(There is no Season 9 section, so I'm posting this here)

What would your opinion be if Joss were to make a statement at the beginning of Season 9 something like this:

"For this entire season, NOBODY LOVES ANYBODY. No Bangel, no Spuffy, no Cangel, Fuffy, Kwillow, Batsu, Dander, or any other romantic entanglements. Everybody's just good friends, no romance, gratuitous sex, snuggle puppies, smooch pals, sweethearts, boyfriends, girlfriends, lovers, or f**k buddies. Season 9 is going to be all about the action, good guys vs bad guys, the old, classic comic book formula."

Personally, I think that it would be sort of boring without the speculation and controversy concerning who loves who the most. That, for me, is at least 25% of the entertainment of the show.
 
Given the history of the show and the connections all the characters share it would be impossible to have Buffy the Vampire Slayer without romantic relationships factoring somehow.
 
I agree. Although I would hate to see plot go out the window in favor for overemphasis on 'ships. That's what fanfic is for! 😉 [I'm actually bored right now watching Angel mid-season 3.]
 
I think it would be great. It might actually give the comics some time to find a story line that is a bit more fluid and easier to follow, although I would prefer to have a steady, normal, no drama relationship (because lets face it, relationships are reality).

I like the idea of action over drama. Yes, the shipping aspect would be missed, but I don't think Joss would have a problem being able to be interesting without all the same old relationship drama. Some of my favourite storylines involve the gang's friendship, Buffy's sisterly duties to her sister, and the father daugter relationship with Giles. Yes, I enjoyed watching the Spuffy journey and Tillow was truly beautiful, but to be honest I can't stand the angst of a lot of relationships that are depicted in media.

Romance and sexual tension create drama and excitement; that's why every single show/entity out there has some in it. I think Season 9 would fall flat in a hurry if Joss went in this direction.

Mm. I can see the argument for more action, less romantic-y goodness, but I still think relationships are very important. Sure, shipping can get out of hand sometimes and take over one's enjoyment of the story, but IMO, relationships definitely have a huge impact on the growth of the characters. Would Buffy be the same if she and Angel had never been an item? Or if she had never been with Riley, or Spike? What about Willow and Tara's time together? Xander and Anya? People bring out different sides in each other. They learn about themselves and what they're capable of. They connect, you know? I think having characters form relationships or fall in love is as important to the story as the action is.

Also, they're fun. 😀

I get where you're coming from here, but the same could be said about their friendships. Would Xander really be the same without Buffy in his life? Would Buffy be the same without Giles? Or Giles without Buffy for that matter?

I wouldn't want to never see shipping, or romantic relationships again on Buffy, but just one season without romantic interests would really give us some time to see what made Buffy a great show to begin with - the relationships between the scoobs is something that I would love to see more of. Perhaps without romance we could see a slow, steady and heartwarming rekindling of Buffy and Giles relationship. Or some time with just the core fore researching with donuts with Xander cracking jokes and Buffy making silly speech mistakes.

I think they 'have' to have the romantic entanglements considering the media. The 'ships are what most people are drawn to/revolve around and trying to maintain an audience from month to month (at best) versus week to week, the audience must be baited and hooked; the best way to do this is via the 'ship. Essentially a series of one-offs for months on end with no substantial drawing power than action would suffer.

I agree wholeheartedly with you on wanting to see the Scoobies reconnect and go try and reclaim some of what made them pure magic. The thing about that is though is the Scoobies of the earlier seasons were awash in romantic entanglements: Willow/Xander, Xander/Buffy, Buffy/Angel, Willow/Oz, Cordy/Xander, Giles/Jenny.

I think the key is finding the balance again. We can't have a comic of pure romance nor can we have one without it.

It would be unrealistic and pretty uninteresting to have a Buffyverse with no romance. But I do wish these poor kids could just date each other without every relationship having to be prophesied by the gods of Olympus themselves and sung by choirs of angels. Can't they just get dinner and go to a show or something?

Personally I think Buffy and Xander would have been far better off without hooking up with Spike and Anya respectively. Bangel wasn't only hugs and puppies either, to put it mildly. And yes, Bangel made for some great drama (well, until S3 when it became incredibly boring, IMO) but a good writer shouldn't rely so much on relationships to create drama, unless they are writing romance, of course. I think that a season without much emphasis on romance could be just the doctor ordered for the BtVS characters but it would never happen because it's much easier to just string shippers along than writing quality drama without that.

Looking at the reactions to the last few issues, seems to me that Bangel vs Spuffy is a way bigger deal to many a fan than anything else happening in the comics and I am sure Joss knows that and will milk it until he can. Willow's romantic life is a total mess too. Xander/Dawn gives total "we hooked them up so we can kill one of them" vibes but even if that doesn't happen they will probably be in the background in S9. So it's not so much that a moratorium is absolutely required, more like the feeling that if I am to choose between the lack of romantic relationships and the totally crappy ones we have gotten in the last three seasons, I would pick the moratorium without hesitating for a second.

It sounds like something Joss would do just for Giggles.

Most everyone forgets that the original "Brahm Stokers: Dracula"
suffers greatly in adaptations to the stage...guess why?
Not enough sex. But then again when it first hit the stage it was billed as, "The greatest love story ever told."
That was in the early 1900's and concepts of love and sex were much different then, but...

I think this would be interesting to try because "everyone" say's it wouldn't work.

I totally agree! I think that Joss could easily pull it off. Besides, it seems like something Joss would do to twist everything on it's head.
