Angel = soulful
Angelus = soulless

Spike = soulless (or nearing it)
William = soulful?

I know Angel was born the name Liam, so technically, he would be soulful too, but the show's called Angel.

What about Spike? His name came from his means of torture, I believe, railroad spikes. He got the name shortly after his soul extraction. So when he got his soul back, should we have called him William?

Buffy had called him william some and it seemed like he liked it but he never really forced the name out like he wanted to be called that like angel had done.... So yes maybe he should have been called william if only he would have made it more obvious that he liked to be called that and to be thought of as decent...

Good points. I remember Buffy calling him William in season six at their breakup using it to stress her concern. So maybe it's like that? Only used in the most extreme cases?

You are probably right about Spike being the one to acknowledge it, just how Angel stressed being called Angel instead of Angelus.

It's kinda like when my mom gets really mad at me and calls me by my first, middle and last name...hehe

I think Spike still being "Spike" is to show he's NOT like Angel. My opinion anyhow! xD

True. Maybe Spike's intense dislike (borderline hate? Or does Spike hate Angel?) for Angel made him wish to shy away from the two black and white names.

Oh,well,in BTVS S2, Buffy called Angelus Angel (confusing😛). What I mean is that the Angel-Angelus thing is a fan thing. In BTVS they called the soulful and soulless versions Angel. We,the fans,started calling the souless vamp Angelus to make it easier and less confusing.
Then,in ATS,the writers started calling the soulless version Angelus.

It's the same as Willow in S6,the Scoobies didn't call her Darth Rosemberg.

Or,Puppet Angel...the gang didn't call him that,we call him that.

If we want to distingue soulless Spike from soulful Spike by calling the soulful one William would be confusing,because William is the human version. We should just make up a new name😛

Is the first mention of the name Angelus by a character in Angel? I'm just curious...maybe someone knows the first episode it was mentioned.

well angelus was his evil vamp name and angel was his good vamp name while spike's evil vamp name was spike but his human name was william.Just because angel's name changed when he got his soul back doesn't mean that spike's name should've changed.If spike changed back to william then angel should've been called liam since that was his human name before he became a vamp. to answer your question no spike was fine with the name weither he was evil or not. it suited him.

It was mentioned before...we didnt' make up the name😛.
Guess the first time was in 'Angel'...I'll search

Giles: There's nothing about Angel in the texts, but it suddenly
occurred to me that it's been ages since I've read the diaries of any of
the watchers before me.
Diaries of watchers?. How did the watcher know about Angel's tatoo?...I'm thinking about something nasty but I won't say it

Giles: There's mention some two hundred years ago in Ireland of, of
Angelus, the one with the angelic face.
There it is,the first mention of Angelus.

Giles acted like he had no idea about who Angelus was. WTF?!. In ATS S4,Wes even knew that 1789 Angelus was in Prusia and Giles,the big old watcher,didn't know who The Scoruge Of Europe was?...hmmm...

Buffy: They got that right.
Definitely...sorry,couldn't help it.

Giles: Does this, uh, Angel have, um, a tattoo behind his right
shoulder?
Ok,again,how did the watcher know?,is the tatoo something important and that's why the other watcher knew?.If it was so important,why didn't Giles know?

Ok,I'm going off topic😛.Sorry. Let's call soulful version of Spike, Billy😛. 'Billy' sounds as girly as 'Angel'.It's fair😀

Angelus was first mentioned in the Buffy episode "Angel" in which Giles was researching Angel's past in the watcher's diaries after Buffy found out that Angel was a vampire. To answer Cordy Chase's question.

Much in the same way that both vampires reacted differently to the soul, they reacted differently to the name issue-Angel was much more ashamed of who he'd been than Spike, so it stands to reason that Angel would be more eager to distinguish the difference between him and Angelus. Did that make any sense? LOL

Jacklyn: It did make sence😀. But I'll call him Billy anyway. Spike is a tough name and Angel is too dorky and girly...Soulful Spike is Billy to me now lol😛.

Maybe they knew about the tatoo because Angelus used to ravage his victims shirtless....there's something to ponder.

LOL-Are you kidding? That's not something to ponder, it's something to get a good mental picture of! LOL...maybe not the ravishing, but definitely the shirtless part 😉

LMAO!!!.That or...well,..maybe Buffy wasn't the first Slayer that had the pleasure to meet Angelus....no,wait!,or Angelus and the watcher had...ern,...some quality time together😛
