass. Like most farming tools, they could double as weapons...like pitchforks, nunchukas, etc...

They call it a scythe, but it doesn't look like any scythe I've ever seen. I always suspected they called it a scythe more for the metaphoric aspect of a scythe. You always see "Death" with a scythe. When you look at mystic explanations of representations of death such as in the tarot, death also represents rebirth.

OK, now on fanwanks, I might be playing with the definition a bit. Here's the definition the way I first heard it from Wikipedia -

A fanwank is an attempt to explain or justify (often through convoluted contrivances) plot holes or continuity errors in a work of fiction. The term is used both as a verb and a noun; the practice is sometimes known as fanwankery. It is disparaging, equating the activity with the ineffectual and solitary pleasure of masturbation ("wanking" in British slang).
.

I remember I heard a good one one time where a guy was trying to explain scientifically why a vampire couldn't see his reflection in the mirror, yet you could take it's picture. He postulated theorized particles of light, which he invented a name for.

In what you're describing I'd say it isn't really a fanwank until you start to explain exactly how the process of "turning the scythe on", and channeling it's energy works.

I'll give you an example of what I'm talking about when I mention fanwankery with my theory of "the scythe as conduit".

In Get it Done they tell us the source of the slayer power, and Buffy's truest strength is either in, or linked to from the Shadowman's cave. The way we saw slayer creation described you have to in some way put that power into the slayer you're trying to create.

So in Chosen they want to imbue multiple girls with slayer power. Now to me that means you have to somehow get the power from the Shadowman's cave to the slayer's. Also in Get it Done, Willow and Anya say you need a conduit to transfer energy magically. I say that's what Willow does in Chosen. She uses the scythe as a conduit, and channels slayer energy through the scythe, from the Shadowmens' dimension to the potentials.

Now to me that's common sense, but apparently others see it differently. They either see Willow as in some way creating the slayer power herself using the power of the scythe as some kind of spark, or drawing the power directly from the scythe. Because there are different interpretations of the same event, I have to call my interpretation a fanwank.

Oh and here's something you might want to recall for your fanwank if you ever create one KD. Another thing Willow says in Get it Done is "Magic works of physics".

Don't you think it's a bit of a stretch to make a plan that would create millions of slayers at one time...seeing as the Watcher's Council was blown to smithereens.
We have millions of girls now, but nobody to hand watchers to them! 😱

Giles should have went back and made himself boss and started over again.

Well there is not millions of Girls, there is at the most like a thousand or two, remember we only get a rough estimate of how many are left when Giles refers to them as "A handful of girls left"
