Society is getting worse because everyone wants to rehabilitate instead of punish. When prison is better than where you come from, why should you be afraid of it?
I want to rehabilitate, but not make it cushy. I think White Collar Prisons need to be a LOT more harsh. Talk about people who should know better.
I think, however, your general Gang Banger, random punk and junkie need something different. Cutting out Cable and the "luxuries" for one. It's not a vacation at the Hilton. And I don't think this giving them telemarketing jobs is good either.
I can't say they should earn a real college degree, but I think training them for the world is a good thing. When you drop out of highschool, roam the streets, get mixed up in drugs and madness, you don't know anything. When we toss them out of prison they know nothing other than to go back to what they were doing. If we could find a way to educate them, get their GED and pass a "Trade School" course in something actually productive where they could get a job, a real job that they might be good at and make more money than being bag boy at the grocery store BEFORE they could earn their parole hearing.
MANY of those repeat offenders are "victims" of their family, economic status, and neighborhoods. It's odd when people are suprised that they go back to the only life they know.
Then again, I have too many crazy ideas on how to deal with almost everything. I'm all for doing it for the illegal aliens too. Instead of spending the money to send them all back across the border just so they can come back, how about have them complete courses on speaking English and actually being able to get a real job.
Then, we can TAX THE CRAP out of all the huge companies sending their customer service and call centers overseas, so they'll bring them back and bring all the jobs back. We simply say, if your call center is in a place where 90% of your customers are not, you're getting whacked with a tax sky high! I'm sick of having computer problems that I can barely explain in English and then try to explain them in a way that someone who doesn't speak English can understand. We bring the jobs back, we'd have jobs for us AND the illegals becoming legal.
Granted the big, rich companies would lose money by having to pay an ACTUAL pay check to Americans instead of the $2 an hour they can get away with in India. On the other hand, we'd have jobs for people to get. Jobs with insurance and at least minimun wage.
Just some of my crazy thoughts.
