"She's Not Real We're Not Here Family, We don't even know what she is"

Not really; it was true. I can't imagine how odd it would be to learn someone was created and placed in your family who didn't belong and that you were given fake memories in order to care for the person. It certainly sounds harsh, but at that point I think Buffy needed to work out her feelings about the whole situation.

This was before she found out the whole story wasn't it? With Glory and all that. If so then not really, it's a legitimate concern if you've just done a spell and found out that your sister is not really your sister.

Harsh for Dawn to overhear, but not for Buffy to say.
 
No, at the time that Buffy said that she knew that Dawn wasn't actually part of her family but what (not "who," which I find significant in this content) she was, was was pretty much a total mystery to everyone at that point, a set of memories that they were just beginning to realize were totally false. Almost certainly, Buffy was thinking about her original college roommate, a demon trying to, for some undisclosed reason, was trying to pass herself as human. And on that note, I've always wondered if the mysterious monks, if any of them had survived their confrontation with Glory, had any plans of actually telling Buffy just what Dawn really was and why she had been placed in her care. She found out eventually anyhow, and it certainly didn't lessen her determination to prevent Glory's plans from being successful.
 
I thought when she said that she was trying to excuse Dawns actions? But Dawn just heard half of the conversation? Or am i thinking of something else? 😕
 
I am in total agreement with Ashleigh, Buffy was saying that in a way to try and understand Dawn, Dawn just didn't hear the whole conversation so she took it the wrong way.
 
I don't think she was wrong... it was a very confusing situation, she was kinda just thinking out loud... I always thought it was a similar reaction one might have if you found out your borther/sister was adopted, it may not be a nice thing to say, but it is something that would cross your mind.
 
This was a very literal statement and very true. Dawn was in fact not a real person and not a real part of their family, and they didn't know she was the Key. So no, I don't think Buffy was out of line saying this. 🙂

You're right. Dawn only heard up to "We don't even know what she is" and then Joyce got peeved...and Buffy said that she was just putting herself in Dawn's shoes.
