Shows That Don't Know When To Quit

I was thinking about this the other day as I watched the first few episodes of the ninth season of Scrubs (which is missing more than half of it's original cast now).

Some people really just don't know how to quit while they're ahead (which, as a sidenote, is probably why at some point I'm going to have a great post and disappear suddenly forever afterward.....fortunately for you guys I haven't had a good post ever so far). The Simpsons was probably my favorite show ever growing up but it's been a long time now since I had more than a passing interest in watching new episodes of that show. It also makes me feel slightly happy about some of my other favorite shows ending before they had a chance to completely wear out their welcome (we'd have all loved more Angel but at least it didn't come to that).

So what do you think about all this? Any shows you've liked that have completely lost you due to their inability to end when the time is right? Do you think this hurts the show's legacy overall? And, given the choice, would you rather see more seasons of a favorite show even if they were vastly inferior to what came before?

Simpsons has long over stayed its welcome, Family guy season eight was a bit stale maybe a sign that its running out of material. Smallville is on season 9 and I personally think that show sucks.

Family Guy is definitely outstaying it's welcome, and I think sooner than it would have if Seth MacFarlane didn't now have three cartoon shows of the same nature airing on the same night.

My boyfriend and I talk about this all the time! We both agree that The Office should have ended already -- not sure where exactly, but the plots aren't as good anymore. Maybe the writers have used all of their creative juices and are just throwing whatever they can come up with on TV. The arc where Pam, Ryan, and Michael separate from Dundler Mifflin and create their own business? Ugh, so bad.

We still watch it out of habit but it's just not the same.

Thing is, that when shows do end at their height, there are then the incensed fans who don't want it cancelled.

I love Smallville and this season is much better than last. I was ready for it to end after that crap season 8, but I'm happy they brought it back.

If you never watched the show it's not a question of outliving itself.

One Tree Hill is my dirty little crap show secret. It's on its 7th season and even though it is marginally better than the last season it really should have just called it quits a couple of seasons ago. We all could have been saved the Nanny Carrie carpfest of doom.

Grey's Anatomy springs to mind. Even though I love having it to look forward too it jumped the shark 3 seasons ago and hasn't really had an outstanding arc since.

I disagree completely. I think One Tree Hill is only getting better as it goes on. I think the Nanny Carrie storyline was really well done. The scene where she's chasing Jamie through the field had me on the edge of my seat. I like storylines like that. The same goes for the thing with Brooke and Sam, when Brooke almost shoots that guy.

But, One Tree Hill is one of my favorite shows, so I'm being totally biased. Just like I never wanted BtVS to end haha

Back to the point: I don't watch much in the way of variety, I stick to only a few TV shows. Those being ones I REALLY enjoy.

Oh, I don't know about GA. In my opinion, season 6 already is a lot better than 4 & 5. I like the new format they're doing now with focussing on one character per episode than just be the Meredith and McDreamy show. But I've fallen deeply in love with the Arizona character so ... I'm just extremely happy every time she's on screen. But to each their own of course 😉

For me, it definitely is Scrubs and Smallville which both used to be guilty pleasures of mine but I lost complete interest in them about... four seasons ago? I also thought Heroes was heading that way since that astrocious season 3 but I like 4 so far.

I think Xena went on about two seasons too long, too.

Naw, you're right. Even a year or two ago, I'd have disagreed but they just aren't coming up with good stuff anymore. They have this formula where they take one joke and stretch it way too much until you can't take it anymore lately.

Probably a show none of you know (except the tiny handful of Germans on here), but the prime example for me is "Hinter Gittern - der Frauenknast" ("Behind Bars - Women in Jail"). It started out as one of the best written character drama shows made in Germany back in the late 90s, but got absolutely atrocious and unwatchable near the end (leading to a well-deserved time slot change from 9 PM to 1 AM for its horrid last season).

I totally agree about Grey's Anatomy... I stopped watching when they made Izzie and George get together. After that I had had enough. And Degrassi: The Next Generation is SO done now that they've gotten rid of all the original people. I love "Smallville", and my hubby is still totally addicted, but I am, like, 3 seasons behind now. We didn't have the channel for a long time, so now I have to watch the DVDs to catch up.

One Tree Hill. Don't get me wrong, I love the show. I can't without it. But after season 4 it all went down hills. Season one was nice, pretty good begining. Season 2, awesome. Season 3, the best (Brucas <3), season 4 - I can handle it, but season 5. OMG, that ruined the show, as well as season 6. Now it's on season 7, and it's good, unlike seasons 5 and 6. Something is finally happening, that all drama we all know and love is back.

I think everyone knows my feelings on Skins by now. Outstanding first season, pretty good second season, what the hell are you doing?!? third season. If it'd finished at the end of 1, I'd have been wanting more, but really impressed and happy with it.

I think a lot of long-running shows go through a little dip when they get to around season 5. Buffy was one of the exceptions, actually. The quality never really dipped till seven. If they can soldier through, however, they tend to pick up again, especially if they're running towards an ultimate conclusion.

One show that fell off towards the end was The West Wing, but it was still a really great program. It was a case of just being a little disappointed in it not living up to the previous seasons rather than wishing it would just end already.

Oh, and I agree about this series of Family Guy, it's pretty much sucked. Although I did like s7, so maybe it's just a blip or something.

end?? One of the most overrated shows!

Idol-our version anyway. It truly sucks and the ratings this year has been atrocious.. What do my fellow Aussies think?
