Should the show have ended after "The Gift"?

Nooooooo Nooooo Noooo I mean I know that it was a natural ending to the show but I really think that if we had ended it there then the whole of Season 6 would have been missed, I loved some of the episodes in Season 6 and I thought that the evil Willow story was great.

I know that the beginning of Season 6 was quite pants and but once into it I loved it!

Season 6 is awesome. No way would I want to be without it. 7 ain't as good, but it's still a long way from bad. It's still Buffy, and it's still fab entertainment. Hell, it shouldn't have ended at Chosen. I wish it was still going. I miss my Xander and Willow and Giles and my little Dawny.

Boo shucks at television and contracts and reality screwing up our fun. lol
 
well... i sort of think it was a better ending than chosen.

BUT if it ended at season 5...

we wouldn't have the musical episode.

We wouldn't have "storyteller" (in my opinion, one of the funniest episodes).

We wouldn't have met the trio.

We wouldn't have season eight comics.

so i guess by what we gained out of it, im happy it continued.

But i do remember being somewhat dissapointed with "Chosen". Then watching the entire series again and finishing it like a couple of weeks ago, I def like Chosen a lot better than the first time isaw it.
 
I don't think it should have because I didn't want 'my hero' to die. And I love season 6 and 7 so very much.
 
nah it shouldnt have because although it was the most dramatic touching finale we wouldnt have season 6 with the musical or season 7 with the sytche.
 
It would have made a great finale of the series, at least as good as "Chosen"... BUT:

How can anyone hate S6? Were it not so that I really love the high school setting, S6 might be my favorite (as it is, is ranks as my 3rd fave). And I'm not even going for the obvious "there wouldn't have been OMWF"... Dark Willow was THE best Big Bad, period. Watching her descent into darkness, her coping with addiction and the breakup of what was the most lovable relationship in the entire Buffyverse were breathtaking, I wouldn't want to miss any of that; actually, this got to me so heavily on first airing that I had to stop watching the show for a coupla weeks as I couldn't bear it anymore (and not because I thought it sucked, far from it: because it hit home like a cannonball and was just so utterly realistic!). How can any other Big Bad compete with one that evolved most convincingly out of a character we've grown to love as a key Scooby for 5 1/2 years? And there's no reason I can think of why Willow would make that step over the line than to bring back a friend from the dead.

I also don't get it how anyone can think Buffy should have "gotten over it" sooner. For goodness sake, she was ripped out of heaven, by her friends, awakening buried alive - in a coffin problably bathed in the stench of her own decay - and digging herself out of her own grave! I think she handled it marvellously fine and in record speed, especially since all the real world stuff (money shortage etc.) was coming on top of it. Were I in her shoes, I would probably not have lasted 24 hours after coming back before killing myself (trying to jump from the tower, again, seems absolutely sane and logical to me in her situation...) and/or going bloody-vengeance-amuck on my "friends". Adjusting to this experience at all, and then so quickly (a point could be made considering "Normal Again" the point of acceptance, thus it would be a mere few couple of months - and that's pretty much overnight for something of that caliber, IMO) to me shows that she really is of more-than-human mettle. Had she sorted it any sooner, it would probably have revoked my suspension of disbelief... how could you ever relate to a main char who acts so emotionally invulnerable? Bet you weren't expecting her to go "Ok, see your point, bye then" *turns and goes on patrol not ever wasting another thought to her relationship with Angel, because, well you know, it's over* at the end of S3, and that would in my eyes still have been a million times more believable than having her effortlessly adjust to The Gift/Bargaining.
 
No I don't think so. I haven't seen S7 and I'm still missing 4 more episodes of S5, but S6 is just to kick ass. I think Chosen was a good finale. (I have seen bits and pieces of S7)
 
Indeed, Season Five was supposed to be the final season. Watch the 'previously on Buffy The Vampire Slayer' bit at the beginning of 'The Gift' and tell me it wasn't supposed to be the final episode of Buffy ever? But no, I don't agree that it should have ended there. I'm not a massive fan of Season Six to be honest, it was far too depressing for my tastes, but I do like Season Seven, that we got to see the Scoobies rise up and become the adult warriors we see in the comics.
 
I think if The Gift had been the last ever episode it would have been a perfect ending- I mean constantly throughout the show we are reminded that Slayers die young, that they never really live past their twenties and so inevitably Buffy died in her 20s too, but the nice sweet touch is that it was her choice- she wasn't killed or beaten by some beastie. It was her choice and that gave it a feeling of peaceful finality. That everything had come full circle and Buffy was finally able to rest.

