Shoes on or off?

The Netherlands is mostly shoes-on too. Some people just ask you to take your shoes off, but most people don't.
I think it's awkward, especially when someone has sweaty feet 😉 And I agree with Cait, a doormat isn't that expensive.
 
I take my shoes off, with reference to what the other scandinavians that has posted here said. 🙂 But I would def. join the custom off the home/country I was in. I think it would be very rude not to do so.
 
We have doormat, but we still take our shoes off. To tell you the thruth, it depends on a family. If someone comes in my house with their shoes on, I don't make them take their shoes, but most of the people take their shoes off by their self because they do it in their own home.
 
I'm in England, and I find it differs from house to house. I'd always been taught to take me shoes off inside, but some of my friends just keep their shoes on in their houses.

No their not. I have one myself. But in case you think that a doormat is all that's needed to get your shoes clean you can't be living in a place there your shoes get very dirty. Which is why I can understand if Cait have trouble getting the whole deal. But come live here for a year and I'm sure you'll change your mind. Maybe I shouldn't be so sure since a lot of people from Europe don't take their shoes off inside.

So that you think the same surprised me. I didn't think it was so different from here. You guys that get a real autum and winter, you still wear your shoes/boots inside?
 
I live in the US (this may seem like a cliche to those of you who have heard about "them Arkansas hillbillies") and, when I'm not in town or at school, rarely wear shoes. I take them off pretty much as soon as I get in the door (or to my bedroom) and don't put them on until I'm ready to leave the house. I don't usually wear shoes wandering around in the yard either unless I'm going to be outside for a long period of time.

I rarely take my shoes off first thing when in someone else's home though (unless it's a relative and I don't want to dirty their floor), not unless I'm going to be staying awhile. I'm never sure if it's okay because not everyone does the same thing I do.

My sister and Dad wear shoes in the house most of the time. It always bothers me because they'll track dirt on the carpet and put their shoes on the couch or on my bed. Even with a doormat, one can't always get all the mud off.
 
I live in Ohio and we always take our shoes off. It's much more comfortable.
 
I find it so wierd that people don't take them off, and actually never thought people might be wierd about me walking around with socks on compared to shoes. Cultures, eh.

I don't walk around bare-foot anywhere unless it's at home. The only time I do shoes off is when I'm asked to. I'm very picky about that, lol. Feet are gross enough as it is and I'd rather not step in something barefooted 😛 I mean, yeah, 98% of people do vaccum/clean their floors, but still.

I live on the east coast of the US and most people don't care, but some are really insistent on shoes-off. I usually just ask if I should take them off when I walk in because I figure it's common courtesy.
 
Im from Engalnd and live in a student house so i leave my shoes on until i get to my room but i take them off then and i always take them off at someone else's house as i feel ts just politer that way, don't really want to drag dirt around the house with me.
 
It's pretty uncomfortable to take my shoes off in someone's house that I don't know, even if I'm asked. BUT, when I'm staying over at any of my friends, I end up being in socks anyways. (sw)

Still depends on what part of Europe, exactly. I happen to live in the part of Germany with the mildest climate of all (Nether Rhine region of Northrhine-Westfalia, close to the Dutch border). It's not too uncommon to go through a whole winter without a single snow day here... so that's gotta be very different from Scandinavian autumn/winter. 😉

I need to ask since a lot of people keep saying bare-foot. Is that the same for you as having socks on? At least here it's a huge difference. Not many people walk around bare-foot in their shoes when it's not summer. I wouldn't be comfortable walking around bare-foot inside all the time either. Very, very far from it. Maybe it's the difference in weather you have difficulty to really grasp.

My guess is that the places there you don't take off your shoes are a lot dirtier than the ones there you do. 😉
 
i'm from france, and we have muddy times too!
i hate taking off mt shoes in someone else's house.
i do it in asian restaurants, and at home, and in family, were they are clippers for me, but when i'm invited in someone's house, for a dinner or a dance, usually i put beautiful clothes, with beautiful schoes that match the clothes, so i don't want to end bare footed, ruining my stockings, or with pink bunny clippers (bad for the "femme fatale look, i can tell you!)
iff someone ask me to take off my shoes, i'll do it, or if i see a line of shoes at the entrance of the house, but i don't like that.
my friends ar at home in my house, they keep their shoes and do anything stupid they want to, and i clean after they leave.
if i don't want to clean, i can live alone.

When you say "clippers" do you mean "slippers"? lol.
When I am at my friends house I usually will but if it is my first time somewhere I ask if they want me to take them off and keep it in mind for the next time. I don't take my shoes off though unless asked or if I have been there a lot. I am weird when it comes to those things 😉

Well, I don't wear socks unless I have shoes on. They annoy me 😛 Besides that, I usually wear sandals so there's no need for socks.

My guess is that the places there you don't take off your shoes are a lot dirtier than the ones there you do. 😉

lol, I think the only time I'll take them off without being asked is if the person has white carpet.
