Should the show have ended after "The Gift"?

She makes a suicide attempt in Bargaining Part 2 I believe...on top of the tower she jumped from where the portal opened in The Gift
 
This topic for me is kinda hard. Because it could've been a good ending for the show, it ended descent in the eppy. But yet Chosen was also good to, and then kinda not good. But if they ended it with The Gift, then we wouldn't have gotten some of our best episodes I think. So no I don' think they should've ended it with The Gift, they made the right choice in ending it with Chosen.
 
Although "The Gift" was one of my favorite episodes out of the show, I'm going with no here. I really liked the way Buffy was brought back in Season Six. I liked how all the characters went through dark times, and how she was slowly breaking from being brought back from heaven -- it had so much good angst.

Season Seven was terrific, I really think so, so NO. I'm glad Joss didn't end it there. 100% totally relieved.

I totally agree! While 'The Gift' was an awesome episode, there was so much more development of the characters that occured in s6 and 7, that it just wouldn't have seemed right. When season 5 ended, we were just seeing Spikes feelings for Buffy develop, Xander and Anyas feelings for each other deepen, and just getting used to the idea of Dawn. There was also the new responsibility Buffy had been given after Joyces death, that she was still trying to deal with. Sure, season 6 was a lot darker than the previous Buffys, but I think it was good. Buffys depression and refusal to cope was kinda annoying, but it also showed that she wasn't the superhero people made her out to be. She is only human. And it was good to see Tara and Dawn and Spike finding their own ways of fitting into the Scooby gang. And the dark Willow storyline was a nice change for Willow who had always been seen as the good girl. It also provided a good climax kinda thing to her forays of magic that started out in season 2.

And yeah, season 7 wasn't the best, I thought it kinda dragged on a bit until the very end. But it was still enjoyable, and I think the First made a very fitting final opponent. If this season hadn't gone ahead, we also wouldn't have seen the other side to Spike, the side that comforted her when she got kicke dout of the house, the side that wanted to protect her.

So, in short, the Gift rocked, but I think seasons 6 and 7 of Buffy made it even better! 😀
 
No. To me, Buffy's suicide jump signalled the end of her adolescence. The audience had yet to experience her deal with the tribulations of adulthood. I'm glad the show continued into Seasons 6 and 7.
 
i understand where you guys are coming from (the ones who wanted the show to end), but i didn't think for one second it should have ended with "the gift". season 6 was brilliant is so many aspects (not the willow one). it was an incredible journey for the character of buffy and other characters as well, but i will always think of it as the "buffy" season. i loved her character development and in that periof of my life, i could really relate.
as for season 7... true, in some aspects i do wish it were better (different more like it), but... still. "chosen" in my opinion was priceless. it was the perfect series finale and one of the best episodes (kinda ties with "becoming" in my book).
 
In no way should Buffy have ended with The Gift! It constantly amazes me how anyone can say that they didn't enjoy the last two seasons, they contained some of the standout episodes of the entire series, not to mention some of the best character development you could ever hope to see in a television show!

Now I would agree that season seven suffered a little from trying to get too much done and not focusing enough on what really mattered (too much of the potentials and Wood, not enough of the core scoobies) but it still made for a far superior conclusion to the series than season five did. Hell the destruction of the Hellmouth and Sunnydale alone makes that obvious!

The fifth season was a new beginning, not an ending. Chosen was the ULTIMATE ending! 😉
 
I contemplate that too. If it quit after 5 I would be angry that there was no more and I would be devastated that Buffy would be dead, forever.
6&7: The first time around I hated them because I thought Buffy and Angel would one day be together so any other relationships were just filler. I rewatched 6 and 7 right in a row and I appreciate them a lot more.
 
i think that "the gift" would have been a great series finale, but i love season 7 so much! (it's my favorite) i agree with Percy in that they should have made season 5 season 7. buffy's death would kind of just wrap up the whole show.
 
I would not have been left as satisfied if 'The Gift' had been the last episode of Buffy rather than 'Chosen'. 'The Gift' was a great episode, but left so many stories left untold. Plus, ending with the main character's death has never made me feel good at the end of the show, unlike the how I felt after 'Chosen' (sad that the show was over, but happy for the characters).

Throughout all seven years of the show, Buffy always wondered what it would be like to have a normal life; the type of life she would of had if she had not been called as the Slayer. To not finally get that would have made all her wondering if the life she was denied was better pointless. The only way to get the ending that Buffy deserved was for Buffy to go through seasons six and seven. And I wouldn't want to lose that for anything.
 
