Okay so I just finished watchin Season 1 Episode 4 "Teacher's Pet" and at the end after Buffy puts Dr. Gregory's glasses in his coat pocket and closes the closet door...they show more mantis eggs under the shelf and they start opening. But, that storyline never again becomes relevant.......
Do you guys think they were going to elaborate at one point, but decided against it at last? Or was it symbolic (which I'm sort of doubting because that would be weird in this case) and I'm just not catching it?

They really did... I think the writers wrote them in, and kinda forgot about them because at that point they were a mid-season replacement show and they had no way of knowing if they were ever going to get to explore those cliffhangers again.

Yeah I guess I didn't really realize all of the cliffhangers until now...I mean it was only the beginning. I forgive them for experimenting a bit.
 
I think they put it in because of the "X-Files" horror/noir genre feel of the first season. The writers wanted to give the message that even though Buffy is the hero the world is still in constant danger from otherworldly phenomena. I think they left those cliffhangers on purpose and never intended to come back to them.

I'd always wondered about that -- however, I do agree that it adds to the X-files feel of the first season. I kinda like the open-ended-ness 😛 and the cheesyness too xD
 
I thought it was supposed to just be a creepy end to the show... Just a little way of saying: there'll always be more monsters...

Honestly? This was one cliffhanger I'm glad they never reexplored. I thought this was one of most lame monster-of-the-week episodes ever. Even though it's a Xander-centric episode, I thought it sucked.

Could you imagine the mantis-eggs coming into play later in the seasons? The Hellmouth, giant Mayor-snake, demon/human/robot hybred, a Hell god, and an army of vampires later... the villian of the episode is a life size praying mantis... ooooohhhhhh beware! Buffy would just throw the scythe at it and the episode would be over in 40 seconds. lol
