The writers gave Xander an out, with him going travelling after Graduaution, should he have done that and not come back at all, or maybe just come back when he was really needed (guest starred like ASH)?

I'm glad he came back, because I love him and Anya, and I'm glad that he was the one to save the world at the end of season six.

Really he was the one that beat life, more than any of them. He ends up with a good job and nice place to live so it made perfect sense that it was him.

Plus it's nice to see one of these characters being able to handle the daily things, like bills and going to a steady job, that he actually enjoys. I'm not sure if that would have been do-able with any other character.

I do think he should have maybe stayed on his "trip" longer throughout the season since he didn't really fit in with the season anyways, but I don't think he should have been written off the show entirely, because after all, it wouldn't be the same without him.

Yes. I think that by the end of Season 3, they had really defined his character, and from then on he just seemed to repeat the same storylines over and over.

No, he should have left after The Replacement. In S4 he was good as it showed the whole adjustment to life after high school really well and provided a contrast to Buffy and Willow's college life. Besides which, before that episode he was still in the process of defining himself, so if he was going to go then it should have been when he figured it out in The Replacement.

To use Cordy's line, I think I'm in Bizzaroland!!!!

I frequently criticize Nick the actor, but Xander the character is one of the most honest, honorable, morale, and brave characters in all of TV. He is ALWAYS there for Buffy. He is never a sissy or Scaredy Cat. He deserved to be in every episode, and of course he with the exception of one.

He is almost as important as Buffy, and even more so than my beloved Willow.

Although I can understand the arguments for him leaving, I have to say that if he left we would've never had the Xander of season 8: who was awesome! He really came into his own in season 8, and I was glad for it.

Honestly, I'm like Goby... I don't see how that could have happened. Xander was part of the core four. He was destined to stay through the whole show, unless he died! 😛 Also no more witty lines from him? Would have made the show less interesting, imo. I'd have taken Oz, Tara or Anya out waaay before him.

Yes, very much so!
It did seem in season 4 that the writers were not clear what to do with Xander. Having lunch at college with the rest of the gang and working as a barman incidicated that to me.

However I still think it was right to keep him in the show. Like Tome mentioned he was still a key part of the core four and his humour still added to the show.

I'm glad he remained anyway.

Xander should have left after season 4

I'm not a fan of Xander. But during my re-watch I actually liked his character in seasons 1-4 because he had a purpose. In seasons 5-7 he was so annoying because the writers had nothing to do with his character, all Xander did was insult Spike and become Buffy's cheerleader for the last 3 seasons. I think they should have made him a recurring character or a villain or something

God, the show would have been one depressing, over the top, boring piece without Xander. Sorry, Xander stays, show is much better, end of comment.

Not really 😀 I do wish that Xander had more to do than just dealing with Real Life and giving the gang pep talks, but writing him out of the show? No, just no! Think of it this way, we wouldn't have had OMWF without Xander 😀 Unless you hate OMWF.

I think he does, but it's more subtle... But both of those things are hugely important. Xander's definitely crucial to the show. 🙂

I can't imagine BtVS without him! Like I couldn't imagine the show without Willow or Giles (I know, he left the gang for a while in seasons 6-7, but I felt as he always was there) and Buffy, what, as we know, doesn't make any sense.
They started as Willow, Buffy and Xander and they finished the same. And that's good.

It won't be BtVS without Buffy, Xander and Willow!
I think writers could give him more interesting stuff to do. When I watched the first seasons, I imagined that after school Xander would become a reporter or a writer, because he was always quoting popular movies and TV shows. If he's been working as a reporter, he could have more interesting storyarcs. Pity that Joss didn't go in that direction. His decision to send Xander into conctruction business was good from a metaphorical POV, but lacked potential for drama.

I really, really love this idea of yours. Reminds me of Ninja Turtles. I wish someone writes it as fanfic.

Agreed... It might have been cool to see him come back a little later in Season 4, but I would have been really upset if he never came back at all. Xander is the heart of the group, afterall... 🙂
