Thats what we are told anyway...although I don't think we ever actually had snakes...but it makes a great story!
 
Did anybody see "Brotherhood of the Wolf?" It's a French historical/suspense/semi-horror thing supposedly based on local legends about a giant man eating wolf (why don't they call them woman eating wolf or whatever, 'cause it's always the pretty girls they go after). Not a bad movie, and more mystery than horror
 
This is kind of funny, but this past Halloween, I wrote a short scary story about one of my friends. I got chills writing it, and now I can't sleep at night with my closet doors open...
 
I jokingly told my son once the old Bill Cosby story about the monsters that lived under his bed, and just a few months ago he accused me of telling it just to keep him in bed at night.

The first time I saw The Grudge, in the back of my mind I was thinking, "Come on! Buffy could kick this thing's ass!"

Behind the pure creepy terror, that is.

Thats what I kept saying too...I just couldn't buy that she couldn't just pummel the thing!

Oh, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed that she was playing a different character, it was just after 7 seasons of watching her kick butt every week, it was harder to suspend disbelief and accept that she wasn't running to Giles instead of that detective and then beating the crud out of the ghosty thing.
 
I can't really say that...I went with two friends but they HATE Buffy so I don't really know why I went since I hate scary movies!
 
Irish Ghost stories and Japanese Ghost stories have a surprising amount in common, weirdly. Old Irish and Japanese stories are unusual because they don't tend to have any clear moral. European and American stories usually have a clear narrative structure and a lesson to be learned,

eg.

Dude sells soul to Devil, Dude dies horribly, now Dude haunts the place. And the moral of the story is: don't sell your soul, kids.

Vs.

A man walking home late at night is thrown from his horse. The horse won't go any further, and the man sees why. There's a figure by the road, but it's just a shadow that has no features. Eventually, he summons the courage to walk past it. It follows him home silently... and that's it. There's no moral to the story, except that evil is out there, and it likes to freak you out now and then.

Silent Hill, by the way, is a terror like no other. Man, you'll never sleep again in your whole life.

That's why I love old Irish tales and myths.
Hmm. Define "scary".

Truthfully, I've never been downright terrified while actually watching a movie. However, some of the better movies stay in my subconscious and will seriously freak me out days or weeks later when I start letting my imagination get carried away (which I do often for entertainment).

However, tonight I saw "Cloverfield" and that movie was extremely tense and for several scenes at a time I felt scared for the characters. The movie was very creepy, it had a few "Boo!" moments, and basically had several types of "horror", some psychological. It was a very impressive movie, I was surprised at how concerned I was for the characters.
 
Hostel was the worst I saw. I can handle "scary" but not torture. Had to stop watching it. Yuck.
 
Due to watching IT as a child that instantly became my most scariest film. I only watched Part 1 and a small part of part 2 when they are adults. About 14 years after watching IT the first time I finally bought the DVD and watched it all the way through. The ending made it a bit ridiculous but I still had trouble watching the first part.
 
Well this is not really a movie but when I was younger they used to have these Slim Jim commercials on where someone would eat a Slim Jim and then he would be alive in their stomach along with all of the other food in there and Slim Jim would fight the other food. They were really dumb commercials, needless to say they scared me to death. I don't know why but whenever I would walk past Slim Jims at the grocery store I would be so freaked out. And I would NEVER eat them. =)

As for movies, Psycho really scared me to the point that I would not close my eyes in the shower. And When A Stranger Calls freaked me out because at the time I saw it I still did a lot of babysitting for this couple with really big windows.
 
OMG! I was on youtube one night reading comments on the video I was watching, and one of them really freaked me out!

It was something like this...
There was a girl babysitting a little boy. The boy got really scared and started crying, so the babysitter called his parents.
Father: Hello?
Babysitter: Hi, this is the babysitter. I was wondering if I could possibly cover the big clown statue in the hallway. It's scaring the baby, and he won't go to sleep.
Father: Get out of the house!
Babysitter: What? Why?
Father: We don't have a clown statue!

Then the comment said that if you didn't post it 10 times, the clown would come kill you that night in your sleep just like he did the boy and the babysitter. It scared me to death! I don't know why it did though. It was just a comment on a video! Things like that always scare me though.

I have heard that story before. And yeah I hate when you get email forwards like that and you feel like you have to send them.

LOTS of people think IT is a terrifying movie, but I watched it and found it to be the most painful, boring, ridiculous, stupid, unscary four hours I've experienced in my life. There was potential in there, somewhere, but the movie completely lacked any buildup to any scares, and buildup is the key, you can't just show something scary happen as soon as a scene starts and expect it to frighten anyone but younger viewers.

I completely loathed the movie and I wonder if the book is better and scarier, but I kind of don't want to read it just because the movie was so unbelievably lame. The acting was so bad, the script and dialogue were absolutely atrocious, and all the "scares" where more funny than anything.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with someone being scared of it if they were scared because it traumatized them as a child, but still...this movie is horrible.

It definitely needs to be remade, and they should leave out that unintentionally hilarious spider.