OMG there is just no way i would have ever wanted series 5 to be the ending, can you imagine the last ever episode of buffy not having a happy ending, and if it had ended that way i would have forever been worrying that the scoobs where going to die, even though i know technically they aren't real without buffy they would have almost certainly died so ifseries 5 had been the end then it would have been so depressing as it would mean all the characters wh've grown to love and adore would all have had likely had crappy, short lifes which means no happy ending for anyone.
Plus i quite liked series 6 it was very depressing but a program, if its going to be realistic needs to be depressing sometimes to reflect real life, and there is no way i would sacrifice OMWF because that was great, i loved all the songs and i still listen to them now i cant ever imagine not living without them!!!
And series 7 wasn't that bad, i loved it apart from the few mistakes and the lack of continuity it was still good mand even though it left a lot of questions open it did answer some long running questions and also sometimes its good not to know everything it means you can use your own imagination to find the answers, if we knew all the answers then we wouldnt have those serious debates that can split the boards in half, arguing against eachother in defence of their favourite characters/theories etc.

:dancing: Come on, Buffy should NOT have ended with season 5! There are so many great things happening in the last two seasons, episodes I would't miss for the world. Okey, so a lot of the episodes tend to be a bit boring, but overall I would not be as big Buffy fan as I am, without them.
okey, so the ending of the series aren't the best, but I think you should't think of the Buffy show with an overall view. Buffy isn't suppose to be that way. It's those prescious moments like when the gang stands up for Tara in season 5, Buffy realises shes going to win in season 7, Buffy gets the award for protector in season 4, Buffy dies in season 5, The musical-thing, the body, the one with all the silence, and so on.
This series have created magical moments in TV, and to look at it all in one sweep is a shame. The series should not have ended with "The gift".
 
Nah. I don't think Buffy should have ended with The Gift. I don't think it should have ended with Chosen either.

In a perfect world we'd all still be waiting for next week's new episode of Buffy.
 
I don't really have a good answer for this because I think about it in different ways. To me, The Gift was a much more powerful finale, a better finale and probably would of been a better series finale. However, I do love the happy ending and the hope that was seen in Chosen so I am glad the series ended with that one. I always wanted Buffy to be able to be free and happy, that's what she always wanted. On how the finale's affected me though, I cried during the Gift and it was very emotionally powerful to me. I didn't shed one tear during Chosen and thought it was so-so. The scene with the scoobies in the hall of the school seemed awkward and forced, and none of it affected me much (and this from a person that was Buffy obsessed since the movie in 92). I really never got attached to any of the potential slayers and didn't care much what happened to them, or if any of them lived or died. I cared about what happened to the core group, and to Faith, and I'm probably one of the few that kind of liked Kennedy (she was no more annoying than anyone in s7).
The first 5 seasons I feel were the very best, especially seasons 2, 3 and 5. I'm very happy the show went on though because I enjoyed season 6, especially Bargaining, Afterlife, OMWF, Tabula Rasa, Wrecked, & Seeing Red through Grave. I thought having Willow go dark was a great idea and the 4 part finale (I always considered it a 4 parter since each epi started right where the last left off and I think it happened over the course of 2 days) was excellent. In fact if the show had to end early, Grave would of been a good finale. Except then we would be left with the Spike cliffhanger. Season 7 is probably my least fave season. Reasons: the annoying potentials I couldn't seem to care about, not many episodes just focusing on the scoobies, too much First stuff and too early, constant Buffy speeches, plotholes, the setting seeming to constantly be inside the Summers house, specifically the living room, and just lackluster episodes. The Wood subplot was never exciting to me. It had some good episodes though and ended nicely.

exactly what I think. I like Kennedy too.
I actually like the way Seasons 6 and 7 played out. I loved "Chosen" as well. It was an awesome series finale IMO. I especially loved the last scene with the Sunnydale sign and all.

I disagree. The older Buffy became, the less important the Scoobies were to her life. Both Spike and the Potentials were more important to Buffy as a young adult. Spike represented her first adult romance or relationship. And the Potentials represented Buffy's new role as an adult with responsibilities and as an authority figure. They also represented the possible change in the Slayer line.

I didn't really see how the Scoobies could remain so important in Buffy's life, as they did when she was younger. Season 4's "Restless" foreshadowed the breakup of the Scooby dynamic. And to be honest, it is rare for high school or college friends to remain very close when they become adults.

Because it would have been impossible for Buffy to beat the First without Willow. Maybe Xander and Giles have become less useful over the years to her, but Willow became more and more useful to her as time passed...

But Season 7 wasn't just about beating the First. It was about Buffy learning about adulthood. One of the lessons an individual learns is that childhood friendships do not always last . . . or remain the same.