BUT and this is a big but, as much as it would have been a perfect ending, leaving it there...there was too much story to tell. I mean there's so much to be told now (as currently proven by the season 8 comics) but if you consider the final scene of The Gift and think of it as the last ever scene, you know we'd all have been going 'Yes, but what will they do NOW? How will they survive? What about Dawn? And Giles? And is Tara gonna be okay? And what about Anya and Xander's engagement?'.

I think if it had ended at season 5, Buffy Between the Lines would have been forced to fill that gap and not stop at twelve episodes and just keep on going writing a season 6, 7, 8....just so I wouldn't have withdrawal symptoms. Haha

i like what joyce just said in that first part. it was a pretty kick-ass finale, and it would have been great to go out that way. but still, no season 6? ...naw, not worth it :silly:. and again, like joyce said, too much left to be told.

my personal interpretation, partially based on my own opinions, is not so much that people think she should have gotten over it sooner. i agree that going to jump off the tower again, for instance, was a logical thing to do after she came back. however, it did get kind of annoying to watch her whine and cry about how hard it was to be back from heaven. im not back from heaven; i cant relate. so she's just being whiny and annoying for reasons i cant fully comprehend (probably ever, unless magic does exist 😉). plus, we watch her make bad decisions, and dont like her doing that to herself. plus, after making said decisions, she whines about it all some more. its like dawn. when she whines, it comes from a decent, teenage-hormone place sometimes, but when she screams "get out get out GET OUT!!!!!", most peope just want her to shut the heck up! basically, i think people, including me, dont necessarily think it made sense for buffy to get over it sooner, but just wanted her to stop whining.
 
I loved how Season 5 ended. It was perfect. But this is because I KNEW S-6 was coming. I didn't watch BtVS or Ats while they were in production. Well, except for Angel Season 5. Anyway, I started watching Buffy just the year it ended. I was home sick from work one day, & just wandered upon an eppy while surfing. I enjoyed it! - then watched it again the next day, & the next... and then I had to buy all the DVDs!!! So of course I knew S-5 wasn't the "last season".

But what got me excited was wondering how they'd "bring Buffy back from the dead". I loved the whole Buff-bot idea. I loved the fact that Buffy was laid to rest - finally found peace - & was "ripped out of heaven" by her loving friends. It was never discussed why they were all so sure that Buffy was in a hell dimension, but they all thought that, & were determined to "set her free". Was it pure selfishness on the scoobys part??

This, PLUS ... Season 6 is my favorite season. :: vampire
 
as much as i like the gift for a finale im glad it didnt end on it i love season 6 purely because of how dark the season was. i dont think season 5 was perticually goof all together but for a finale the gift would have worked, although i am a big fan of the last few episodes of season 7 which had a totally awesomes finale so all round im glad it ended at 7 where it did even though it left so many questions to be answered...
 
The Gift was an amazing episode but it wouldn't have given me enough closure. While Glory was my favorite villain, she wasn't a good "final" villain like The First was. Plus, there was no Xander/Willow interaction in The Gift! And while I didn't care much for season 7...season 6 had a lot of good to offer...
 
absolutely not, the more buffy the better.

Plus you have Spike breaking down at the end of it...and all the curiosity about how that would play out given an opportunity, and way to many loose ends with Dawn and everything else.

It might have been a cool near perfect ending for a slayer, but not for Buffy as I hope to see it. definately not a good ending for the series as a whole.

I'd still be wondering how everyone dealt with it. I like cliff hangers because there is a chance you'll claw your way back off the cliff, not because of the chance of a fall and a sudden end. (I have to admit though, I like the not knowing sometimes which way the cliff hanger turns out.)
 
No. Though I often wonder a fanfic\virtual series scenario where Gellar left the show (unhappy about the proposed developments with Spike maybe) and Eliza Dushku became the lead would be an interesting possibility. Though I think Season Six was a brilliant way of pushing the envelope and fan expectations. (You want Buffy and Spike together? Here you go). Season Seven is a slightly disappointing step back from the edginess the production team tried the previous year, but props to Joss and crew for trying to end the show in great style.
 
Although I believe Season 5 to be the best season so obviously the show went downhill, I don't believe it was so far gone that I'd rather Season 6/7 never existed. Think of all we'd miss out on. And though The Gift was the best season finale I prefer the ending of Chosen, far more fitting for Buffy I thought.
