Shark bite

I agree with Blaze. If a show jumps the shark, to me that just means it's gotten to ridiculous and stupid for me to even continue watching.

I agree. I don't think Buffy or Angel ever really jump the shark. But they do have a few close calls. I'd say Adam, but luckily they move on from him quickly. With Dawn, and Buffy being resurrected, those could have been jump the shark moments but they make it work out in the end. For Angel, I'd say seeing Cordy sleep with Connor. Luckily I stuck with it and found out it wasn't really Cordy. But at first I was like "Nope!"

Jasmine arc is like an ode for a free human will. It's a powerful message. Maybe they handled it not very well, but it's still interesting idea, IMO.
 
Imo Angel has never jumped the shark, it's come close but not really. The only time I thought that Angel as a character did that was Twilight, and that was in Buffy's comic.

BtVS jumped the shark in S9 when Buffy briefly turned out to be a robot. She wasn't pregnant, or human apparently.
What got me wasn't that this was a ludicrous plot (we've had those before) it's that it was a lazy cop-out, a way to duck an interesting issue and at the same time make a lot of what had come before utterly redundant. Like so much of S9 come to think of it.

I guess my definition is a bit different. For me, a show jumps the shark (who invented that term anyway) when the show becomes so ridiculous/OOC/stupid/a poor copy of it's former self to the point where I don't want to watch the show anymore. Usually, when a show jumps the shark, I stop watching. For example, Glee jumped the shark super early on, One Tree Hill jumped the shark around s5 for me, couldn't finish the rest. Pretty Little Liars jumped the shark after they revealed A #81. All those shows have in common the fact that I stopped watching.

To me, neither Buffy not Angel ever jumped the shark, they always felt like Buffy and Angel. Some storylines were certainly weaker than others, like Buffy s7 and Angel s4 have a lot of weak points, but they are still superior shows than half of what is on TV and they have many redeeming qualities too. Not once did I debate giving up on the show, to me it was always good enough to maintain my interest.

Curious about people talking about Dawn (since I know she's one of the most hated character), do you still like s5? It's strange that Dawn is considered one of the worst, yet s5 is usually considered the best season after s2/3.

Eh, I'm just kidding around, I love Dawnie even when she's whiny because I get why she's whiney- her sister is gorgeous, has superpowers, cool friends, leads a fantastically interesting life and fights monsters.
Dawn, by contrast, is just a normal kid- (who turns out isn't even real) so of course she's gonna have issues for that first year or two of existance.

Plus Dawn's whinny-ness has a tendancy to be exaggerated, it only really gets too much in a couple of episode of S6 ('OAFA', 'Normal Again').

I dont like Dawn at all. I like the Key though! I thought that was a good tale. But Dawn? eh.

Yeah - the weird warrior band who show up in Sunnydale in chain mail chanting The key is the link, the link must be severed. Where did they come from - did they ride across the ocean? Is this Buffy meets Monty Python? And, BTW, if the key could be anything, how could anyone know that it would wear a dress and bleed. Making it a toaster oven seems much smarter.

And I actually like Dawn - not a favorite but I don't dislike her.

Yea I didn't like the Knights of Byzantium or whatever. Felt out of place on Buffy.
If Buffy wasn't the kind of show it is/was it would be filled with moments that could be considered them "Jumping the Shark".

They have been there from the first episode imho.
But to me is the success behind the show those moments that could be called "Jump the Shark" moments on other shows.

When you base the whole show on supernatural and over the top stuff you can get away with pretty much anything.
And I wouldn't want to say that one over the top stupid thing in season 6 or 7 is a "Jump the Shark" moment when something equally stupid and silly in the first 3 seasons always seems to get a pass.

I admit that the Shark demon in Tabula Rasa, that I mention as a close call on a "Jump the Shark" moment earlier, isn't really. Not more than a lot of other moments.
The truth is that just don't like that idea. But is it really so much worse than a bunch of others? Probably not. It just doesn't work for my personal taste.

It took me a while to understand what he meant to "jump the shark", I thought it was a quote from a some episode and I wondered what I had lost. (Thanks to Urban Dictionary now I know that it refers to Fonzie from Happy Days)

Yes, both BTVS and ATS jumped the shark for me. In Angel the Connor-sleeps-with-Jasdelia thing was just creepy, and in BVS all season six. But if in Angel the jump was something that then they explained better, in Buffy, from then on, the jump was never stopped and more than a jump was a race against the shark and without even using the water skis.

The maximum peak was reached in eight and nine seasons
Dawn giant. Buffy a thief. Angel masquerading as super asshole. Buffy and Angel can fly. Oh Spike can fly too and he's the king of a crew of bugs fled from Star Trek (Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise.) Buffy pregnant, she wants an abortion. No Buffy pregnant, she is a robot and no longer needs to have an abortion. ...Must I continue? Oh, there's still the season ten, so I have good hopes.

At this point, I can reasonably say that the only "jump that I loved" was in "The Gift". Buffy died jumping from the tower and she never came back

Which is usually the reason why I drop TV shows that I love, and it's never easy to do…
Glad that I never reached that point with BtVS or AtS thought 🙂
 
This is a tough one. I guess neither really jumped the shark for me because I'm still going with both sets of comics. The obvious one for Buffy is the introduction of Dawn and re-writing everything we'd seen for 4 years. That's just really irritating. Also what @Taake said about Season 6 is very true and amusing. You can get away with a lot of over the top stuff in the Buffyverse if it's enjoyable but Season 6 wasn't for the most part. Then the comics have all sorts of what the hell moments. I think they just stand out more without the cast to bring some realism to events. Those massive God things and Buffy flying around certainly felt like it crossed a line. Also the pregnant, arm losing, robot Buffy section was a real low point.

I'm not sure about Angel. I think it stayed a little more consistent throughout. I think higher power Cordelia and everything that followed on from that was pushing the limits though.
