Should Xander and Anya had gotten back together?

Do you think Xander and Anya should have gotten back together before her death in the series finale? Do you think it would have made a difference?

I was never a fan of them, but they were nice together, so I would have liked it. It was probably better that they didn't get back together for real before she died though. Too sad, and it would have been too Tillow, for them to get back together and then for Anya to die.

But if she hadn't died and Xander and her would have found a reason to stick around each other (maybe they all headed for the Cleveland Hellmouth to patch up the survivors and Buffy and the scooby gang planned for the future, and Anya decided to tag along) I think they would eventually have gotten back together. It was such a open ending to their relationship.

I think Xander and Anya were well on their way to getting back together, and if it had happened before Anya's death it would have been way too tragic
I agree with Skyt, if they had got back together before she died then it would have been to much for Xander to handle in my opinion, and if she hadn't of died that they probably would have got back anyway.

I remember answering a question like this a long time ago (can't remember it exactly) but it was something along the lines of Anya's death and should Xander and her have got back together in the final episode but she still died. And a few of the answers said the same that it would have been to much. Funny enough as well a few wanted Angel and Buffy to get back together in the final episode.

But i think it ended OK the way it did. Anya probably deserved a bit more of a "dramatic" scene than what she got, but i don't think they should have got back together if the outcome was to be that she died.

For all intents and purposes, though, Xander and Anya did get back together, possibly not as "together" as they were just before the big break up, but I have no doubt that, if she had survived, they would have been an actual couple again, and would have shared a much more mature relationship due to the greater understanding that they were developing in Season 7. Previously, they were not much more than a couple of teenagers, in heat all the time. They both grew up in Season 7.

I was literally about to type the words "For all intents and purposes" and then go on to say basically what you just said, WA!! Good thing I read this first. 🙂

But yes, this.

I totally agree. Even if they weren't an official couple, they were together in "Touched"... They chose to spend what they thought might be their last night alive together. I think that says alot about the state of their relationship.

yeah, i think they were "together" in every way but naming it, i guess. i think it made her death a lot sadder that they basically had gotten back together.
i also personally like that anya's death was so quick you could almost miss it. i just think it made it more powerful and more poetic that way.

I think they kind of did, without the words. They both loved each other dearly and had it not been for the death of Anya they probably wouldve made it official eventually.

No, Anya should have left Xander and Sunnydale. Then move to Los Angeles and join AtS where she would have been even more awesome AND NOT DIE IN THE LAST FRIGGIN EPISODE

Caps lock...off 😀 lol

As far as I'm concerned that relationship ended how it should have. Anya died a hero and her and Xander were on good terms. In multiple relationships in the show it ends up being the one who isn't inclined to be heroic who ends up being heroic. Xander was always heroic, or at least he tried to be whereas Anya was always hesitant and well...Anya. But in the end she died to save Andrew's life. We see a paralell of this in the Buffy/Spike relationship. Buffy was always the hero, that's what she was born to do and Spike was a vampire without a soul for most of the series. Sure, he was heroic sometimes but he wasn't exactly inclined to be from the beginning. In the end he died to save the world and be a hero. So there's an interesting paralell between the relationships.

But before I get too off track, I do believe that the Xander/Anya relationship ended how it should have. I personally am a big fan of the two of them. Therefore I probably would have liked it to go someplace different but Joss satisfied me and in the end I didn't mind. The two of them came out on top and better their relationship end in a good place than in a bad place.

Like others have pointed out, they basically were back together by the end of it. They were obviously still in love with each other and that's what matters to me. I loved how they were showing such affection for each other towards the end (such as Xander patting sleeping Anya's head and them calling each other "sweetie" and such) even though that made it even more heartbreaking to watch, since I knew what was gonna happen to Anya in the end. 🙁

I really hoped that the two would get togehter, they completed each other so perfectly, but it just shouldn't happen!!

I actually think they both should have died in the final battle trapped in a collapsed room in a scene similar to the one Wesley & Fred/Illyria got in Angel.

I agree with others here that I kind of thought they were together - because of what happened in Touched - and there was obviously strong feelings from both of them. Xander calls Anya "his girl" right at the end 🙁

The one thing I dont get though is he's just lost the love of his life - I know it was inevitable not all would survive but it would be a big shock and loss for him. And yet right at the end Xander is making jokes about the mall. I know its his character and there needs that light touch right at the end to encapsualte the whole show, but it just didnt sit right to me. He's lost Anya, its all very fresh and hes joking like this. This is why sometimes Xander does grate on me.
