we've all had favorite shows that left the air either due to cancellation or the actors just deciding not to come back the next season. Which do you prefer? The "tie up all the loose ends, everybody lives happily after" finale, the cliff hanger, or "the fight goes on," where nothing is concluded?

I personally like to see all of the loose ends tied up, the bad guys all defeated, and the fade to black with the hero and heroine locked in a passionate embrace, with a big "And They Lived Happily Ever After" ending.
 
I have to agree with you there. I like to see stories wrapped up with a little bow. That's why the Angel ending irked me so much; they left so many questions unanswered. I know, I know, it was a mission statement for the show, they wanted Angel to go out fighting, yadda yadda yadda, but I want to see the big fight! Even the Buffy finale left too many loose ends for me, even though they did wrap things up quite nicely.
 
I'm gonna go with the Angel formula on this one. I thought 'Not Fade Away' was the perfect way to end the show, with all the heroes still fighting, telling us that they'll never give up, even if they've been cancelled and been forced into comic book pages...I'm done.

I like the idea that each fan can come up with their own conclusions, they're own happy endings. I think that's the best way to end.
 
Very different endings for 2 very different shows. But I love the fact that the last shot on both shows is almost exactly the same. A low angle shot showing the gang with our hero in the middle but difference is Buffy is in the sun, has saved the day, has her friends around her and is thinking what to do with the new life she has. Whereas Angel is fighting in a battle which he thinks may be his last on a rainy night in an alleyway in LA, has lost Cordelia, Wesley, Fred and soon Gunn too. It's a great contrast.
 
I don't really have a preference between all-loose-ends-tied-up and let's-go-out-fighting, but I do MUCHLY prefer it when the writers know its coming. For the most part, they manage to give us an emotional send off. It tends to be better than the network going, "Oops! No more of this show! Bye-bye!" and the viewer never knowing what happened.
 
I agree with Lyri about the Angel finale, as it was pretty much open to the viewer's interpretation. It was a cliffhanger, yes, but it was a friendly cliffhanger, unlike those "the bomb exploded and the fate of the main characters is forever unknown" cliffhangers. Seen plenty of those, and they do frustrate me to no end!
 
First of all, endings that are not supposed to be endings of course blow big time. A show ending with a big cliff hanger so you´ll want to see the next season and then it´s canceled. It can never big good, can it?

Tying up some loose ends is good, but I don´t want every little thing to be solved. You got to use your imagination a little bit. I do like both the Buffyfinale (ok, we beat the big bad but it doesn´t mean all our problems are solved) and Angelfinale (this is our lives, lets get the most out of it, and who knows we might make it after all), although the Angel one anoyed me at first. I just wanted more, it was to soon. But now I really like it.

I definitely prefer things to be wrapped up nicely. I always feel a bit cheated when it just ends. I don't need a perfectly happy ending. Just something that lets us know what will happen and that things will at least be okay.
 
I like the way AtS ended. As long as there aren't these really huge cliffhangers, it's okay to keep a bit of tension up. Well it's better anyway than an ending you might not like (which has also happened on some shows).
Plus, these endings leave a lot of room for fanfiction or even books so you can say it's never over.
 
Personally I think it depends on the show. I was relatively happy with both Buffy's and Angel's finales. These are characters that in my opinion will never be resolved because people care too much about them to ever really let go. We will never get happily ever after in the Buffyverse and to be honest I don't realy want it.

There were shows where I did want to see the happy ending but was very much underwhelmed by it, Friends anyone? Same goes for Dawsons Creek, I got what I wanted but it was still unsatisfying, so I think it's best to leave the audience just slightly on the edge of their seat. Not hanging off the side of a cliff hanging but more like standing at the edge with that scary impulse to jump just cuz you can.

Oh the Friends finale was somehow like torture. I KNEW I was ganna cry and yet I kept watching it. It's just so sad it ended after 10 funloa
I don't know. I usually have mixed feelings about how my shows end. Somehow I always seem dissatisfied. I guess when you invest that much time watching a show for seasons, its just weird to see everything suddenly tied up and put to rest. It just seems abrupt. I think Buffy ad Angel ended pretty well though.
 
It REALLY depends on the show.

Like, when i was a kid, i loved Boy Meets World. Now obviously, thats a sitcom (though it did have arcs). Everything was tied up at the end with relationships and where the characters were at that point in their lives. And i def think thats how it should end.

But then like, there's Lost. Which i know will only have 6 seasons (as the producers have said). There's a part of me that does want answers to SO many of the questions, but id still like something to end as a cliff hangar. They can still explain everything thats come to pass up to that point and leave it with a brand new cliff hangar....

I guess it depends on the show.
 
No matter how my favorite shows end whether it's sudden with no ending, whether it's tied up nicely with a happy ending, or whether it's a cliffhanger all of them leave me wanting more. More time with the characters and the world. I live in denial for as long as possible holding onto everything that they did create and have already done. Whenever a show ends I hate it! But I guess I'd rather have it somewhat tied up, leaving room for more possibilities in the future. Never give up. Never surrender.
 
It dosnt really matter too much anyway, as long as the Bulk of the main story and characters are good,
because they could do a hundred different endings,
