Shows/movies to watch as a family

I struggle finding stuff that the kids & I can watch together and all enjoy, so I was looking for some suggestions. Movies are a bit easier- I can find a lot of sci-fi and fantasy that we can all watch, and we all enjoy the superhero movies and some of the animated stuff (I can watch Wall-E again and again, but other stuff I don't sit down for if somebody offered to pay me- the kids missed out on the Smurfs because of that!). TV's a bit harder. I let them watch some BtVS and AtS with me, it really depends which episode & how much sex or violence or scary stuff is in it (there really are few episodes I censor, but quite a bit of season 6 for example). A lot of stuff marketed as "family" is so incredibly boring for me. I do like some of their Nick shows, but only in passing, not enough to sit down with them & get all excited about a new episode. Now, we have discovered Terra Nova, and we all like that. I have tried to get them into Doctor Who, but have not succeeded yet. I know that Merlin is family-friendly.

If you're a parent, what do you watch with your kids that interest both of you? And if you're a kid, what do you watch that both you & your parents get excited about?

BTW, my boys are 4, 7, and 10.
 
This is gonna sound weird, but try watching the old Twilight Zone episodes. My 4 year old loves them for some reason. I though because they arent in color that she would hate them, but she totally loves them.

OMG, are you crazy, they scare the crap out of me LOL! I'm not sure my kids could handle it. 🙂
 
I don't know if this will appeal to you or your kids, but; sports. The only thing I ever watched (and still watch) with my father was/is soccer and rugby. If we weren't watching it on TV my Dad was taking me to games. For me it was a great way to bond with my Dad and great source of debate and conversation. Not only that having a technical and critical understanding of the games is great for the mind, and even better encourages the actual playing of the sports.

Maybe your family is doing this already, but if not, I sincerely recommend it. 🙂
 
Your asking for a lot, family friendly TV is rare, everything has sex, violence, horror, etc. The only shows I can think of is Disney shows like Suite Life on Deck, Sonny with a Chance, stuff like that

New Girl with Zooey Deschanel isn't that bad, and it's really funny. Nikita is awesomeness, and it doesn't have much sex, and there's lots of great fights and action sequences.
 
When I was a kid, my family used to watch TV westerns together, in particular, "Have Gun, Will Travel," "Gunsmoke," and "Bonanza." Later, we watched the original "Star Trek" together (my mother thought Mr Spock was hot) for the first season, after which I went in the Navy. When I was very young, my mother would take me to matinees during the week when Father was gone, and we would watch all of the old B Westerns, with stars like Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and a dozen or more others. When there weren't Westerns playing, there was Tarzan, Jungle Jim, and Bomba, the Jungle Boy.

Spirited Away, Kiki's Delievery Service and almost anything by Hayao Miyazaki (I think he has just one PG-13 movie)
Movies with wolves set in Alaska (Call of the Wild, Alaska)

My dad showed me Star Trek as a kid, that's always a great choice. Are you an anime sort of person? There are plenty of movies like Spirited Away (anything, as Goby said, by Hayao Miyazaki) or The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and series like--well, there are a LOT of series. My dad also showed me MASH when I was 9 or 10, and Seinfeld much earlier than that.
 
Well a "family" show I love a lot is Avatar: The Last Airbender. I highly recommend it in general even if you don't have kids. I would say you could watch that with your kids... I mean it IS a Nickelodeon show.

I totally forgot!

Doctor Who! Perfect family entertainment, it's not violent (at least by North American standards), no sex and it's generally considered one of the greatest science fiction shows ever made😀
 
I think a lot of the classics are great for everyone!

Marx Brothers movies, (Night at the Opera in particular), Laurel and Hardy movies, "My Fair Lady," "The King and I," "Father of the Bride," (both versions), etc. For TV shows I'd try "Bewitched," "I Love Lucy," "Leave it to Beaver," "The Wonder Years," comedies like "Fawlty Towers."

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the above!

I am definitely going to introduce them to the original series. We have seen the reboot movie.

While I like that show, I can't get my kids very interested. What can I say, I try! 🙂

Scooby-doo is a life-long love of mine 😉 But perhaps the 10 year old feels it's too young stuff for him... 😀

Otherwise I'm pretty sold on the classics "I love Lucy", "The Munsters", "I dream of Jeannie".... the Munster especially should be entertaining to the youngens 🙂
 
I think it is obviously easier as they get older. My daughter is 5 and she has caught an episode or 2 of Dr Who and Buffy but while she was watching the show I was watching her and realised that they are just not suitable still, she is still too young even though she understands what I have taught her...hehe...good allways wins and its actors in makeup its just a story its not real.

I have to say this season of Merlin is alot darker than the last season so be aware of that too. My daughter was not too keen on the last 2 episodes so she will not be watching anymore of that 🙁

I get that its hard when they are young and I just accept that it may well be another year or 2 before we start to enjoy the same programs but at least she is showing potential. TV is not like it used to be the only thing we both kinda like is Takeshi's Castle LOL.
 
Have you shown them the Home Alone movies? I really love those. For TV shows, I watched The Land Before Time as a kid.

I also love the Scooby Doo movies. Also, I think our favorite is Hot Wheels World World Race. It really is a great movie. We started watching it when he was about 4, and we just watched it again last week.
 
Get a parent, a 10 year old and a 4 year old to enjoy the same stuff? Yeah, that definitely sounds like hard work.

As for movies, E.T. and possibly the old Herbie movies. TV shows? Oh wow. I really haven't kept track on shows since Nickelodeon and Disney channel got over here. Even if I'm a fan of Doctor Who I doubt I'd watch it with a 4 year old. To be honest I think I'm too affected of my upbringing when it comes to what I think kids should watch which rules out a lot of what others have mentioned. [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Gran[/ame] might fit the bill. Corny by todays standard of course.
