Should Ethan Rayne had been used more?

Ethan Rayne was such an under used villain. The Giles eps with Ethan were my favorite of the show. The Dark Age and A New Man were great eps!

I wish Rayne had become a regular villain when they didn't show the regular villains of the show. Robin Sachs and Anthony Stewart Head had such great chemistry in their episodes together.

Definately under-used. He was a great villain and what I loved about him most is that you knew that he wasn't going to get away with whatever plan he had, he was always going to lose. Plus he was hilarious. I think I would have liked it if he had come around to the good side somehow and got utilised for some knowledge or witchcraft- something along those lines.

Oh lord I adored dear old Ethan!

Just loved all his appearances, especially when it brought the Ripper out in Giles. 😀

powerful new banner, though I kind of miss dapper snowwhite-angel Spike :)
Oh yeah he definitely had the potential to be used a lot more. When he first appeared, I remember making a mental note to myself that this guy was going to be an important villain later on. How wrong I was.

It's so sad that the last we see of Ethan was in S4 'A New Man' getting carted off by the Initiative (I mean, the Intitiative? C'mon!) when there three glorious seasons left where he could've been used.

That's one of the reasons that I like the computer game 'BtVS: Chaos Bleeds' because it has Ethan Rayne returning to cause chaos (what else?) in Sunnydale. It's not canon but I kind of wish it was.

Imagine the havoc this guy could've unleashed upon the Scoobies in S6! That would've been something to see- him messing with this bunch of screwed up adults that used to thwart him back when they were in high school.
Forget The Trio or Wrak corrupting Willow- Ethan would've been fantastic, even a Big Bad of that season. 😀
Plus it would've brought Giles back sooner. 🙂

What a wonderful idea - it would have added some zing to what was a rather aggressively depressing season.

It was criminal to only have him in 2 episodes! I would have loved to have him as a running character - not quite a villain. I love Ripper and Ethan!

He was in 3:

1): The Dark Age (S2)
2): Band Candy (S3)
3): A New Man (S4)

I agree, he was under used. It would have been great if he came back in S6 or 7 to cause some more mayhem. Or if he had to team up with the scoobies against another baddy just to protect his own ass. He was a fun villain and allowed us to explore more of Giles' character.

He was a fun character, so why not.

thetopher's idea isn't bad.
Think I would prefer him being used like a long time player, in the background, during a season.

Having him come back for a few more single episode arcs, and getting beaten each time, would probably be a bit repetitive.

I hadn't thought about it before but like sk says, he was fun so why not. With the idea in my head I do like it. But as mentioned - having him come back for single episodes, beaten over and over would have been repetitive and boring. But yes, as a longer time villain I think he would have been amazing. Plus it would have made things personal for Giles.

No, he shouldnt have been. Because he would have eventually turned "good" and been part of the Scooby Gang. He was too rich of a character to hang around and not become part of the group, and then he would have been ruined. Whenever one of the Scooby Gang would question why their 'friend' did something bad he would say 'hello, i worship chaos' and gotten a laugh and been forgotten.

I think he could have been used a bit more. Perhaps he could have become one of the seasons 'Big Bads' somehow - though it would probably be easier to imagine him teamed with someone else.

I agree that he was under used to. His character was fun to watch. He also could have shared some stories of Giles and his Ripper days🙂

I agree, him and Giles were great together, he could've been used at least a little bit more but not too much to be overused. Especially because we don't really get to see the personal side of Giles or what he was like before very often at all, I really enjoyed finding out his backstory as the Ripper. I really liked how they used him in the Chaos Bleeds video game too as the villain.

Maybe a couple more episodes. They could have done a two-parter to have rounded his character off. But I guess 4 episodes is decent for a villain who was never a main bad guy. Some characters can make a greater lasting impression through lesser appearances. But I can see both sides really.
