not sure if this is where this goes, but here it goes...

What are shippers, are they dangerous and if so how do I avoid them?

'Ship is short for relationship. If you 'ship a couple, it just means you love them very much above all other couples. "Shipping wars" can kind of get out of hand, but if you respect others' opinions and they respect your own, you'll be fine 🙂

that's important to know, thanks

guess I've already joined the shipping debate with my choice of avatar🙂

Make haste, my fellow Spuffies! Escort this one to a safe place before the Bangels seize hold of him. For ours is the path to love and joy, shielding you from the anguish and incessant brooding that is our enemy.

Fuffy is the way.

Come, wayward soul. Become one of us.
To be a Bangel or a Spuffy means constant torment, suffering and nerd rage.

Fuffy means peace, understanding and love.

Agree. :D
I think people here are reasonable enough that, while they are passionate about their ships, as long as you don't wander around saying "your ship is wrong" you're fine.

For instance, I don't ship Spuffy. But I'd be a real ass if I said you were wrong. You're perfectly entitled to your opinion.

So, all should be fine. Everyone is understanding here and as long as you stay out of any Spuffy vs. topics, you shouldn't have to worry about the shipping wars.

As stated, ship is short for relationship, so if you ship a pair then you take pleasure in seeing/imagining them as a couple. This can be "canon" couples (ones depicted as together on screen in the series) - eg Bangel is the portmanteau for Buffy/Angel - or non-canon which are couples that weren't officially together, but fans can enjoy imagining them as such - eg Fuffy (Faith/Buffy).

It's not necessarily true that to ship a couple you have to "love them very much above all other couples" as GrrArgh says. Far from it. Most fans will have a long list of ships they like and will often ship the same character with a couple of different pairings. For example, let's take the character of Faith. First and foremost Fuffy, but then I also like Faillow (Faith/Willow) and when in the right mood, Fawn (Faith/Dawn) and even on to other characters like Wesley, Giles, Anya etc.

Regarding BtVS then you'll find that the most controversy, or arguments, or shall we say loyal fans revolve around the two pairings of Bangel and Spuffy. Those two choose to take a side and will aggressively denounce and put down the other (usually with humour and not too seriously, but some take it very seriously.) There are some that can enjoy both pairings, but it is rarer than with other ships. I think xfivebyfive put it best when she said that the Bangel and Spuffy fans seem to carry over the Angel/Spike fued to their respective ships.

I've got a lot to learn, I thought Fuffy was Finn+Buffy.🙂

And I'm not saying I'm exactly committed to Spuffy, just that they were cool in Something Blue...spuffy rules😉

Nah. Riley and Buffy is known as either Ruffy or Briley.

Not many people ship them and those who do, are not as vocal as the Spuffies or Bangels.

Oh, come on, we're not that bad. I'm not rabid, I swear. 😀

LOL about the hair!
You can also ship platonic relationships! I love Spike/Dawn (although the shipper nicknames for that particular ship are kind of unfortunate...) and Xander/Willow, for example. Shipping generally applies to romantic relationships, but platonic ships count too! 🙂
