I have sex ed as a Senior, which is kind of late but that's besides the point. One of the questions on our homework tonight is: what is the difference between morals and values? For whatever reason, I'm stumped by this question. Aren't they the same thing? We also have to give examples. Can anyone be of some help?

From dictionary.com

morals = principles or habits with respect to right or wrong conduct

values = Sociology. the ideals, customs, institutions, etc., of a society toward which the people of the group have an affective regard. These values may be positive, as cleanliness, freedom, or education, or negative, as cruelty, crime, or blasphemy.

so morals are like "the moral of the story is... don't hit girls." and values are like "women and men are equal?"

I guess values may or may not relate directly to morality. They're cultural preferences. They're attitudes a particular person or group have towards something: people, actions, things (or morals, abstract concepts...).

I think you could say that they're a person's priorities. They're beliefs people feel are important to maintain "” for themselves, their families and often society, civilization as a whole.

I think we could say that morals transcend cultures and community values. For example, you can find "Thou shalt not murder" in virtually every religion on the planet, and I would say that the official stance of every community on the planet supports this with penalties for committing murder. This is a moral. The value part comes in with the weight of punishment assigned to the perpetrator. For example, in certain countries, the death of a woman by murder is punished less severely (or not at all) than it is here in Western culture. They have decided as a group that this particular transgression is of a certain lesser value compared to, say, the murder of a man. I'm not trying to start a debate on the subject, just using it as an illustration of the difference between morals and values.

::focuses on the word transgression:: im not no trans anything!!!!!!
Hmm. I think there are those who want certain morals to transcend culture, and who believe, personally, that they do. And I think there may be particular morals that are virtually universal, like you say....stigmas related to murder for instance. But even there (historically anyway), you come up against stuff like human sacrifice - actually seen as a good within a particular culture. It probably wouldn't have even been defined as murder.

To me, it gets tricky cos there are different moral codes that would seem to directly conflict at times. I'd label them "moral codes" anyway. Shame/honor cultures like traditional Japan for instance. A Japanese warrior committing seppoku would be acting to preserve his family's honor, a good to him. Yet, suicide's considered immoral, a sin, within Christianity. Am I just describing a conflict of values here?

Morals are personal. They're about you.

I will not cheat.
I will not steal.
I will not kill.

Values are about actions and beliefs in relation to others.

All people should be treated equal.

Actually I'm starting to confuse myself.

What the hell does this have to do with sex education? Values is how much you're willing to pay for a hooker, and morals is how many times you are willing to cheat on your girlfriend. That's my answer.

Short and to the point...and the hooker thing is a great illustration...nice!

no sex ed, thats so tragic
As was stated above, MORALS are individual and personal judgements about right and wrong, which are often influenced by larger societal values.

And VALUES are the societal/cultural majority judgement about right and wrong. These change slowly over time and again as stated above, are influenced by the cultures that comprise the larger society (their religious beliefs, laws that are currently held, etc...)

In terms of sex ed...

Society may value (unspoken or not) that men are manly men (not as much now as in the past) and because the cultural idea about manliness is that one is sexually driven--it is less taboo for a man to be very sexually active.
A man might hold the moral conviction that he should only have sex when he is married, which may be somewhat counter culture in the larger society, but may be something valued within the christian community (a cultural group).

conversely for women, society tends to value (unspoken or not) that women be more virginal, pure, and chaste (not as much now as in the past) and therefore it is more taboo for a woman to be very sexually active (she will be called a slut, when the aforementioned man would likely not)
A woman might hold a moral conviction that it is not a problem at all for people to have sex with each other as long as they are being responsible (or are in love, or are planning be monogamous, or whatever). She may have developed this moral stance as a product of being raised by a community that held more liberal values or, of course for an entirely different reason.

neither are necessarily absolute. And the development and evolution of values within a culture is far more interesting and complicated than I am able to present here.

I hope that helps or is at least in plain language
